Interesting! I thought it was universal - well at least for me Portuguese from Portugal is very hard to understand (especially the pronunciation). I learned Brazilian Portuguese ok, so I’m not really good at it, just basic conversation. If I was a native speaker or really fluent it would maybe be easier to understand Portuguese from Portugal as well.
Arguably the difference between Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese from Portugal is much bigger than between American and British English
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:19AM (#50315455)
Software quality was never as big of an issue as it’s made out to be.

Even before AI most software that ran “mission-critical” systems was kind of bad. I mean huge enterprises got routinely hacked bc of some owasp top 10 shit. And this happened many many times across all industries.

It’s not like before AI everyone was writing well-tested and reviewed secure super brain code

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:08PM (#50262296)
Not my experience tbh.

Those that love writing code are still doing it just way more intense than ever (like the person in the article)

Those that use code as a means to an end, solve that issue and then take the rest of the day off

Might just be me though

Re:The EPA Is Quietly Killing Its Web Archive on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:07PM (#50250148)
A “proper” mirror alongside archive.org would be good too
Re:The EPA Is Quietly Killing Its Web Archive on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:06PM (#50250135)
The adverb “quietly” has become such an AI smell to me, even if it’s probably not one in this instance.
I hope I will never be in that situation to make that decision; but seeing the fate of the different whistleblowers (in the USA) it seems you need to be almost suicidal to blow the whistle.

Like your life will basically be ruined for a long time, maybe forever.

I get the sentiment but basically you say that people need to join corrupt fucked up organisations to make them better. Like if you don’t join and improve things, some kind of psychopath will join in your stead and make things worse.

I don’t think that’s a helpful way to think about it.

You’re not required to improve things anywhere and you can leave a toxic (work)relationship if that’s what you need.

The problem is not that power corrupts; it’s more that power attracts corruptible people

Yea Meta is the only possible company you can work at…
>the institutional left is basically neoliberals

I think that’s very USA centric - i feel it’s different in Europe or South America

The perfidy of Putin (and many other authoritarian regimes) is that they can clothe their anti-democratic and anti-human policies in the language of their opponents.

So Putin can justify anything with words - what they say doesnt really matter or reflect reality. The actions and outcomes matter.

It seems similarly unfathomable to other commenters that US big tech is ideologically aligned with the rightwing parties in EU and SA. Further that the current US administration is openly rooting for leaders to get elected that serve its interests and not the electorate’s interests (which makes sense) and that US big tech is entirely controlled and thrall to the US administration. Truly mindboggling
Well let’s make the next fine 250B, they clearly don’t care enough yet
Maybe a lot of people worked at stackoverflow idk; but I have been organising electronic “underground” music nights for 15+ years and basically stopped now because there just wasn’t a big enough audience anymore.

Anyway what I’m trying to say is that I think COVID and its aftermath is a much bigger factor here than AI, especially when it comes to “live / performing” art

Forgive my ignorance but which machines depend almost entirely on quantum principles?
Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:41PM (#50199365)
With the current admin the deforestation rates in Brazil are now the lowest they have been for decades. Unfortunately that will be over by next week probably :/
Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:39PM (#50199350)
Which is fair i think. The fines for them should be 1000x times higher or 50% of yearly revenue or something and they won’t cheat so much anymore.
Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:38PM (#50199343)
Yea I’m obviously not familiar with the details but whoever is in charge of enforcing the laws should do it.

If the law is not sufficiently protecting Finnish interests here it should be changed.

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:35PM (#50199315)
Should be an easy case then!

If it’s illegal fine them billions for all i care

Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:40PM (#50198619)
It’s not utterly different.

Here is a list of banned books in the USA:

Here is also a huge Wikipedia article:

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:37PM (#50198565)
I agree 100%. Autocracies are even worse like I said in my other comment.

But tur shortsightedness of democracies also seems to lead to disaster long term.

I guess on a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to 0, there is no real way to prevent it

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:34PM (#50198529)
IMO it’s hypocritical.

I rarely see people complaining about the insane amount of water that is used in meat production (trillions of liters worldwide) but almost constant discussions about water consumption of datacenters (millions of litres worldwide).

It’s complaining about the splinter in your eye but being oblivious to the giant wooden beam lodged in your brain.

It’s of course that people like meat on their plates but dislike AI for ideological reasons

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:29PM (#50198462)
Typically one has to wait for courts to decide whether something is illegal or not.

If it was illegal them I’m sure the state prosecutors will take care of it.

I dislike Google as much as the next guy but this seems like a minor issue in a list of huge problems

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:35AM (#50182777)
I know that they tried to evict the people in the forest in 2018 and a bunch of people got arrested because they resisted the eviction. Later on they walked it back and let them stay but still some people got arrested not because of violence but because they occupied the forest.
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:30AM (#50182691)
They can have long term plans but they suffer from the consequences of authoritarian government.

Not the same problems as democracy but I would argue that authoritarianism is even worse.

You mean people that have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) or people that exhibit narcissistic traits?

You previously wrote “personality doesn't change, it's a stable pattern” implying personalities not limited to narcissists.

If we are talking about people with severe or clinically elevated narcissism - sure it’s much harder to change since it’s basically a mental illness; but there are also many cases where people suffering from NPD improved their condition. Which means they can change.

It might not be worth to you personally to be the facilitator of that change and that is fair, no one said that.

But saying that peoples personalities cant change as a blanket statement is just objectively wrong

I think you misunderstood something.

The generally accepted view is that personality is “relatively stable” in adulthood; not that it is completely static.

see for example https://experts.illinois.edu/en/publications/personality-sta...

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:25AM (#50179735)
Again not sure what you’re referring to.

The ones that made Hambach happen were the people that camped there in the woods literally for years in tree houses and they (some of them) also got arrested for it.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:18AM (#50179660)
What do you mean? A lot of people got arrested in the course of the Hambach protests
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:10AM (#50179565)
I think partly it’s also that democracies aren’t great at longer term planning.

Like in my country there is a big election every 4 years and you have state elections in between. So any government needs to constantly appease the people to stay in power and do anything. It’s basically impossible for them to make and more importantly realise any plans that go beyond that 4/5 year timeframe.

And to solve something like climate change we would need to think in decades or centuries.
