Have you ever seen any really old overweight people? I only ever see skinny old people
This whole post looks like PR damage control and not an employee “breaking silence”. Also there’s not a thing about the CEO calling his employees losers to try to make them output more code by using AI more. Also looks like it was heavily bot-upvoted, both the thread and the initial positive comments. The whole thing makes me trust proton even less
yeah I was really surprised to see this post which has 240 points and over 200 comments within 3 hours got pushed to the third page of hn
I think Garmin Instinct is the ultimate "tactical" watch: rugged, solar-powered, e-ink screen providing 4 weeks of battery, smartphone connectivity, notifications, lets you track your pulse, sleep, movement. has compass, GPS, alarm, timer, and even maps
What’s wrong with “piss”?
Clearly the vibe du jour seems to be to just throw AI at any and all problems. And sometimes there are better, simpler and more straightforward solutions
Maybe because Protosses have been doing bad lately and need some help improving :) (won only 3 out of 22 ASL championships in the past 10 years)
On a more serious note: all three races play quite differently so it makes sense to focus on just one. And protoss is mechanically the easiest and most straightforward race: fewer but stronger units, a single worker can be used to build multiple buildings at once, versatile basic static defence
I blame digital entertainment. It really is so much easier and less risky to just stare at a screen instead of going out and interacting with people. Cheaper too. And quicker. And a near-100% success rate guaranteed. Like it is actually possible to opt out of most activities and instead burn through your life in front of the screens. It actually requires actual effort and resources in order not to - this is increasingly becoming the default. And it is not the Japanese which are at risk. Each one of us is at risk and the problem will only get worse as the digital entertainment improves while many aspects of the "real-life" get wiped out or locked behind an unattainable paywall due to climate destruction, high fuel prices, inflation, lack of people in service roles, or the lack of people to interact with (because they too are at home speedrunning their lives with their entertainment of choice).
Really nice. GTA 1 & 2 were really amazing. I had a lot of good times with them.
cool, but they should stick to "handwriting" and drop the paper, because this is clearly not paper
It's crazy OpenAI can keep on doing harmful criminal activity in broad daylight and face no legal or financial repercussions
OpenAI must be held accountable
Oh it's definitely a threat, and the damage is not potential but factual already. Consider 120+ children dead in a single airstrike on a school in Iran, or the current gasoline prices worldwide as a result of the unprovoked war they started. People killed, world economy damage, plus the damage to international alliances, institutions, and the rule of law. Just quick 3 examples of the actual damage, and that's only this year!
Strong and unpredictable early game, solid middle game, strongest late game. It also has some of the best units in the game: zerglings, mutalisks, defilers. Especially defilers, they are arguably the strongest spellcasters in the game
It is in fact APM limited, and its creator claims it was trained without the map hack so it should do just as well without it. I think the bot is VERY impressive and has already managed to beat several top Korean pros which is really godlike
I think Obsidian is an interesting case. It is highly customisable and it allows for Claude code and other agents to run inside it, with access to both the app data and the code. So all within Obsidian, you can tell Claude to change anything about Obsidian, and he will do it and you will see the changes almost instantly. So basically everyone starts when the default obsidian build but each user ends up having a different set of UI, workflows and extensions to fit their needs
Came here to say exactly this. Mindscape is great, with lots of interesting guests and topics. And new episodes come fairly frequently, 1-2 a month i think
Where are those 99$ coming from? Who is actually paying this money? Because it seems like so far everybody is losing money with no reversal of this trend in sight
> But is it really much better in reality? Aren't we getting more and more distanced either way?
