Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:09AM (#50348328)
There was talk about a few things I can only see driving the drops: 1. Datacenter projects run by mining companies and now their loans may be frozen so construction may not finish 2. Prices of everything are putting crunches on Enterprise - I've seen it in a few places I talk to - they aren't buying laptops and servers in 2027 if they dont have to 3. Consumers aren't buying hardware because they cant afford the hardware and may not have free cash anyway
Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:06AM (#50348307)
The weird bit is they picked up the ball for graphics again and ran with it for a while, but fell down and broke their leg and sold the team to nvidia now. Right when their product line is probably placed the best - medium end good, priced GPUs for gaming, they are done with that segment.
Re:Can't fish Ethernet? Use "invisible" fiber instead on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:48PM (#50345930)
I have old cat5e and it can do 10Gbps - Wondering what you're hoping to see here? If the endpoints negotiate 100Mbps then thats the top speed of the link - could be the endpoints (worth trying others) but chances are its the ends that are bad, not the middle unless you're pounding nails in where the cables go.
Re:Can't fish Ethernet? Use "invisible" fiber instead on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:45PM (#50345883)
I came here to say that - I wonder if one of the ends just went bad and needed re-crimping.
Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:30PM (#50344062)
I was busy using Astra and SOL to build a neural network to play Quake II and do real-time learning of levels and mods so I can play Red Rover or Freeze tage with it without training on it previously. So far its insane what I can conjure up in an evening while I'm waiting for dinner to finish. (If anyone asks, yes I'll write up the huge plan document, source etc. for this when its to a spot I'm happy with)
Re:My Favourite Laptop on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:28PM (#50344031)
The T480 is on par with this thing - you have two batteries, one is external and you can upgrade it to a beefcake pack if you desire, it has the 8000 series intel CPU which is fast enough. It has awesome expansion etc. I prefer the AMD T14's these days, but they lack a lot of the features I liked that this person calls out. One bigger internal battery, it's easy to replace if you (when you?) need to, and has USB4 on the later models.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:54PM (#50267030)
Doesn't this depend on the model and quant as well vs. the hardware and its capability? Plus memory bandwidth, amount, and layout.

My Strix Halo now can run some models through the NPU and its roughly as fast as its GPU+CPU (on some of the models - some its slower)

Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:47PM (#50266958)
Honestly MiniMax H3 looks better than this at most of the things I've been able to generate locally. These look super AAA game like - movement is uncanny and feels like it was trained on GTA3 or something like that - is this just me?
Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:35PM (#50266189)
Dont be silly, it will be on the companies hardware. We're pushed to a rent to "use" model in so many things now.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:52AM (#50260301)
Somewhere in Windows 11 23H2 (maybe newer - I haven't looked) is the Windows 3 program manager application.
They already had 32bit Win32 Windows on Windows (WoW) subsystems on all machines, even ARM64 to a point - the only thing I've seen that it didnt run out of the box was OpenGL which they have a (??!) Store app for Maya3d or something that does OpenGL to DirectX translation - and that seemed to work OK. The biggest issues I had with Windows on ARM64 was the lack of cooling.

Back on track - the 16 bit DOS and Windows stack is a lot different than Win32 - totally different windowing, drawing to the screen, and memory management is involved - it was probably pulled for security reasons and the most common one at Microsoft - "the guy who maintained this left or retired"

Re:OLED iPad Mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:11AM (#50244040)
Ok, how is this a disappointment - what does it not have that the pro does that you're seeking? To me, this just looks like a large phone without cellular. Not sure I'd want this, as I already have a large phone - good enough.
Oh the Hitchhikers guide is also a good movie. 42
Re:Advanced Shader Delivery Is Available Now Across Hardware on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:40PM (#50189167)
Only available on the XBOX App for Windows. Nah. I even have gamepass ultimate and I'm not interested - more so now that they pulled CoD from it even. I just do not like the interface, updates to games, and its file management.
Windows NT (NT - Windows 11) keeps applications in their own private memory space by design. Windows 1,2,3,95,98,Me didn't do this which is why it was more prone to blue screens.
Someone was watching NT to Now on Youtube I see, and playing with the Application SHIM system. There are a lot of quirky things from NT still in Windows 11. I think that Clock.exe was finally removed a year or two ago from 1994.
Re:Show HN: Indigene – native plants for where you stand on Saturday October 17, 2026 @02:59AM (#50128645)
It didn't where I live so this site doesn't do much for me. I'd love it though, I'm a huge fan of the idea.
Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:39AM (#50118919)
Didnt someone have software rendering for Crysis on a third-generation Threadripper?
Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:35AM (#50118878)
In the first waves of multimedia PCs - the CPU was tasked with doing sound, networking, hard drive control, etc. - pretty much all of the cost savings came from having minimal hardware for the auxiliary components and doing it all in drivers.

