Re:Value of life on Monday January 08, 2024 @09:11AM (#38912128)
This is more of a negotiation tactic against pharmaceutical companies that are marketing new wonder drugs that give terminal cancer patients 1% longer life expectancy for 10x more cost.

The drugs company can sell their new wonder drug to the UK for 80k a year, or not at all. That's why these drugs are so much cheaper in the UK than in countries such as the US.

No. Non folding bikes are not allowed on most tube services in central london. The lines that do allow it don't allow it during rush hour.

This is an awesome view into the implementation details of python. Can anyone recommend other resources that go into the lower level python implementation?

Not at all, I've never seen a flight cheaper direct with the airline than going through an agent.

Re:Wordle Is a Love Story on Thursday January 06, 2022 @03:23PM (#29829504)
It depends on your word list, are you using the same word list as wordle?
Re:Wordle Is a Love Story on Thursday January 06, 2022 @03:18PM (#29829422)
With the first word you aren't necessarily trying to get the most number of matches.

You are trying to use the word that once you get the match result back, it discards the most number of words.

These two are not the same thing.

Re:Wordle Is a Love Story on Thursday January 06, 2022 @03:05PM (#29829222)
The skill is in not leaving yourself with two words that would both fit. If earlier you had tried a word with both an 'm' and a 'g' such as 'image' you would not have been left in a position where you would have to have a lucky guess
Re:Wordle Is a Love Story on Thursday January 06, 2022 @03:01PM (#29829143)
The optimal starting word is ARISE, as it partitions the possible words most evenly across the different green/yellow/grey colour combinations

That $3,000,000 would have payed each of the 250 employees $12,000. Do you think they would have stayed for $12,000 a year?
Coming from a country where that's not how it works it sounds quite strange. Does it apply to houses? Gold? Antiques?
why would you depreciate the assets to $0 when there's very good evidence that the assets do in fact have positive value?
It's not like 10% of sales goes to the song writer, so the artist changing a word means that the artist gets and additional 1% and the song writer only 9%. Surely at the point of producing a contract everyone negotiates the split and signs the contract if they are happy with the deal.
> putting their names as writers for songs of poor black artists, so they (the producers) can get royalties

Why do you need to be a writer to get royalties. Would the producers not be able to ask for a royalty regardless?

Are you a subsistance farmer? If not then your job exists because of automation. Every single product that exists exists because we have automated away something is the past. Every book, tv show, pop song has been produced by people who in previous generations would have had to spend their days hunting and gathering. Automation frees up people to innovate. What's sad is that we still have people who spend their whole lives doing jobs that could easily be done by robots.
This article was not involved, it was not linked to from reddit. I'm not sure how it's relevant to the situation
I'm not sure if you are trolling, but the article wasn't "dead naming a trans woman". It was an article in a mainstream uk magazine about a uk political party where her preferred name was mentioned
People weren't angry with her until she began banning users posting articles in the mainstream press that happen to mention her name.
Do you need specific DisplayLink compatible hardware, or will any usbc to Displayport adapter work?
What people forget with self driving cars is that they don't have to always go at the speed limit.

I love taking trains rather than driving, I can put all my attention on netflix or reading a book. Sometimes the train goes at 100mph sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it stops for 5 minutes, sometimes it just continues slowly at 10mph. At first you find it annoying when a train appears to stop for no reason for a few minutes before continuing, but after it happening a few times, you get used to it, stop noticing and stop caring.

Self driving cars can do the same. It's ok for a car to slow down to 5mph when there are hazards, it's ok for a car to go fast when there aren't. The car doesn't need to know that "ball" means "kid" if, every time it sees a ball or a plastic bag or a puddle, it slows down to 5mph and continues at that speed until it's sure there is no more hazard.

Humans are very bad a driving. They treat the speed limit as a target rather than a ceiling. I live on a road with 2 schools, the speed limit is 30mph and yet many people drive much closer to 40mph past children walking to school. I'd be willing to bet big money that it's much more likely that that impatient driver driving at 40mph is going to hit a child than a self driving car that changes its speed according to the current situation.

Re:How to Win at the Stock Market by Being Lazy on Thursday February 04, 2021 @12:23PM (#26027516)
There is something inherently true. The stock market goes up because the world becomes more efficient. What the world was able to do last year, it's able to do again and then some because we are better at doing it.

why would it be interpreted as a blank line? If you remove everything after the #, that includes the new line characters at the end of the line. Leaving:

If see a transaction you don't recognise. By looking at it on a map it may remind you of that small shop you bought something from. Or it might be in a town you've never been to.

Which is why it says: ... you would have the traditional unit for the kilometer as defined in 1791 by the French Academy of Sciences.
