Conway's Game of Life
Sometimes you need to see all the available tools. Replace the "talent" with a little "technique".

Cannot draw 3D with perspective? Use isometric-ish projection with graded axes.

Cannot do music? Learn music theory, some scales and so on.Maybe an easier instrument.

Of course it will not replace a person with natural talents, but it can help to overcome those beliefs.

Re:The New American Micro-SaaS Dream on Monday July 04, 2022 @08:48PM (#31983150)
Whats the answer to services?

More services! /s

It is the same as Nicanor Parra's:

There are two pieces of bread. You eat two. I eat none. Average consumption: one bread per person

Basically all of the UNIX world.
Re:New proof shows when structure must emerge in graphs on Saturday June 25, 2022 @09:59AM (#31875353)
"Limit cycles" come to mind. How you translate "cycle detection" from and to a continuous space?
Re:How to avoid being a secretary for engineers (2018) on Saturday June 25, 2022 @12:10AM (#31872535)
This is like when kids start to ask "stupid" questions, when in reality those are sometimes useful data coming from another paradigm.
Re:Sex is going out of fashion? on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @11:26AM (#31825027)
An addiction can be sometimes a masked emotional need/problem.

-I want porn, because I carve intimacy

-I want to smoke, so I can relax or be seen as Y.

-I drink a lot of coffee because I dont have time for Quality Sleep.

Sometimes complicated things are just bad abstractions: you dont have a clearer framework yet.
Re:Slope: A hackable hobby programming language on Friday June 17, 2022 @11:21PM (#31787016)
>It is built for the joy of building something. It s built for fun, both in its coding and in coding with it. It is not the fastest language with the hottest features. It is not the most stable thing or the best tool for every or even any job. It likely will never be those things. If you use it and you get utility out of it I am happy about that: that is amazing and excites me! I genuinely believe slope to be a useful and fun language to use and I enjoy working on and in the language.

This applies to FORTH. Cool name tho.

Re:Mundane chores are all the rage in gaming on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @02:37PM (#31757328)
LittleBigPlanet was a blast on creative/user-made maps.

You could have a fairly stupid concept (free-falling sponge, with a shark that follows you while only in water), copy the whole level and mod it to whatever new state you wanted.

Anything that has a sane package system (apt, etc), and is able to install LXDE and use it out of the box.

Then, put dwm/[your fav. wm] on top of it, with some autoservices for bluetooth, mtp and stuff.

Re:Quake on the Game Boy Advance [video] on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @02:34PM (#31743865)
Not only ports, but the actual original source, see Fabien Sanglard's work: https://fabiensanglard.net/

He has a "[Game Engine] Black Book" series where he touches old games, its full development history and so on. The Doom one is pretty good.

Re:Making Code Faster on Monday June 13, 2022 @03:00PM (#31730036)
Which one is faster? (C code) Return: see if abs(num) > x.

/logical comparison/ int greater_abs(int num, int x){ return (num > x) || (num+x < 0); }

/squared approach/ int greater_abs2(int num, int x){ return num*num > x; }

See it by yourself, with (and without) optimizations: https://godbolt.org/

What would happen if x is a compile-time constant?

I've been wondering if there is a connection between Lagrangian Mechanics/Calculus of Variations and Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm.

https://profoundphysics.com/lagrangian-mechanics-for-beginne... How you would translate from the discrete, relational approach to the continuous, analytic one?

Re:MicroPython – Python for Microcontrollers on Wednesday June 08, 2022 @08:52AM (#31666520)
The guys at TIC-80 had a proposal of embedding mpython to the engine, so you will be able to write in python: https://github.com/nesbox/TIC-80/issues/935

Re:Ask HN: Non-violent video games with great stories? on Saturday June 04, 2022 @03:51PM (#31624391)
Eh, what about cartoon violence? Like Rayman, Mario, Sonic, Pokemon, Worms...

If you want more story, you could try with visual novels, like Ace Attorney, Professor Leyton, or any DS game.

Its like procedural generation: hide the data into a formula/algorithm, so it makes less space.

Replace "data" with "computation", and "formula" with physical, less expensive processes.

There is no explicit incentive in Universities to make innovations(or work) at the current state-of-the-art of Eng. in software. At least where I live (Chile), we have outdated courses, filler courses that even some teachers say they could be shorter, we have not "a big and fruitful community" of programmers, and so on.

You are NOT rewarded for knowing more info, techniques or anything that are not in the courses. Do you know Linux/Unix? Fine, no one cares. Do you know X language with Y framework? That doesnt give you more grades or be able to skip courses (you cant skip). Do you know about cross-compiling, new shiny things about the field that could be INTERESTING? No one cares.

At least they could make a club or especial program, but nope.

Something like Lua?

It wont run because the QBE compiler doesnt have bindings to those OSes. Only x64.

Meanwhile in Chile, we are losing in a year what we used to lose a decade of water drought in Santiago. The government has a plan to ration water consumption if it gets worse.

Mountains are less green than they used to be.

Now you can make music with clones of trackers ported to modern platforms:

http://schismtracker.org/

https://milkytracker.org/

The main problem is finding samples.

I've always wondered why today we dont have people like them. Is science stagnating (aka Law of diminishing returns)?
Re:Everyone should learn the slide rule (2021) on Sunday April 24, 2022 @10:02PM (#31150113)
Use phosphorescence. You could extend its half life if you shield and prevent erosion, but it could cost more.
By coincidence, I heard this at morning too:

"Give a man a mask and he will tell the truth" - Oscar Wilde

Re:One-line drawings on Saturday April 16, 2022 @07:56AM (#31051610)

Re:Psychedelic frees up depressed brain, study shows on Monday April 11, 2022 @03:19PM (#30993414)
They should test induced psychedelic-like experiencies without substances too, like meditiation or trance with music...
I saw something similar on a pretty obscure spanish forum. They added a sub called /anarchy/, where everyone could edit the CSS and some parts of the page.

It was pretty cool but then someone started to spam anime or music.