Yes, and yes. We are getting more distanced, but clearly the online/digital interactions are amplifying this in an extreme way. Like the idea itself that we are both talking to a bundle of plastics, metals and electronics and everything we say is mediated by this THING between us, that's as distancing as it gets. But it still is possible to just talk to people "out there" in the real world, but since it's less common and happens less often than it used to, I think we kinda lose this as a skill because we are out of practice, and its not just us but also "them". So I think the real-life interactions nowadays need some more engineering to set up the conditions for them, but at the same time people are desperate for them and craving them
Wow that is a one scary intense trailer. Hard to believe we are not witnessing some kind of serious psychopathology right there
Same. I am also trying to unfuck my brain using pen and paper each day. Got a nice Lamy fountain pen and a notebook I like and I try to write as much as I can each day. Even if most of it is trivial, I still think it’s beneficial because it stops me from consuming content on the internet and it turns me from a consumer into a creator. I think it also improves my focus and does some mental health work too. But it is an uphill battle. After hours of overstimulation, just being by myself feels unbearable, like I can’t stand to be alone in my head without any noises to distract or amuse me.
One of IJ’s most important topics is the critique of the empty destructive postmodern cynicism that you are referring to. Wallace was in fact trying his best to do more than just reflect. One of IJ’s main and most likeable characters, Mario, is basically a walking sentiment of this. Infinite jest is surprisingly preachy in this regard; “this is water” and some of his other essays are even more so in this regard. that’s why literary critics argue that Infinite Jest doesn’t belong to the postmodern, but rather to the post-postmodern, sometimes also called the metamodern, or the new sincerity. Like a hybrid of modern and postmodern that oscillates between the hip and the banal, between cynicism and hope, fiction and truth.
Here is Wallace on this subject:
“Irony and cynicism were just what the U.S. hypocrisy of the fifties and sixties called for. That’s what made the early postmodernists great artists. The great thing about irony is that it splits things apart, gets up above them so we can see the flaws and hypocrisies and duplicates. The virtuous always triumph? Ward Cleaver is the prototypical fifties father? "Sure." Sarcasm, parody, absurdism and irony are great ways to strip off stuff’s mask and show the unpleasant reality behind it. The problem is that once the rules of art are debunked, and once the unpleasant realities the irony diagnoses are revealed and diagnosed, "then" what do we do? Irony’s useful for debunking illusions, but most of the illusion-debunking in the U.S. has now been done and redone. Once everybody knows that equality of opportunity is bunk and Mike Brady’s bunk and Just Say No is bunk, now what do we do? All we seem to want to do is keep ridiculing the stuff. Postmodern irony and cynicism’s become an end in itself, a measure of hip sophistication and literary savvy. Few artists dare to try to talk about ways of working toward redeeming what’s wrong, because they’ll look sentimental and naive to all the weary ironists. Irony’s gone from liberating to enslaving. There’s some great essay somewhere that has a line about irony being the song of the prisoner who’s come to love his cage.”
There is an algorithm to the HM feed and there are definitely recommendations. We are both posting in this thread because it has made it to the main page because people upvoted it. That’s the algorithm/recommendation system.
Because OpenAI bribed the current US government and/or the current government has stakes in OpenAI
There are free open source tools that convert osm data into 3D models, for example
https://osm2world.org/. Also you could use freely available national 3d point cloud data, at least for some areas. both are $0 options. btw I am not saying $33 dollars here is expensive; just giving you some comparisons
Please do post the tutorial. Also, your RTS looks great, I will definitely check it out!
That’s fair. I just fear the justice system or whatever it should be to decide what the “truth” is might not be up to the task or not that interested in truth anymore. Like for example there’s this one person that everybody in the world knows who bragged about doing despicable things and there’s dozens of women who for years have been accusing him of doing similarly despicable or worse things to them, but it doesn’t matter because he’s innocent until proven guilty… So at some point I just allow myself to draw my own conclusions
> let reality teach me what it required
This resonates with me. I think it takes balls to leave the comfort zone and test our assumptions against the real world, to get actual feedback, good or bad. I think now it’s easier than ever to just stay in our caves surrounded by nothing else but our customised feeds that reinforce our beliefs and the sycophantic AI agents that yes-and all our ideas.
One example to illustrate: when talking about dying, Americans would kick the bucket, Poles would kick the calendar, French would break the pipe, Germans would drop the spoon, and the Spanish would pull the leather. But they all would be referring to the US's trust among its allies.