A common "Trick" was to buy cards that had essentially their own processors to handle this stuff - SoundBlasters, 3Com nics, IDE drive controllers that had their own processor (hell, even up to their own OS) since that freed the CPU up for doing actual work - gaming. Even an external or other

CPUs were a bottle neck but most people didnt tax the single core machines doing most daily work (office work, browsing the web) so it was fine, but once you load up a game that needs sound, 3d, networking, disk access all at once it would start stealing clock cycles trying to do all of that in one place.

Probably due to their panic for the 2023 secure boot cert stuff and or security issues being patched in uefi/recovery. It probably just bulldozes over anything there to lay down a clean boot partition.
Re:Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @07:49AM (#50070175)
On the surface this seems like good news. Other browsers have central management planes tied to users that an enterprise can control plugins and policy with. While Firefox hasn't had this ever.

It may be a little too late as I'm seeing the shift away from Edge or Chrome even in some enterprises to secure browsers.

Re:Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:36AM (#50056279)
I noticed that. I'm kinda surprised they cant get it working these days on Apple Silicon. I was excited to try it on my Neo but they noted OpenGL and a dependency is the hangup. Somewhat surprised this isnt on Vulkan or something (I think there is a Vulkan - Metal translation layer available)

After digging I found this - https://github.com/benbreen/RecoilEngine-AppleSilicon Looks like someone has ported and successfully gotten some or all of it working.

Re:IRCv3 on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:53AM (#50055032)
Maybe if I get bored at the end of the month and have some Claude credits left I'll clean room it to .net 10 or something.
Isn't MW2 rooted in id tech engines? Last I checked there was raw assembly inside the code base. I would have started with quake 2/3 whatever source code and tried to match that up with Claude first - some of it has to have survived (though I doubt much)
Re:Theranos.World on Thursday October 08, 2026 @06:34PM (#50013383)
I cant believe they've done this. They didnt even use iframes.

Looks like the gibson in the movie Hackers.
Re:$2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @03:17PM (#49997507)
I have a cheaper Surface Laptop 4 that I wanted to love, even for Windows, but it just has such poor support for Windows even though its a first party device that I had to kind of move on to something else. Shame, since it could have been a good laptop at the time having a custom AMD chipset it could even pull decent frames in gaming and whatever, but it just has awful driver support for the GPU / display dimming.

The battery life is also unremarkable, and having other surfaces people have dumped on me that are older and newer (but I did not buy) I don't think I like the designs of them all around.

Re:Vibecoding Photoshop: Time and pressure on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @08:40PM (#49986343)
No screenshots to see what it looks like that I was able to find?
Re:Vibecoding Photoshop: Time and pressure on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @08:23PM (#49986179)
For me, I dont like photoshop and only have it to get lightroom so I can do basic editing on photos. I am in photoshop maybe 6 hours a year and only to do some minor edits or things I should probably do in another app like InDesign or whatever it is for layouts (I truly have no idea, but I'm not giving adobe more money).

For me, I just want to easily organize some folders, cull stuff, throw the culls into a marked directory, and process them to JPEG with some lighting adjustments since I shoot raw. Lightroom honestly is painful to use. I don't think gimp fills my needs since its more like photoshop. I'm happy to look at something else though!

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @01:07PM (#49981265)
I have similar hardware - what specific version of the 3.8 Next model are you running and how many tokens/s are you seeing? 3.6 35B A3B gets about 68t/s for me so I've been sticking with that model for the mean time.
