Re:UK to force social media to remove abusive pics in 48 hours on Thursday February 19, 2026 @08:33AM (#47073550)
I agree that laws such as this to be defined very carefully, but I think "images" is the appropriate term to use, rather than "photos". LLMs make it near trivially easy to render a photo in countless styles, after all, such as paintings, or sketches.
Re: on Wednesday July 03, 2024 @08:33PM (#40871351)
I've just asked the most important question that has been asked. Obviously.
Re: on Wednesday July 03, 2024 @08:32PM (#40871344)
The Steyn Paradox asks "What is the Question?"

My name is Mark Steyn, and that is the Steyn Paradox.

Re:Author Clock: a novel way to tell time on Wednesday June 12, 2024 @02:42PM (#40661446)
Is there some sort of internet law which says that any device providing a service which could be an app will eventually be replaced by an app?
Re:Support for Third U.S. Political Party Up to 63% on Thursday October 12, 2023 @10:24AM (#37857604)
In the wake of brexit, I'm not sure the argument that both parties differ only on minor issues holds up.

The view from Inverness Park is also pretty great.

Well, yes.
Re:Apple Rankings on Thursday November 17, 2022 @12:17PM (#33642187)
I wonder how many fewer clicks the article would have received had the title been “Ranking apples”

My hope is that Stage Manager is configurable in a manner similar to the dock, such that it can be hidden off screen until the cursor hits the edge of the screen.
I wouldn't overlook the impact of battery life.

I've never squeezed more than 4 or 5 hours out of my two year old Macbook Pro. A 20 hour battery life in addition to the speed gains make upgrading a tempting prospect.

Re:Researchers find stem cells for hair regeneration on Wednesday February 24, 2021 @11:34AM (#26251857)
Shaving my head was the best decision I ever made regarding my hair. I never knew what to do with it before that.

Vastly happier now.

What sort of incidence of eating disorders did you witness in the group either group?
I'm been an avid comics fan all my life. I remember "millionaire Bruce Wayne" giving way to "billionaire Bruce Wayne", and idly wondering how long before we'd see the first reference to "trillionaire Bruce Wayne".

It seemed impossibly distant once. Not now.

Re:Apple building search engine to take on Google, report claims on Wednesday October 28, 2020 @09:11AM (#24918303)
That was pre-tax income. Apple's profit for 2019 was $55 billion.

Score is 6/10 for repairability.
Re:Ask HN: How are you holding up? on Tuesday June 23, 2020 @08:59AM (#23613268)
Years ago, I visited the zoo in Central Park in NYC and watched a polar bear, as it swam around and around in a pool. It swam in a triangle, touching the three same points on the wall of the enclosure as it made each circuit.

Last month I walked around Greenwich Park in London 125 times, each time following exactly the same route. I thought about that polar bear a lot as I walked.

Re:A first look at Unreal Engine 5 on Wednesday May 13, 2020 @01:01PM (#23169000)
Mark Cerny's tech talk emphasised that performance is determistic:

'So how does boost work in this case? Put simply, the PlayStation 5 is given a set power budget tied to the thermal limits of the cooling assembly. "It's a completely different paradigm," says Cerny. "Rather than running at constant frequency and letting the power vary based on the workload, we run at essentially constant power and let the frequency vary based on the workload."'

If you want to enjoy gaming on a high-end GPU, you almost certainly care about latency.
Re:Apple Defends Decision to Remove Parental Control Apps on Monday April 29, 2019 @11:08AM (#19779019)
But if people don't use the service they'll cancel it.

And viewing figures are going to have a big impact on future Apple tv content.

Re:Apple Defends Decision to Remove Parental Control Apps on Monday April 29, 2019 @10:41AM (#19778756)
That's becoming less true with Apple's increasing revenue from services.

Throwing money at a problem doesn’t guarantee a positive outcome.
Re:Do you guys miss real books? (2014) on Monday March 04, 2019 @09:13AM (#19301346)
I have a large screen phone and decent eyesight, so I'm perfectly happy to read books using the Kindle app.

Books are lovely physical objects, but the convenience of carrying a library with me at all times far outweighs any sentimentality I have.

Re:Running FreeBSD on OS X using xhyve, a port of bhyve on Wednesday December 12, 2018 @06:36AM (#18663023)
It's been macOS for the last couple of years.

(but yes, I know it's still using webkit behind the scenes)

Yahoo failed, in part, because its competitors were better.

Being better than Facebook doesn't mean just replicating its technology, it means having a better social graph.

That's a hard problem to solve.

Re:Beyond Sexual Orientation (2016) on Friday August 17, 2018 @10:41AM (#17783129)
I experimented and eventually realised I'm asexual.

I'm not depressed, or ill. All my parts function. It's just that I'm not sexually attracted to anyone.

I'm still perfectly capable of having, and enjoying, sex, but it's been a long time now. Even before I realised I was asexual, I was still aware of an asymmetry in what was going on, that I wasn't experiencing things in quite the same was as my partner.

I still like the idea of love and partnership, but I've let this get in the way of my finding it.

In the future we may see likenesses of actors perform again after they're dead.

That's such an important distinction. It's true that an actor's appearance is one of their most memorable traits, but its not the sum of their accomplishments. Acting is a skill.

I'm not and never have been an actor, but I was impressed with Wil Wheaton, when he detailed on his blog how he prepared for auditions, the choices he would make about how to approach a particular scene. That level of thought, and experience will be lost forever when an actor dies.

With technology, we may see the likeness of a particular actor again, but we'll never again see their particular like.

Re:Can you get 32 level grayscale out of an E-ink display? on Saturday January 13, 2018 @07:05PM (#16142116)
All the years e-ink displays have been available in consumer products and we're still only talking about 5 bit greyscale?

I gave up my Kindle as soon as 5 inch displays were available. I thought the market would have made more progress by now.
