Re:English: A vs. An on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:55AM (#49773172)
Swedish does a similar thing where it takes the plural of an English word as the singular Swedish loanword.

Kex = biscuit, from "cakes"

Keps = hat, from "caps"

Both schwa for me, native speaker who grew up in Scotland.
Re:OpenStreetMap State of the Map 2026 on Friday August 28, 2026 @12:53PM (#49481302)
If you want a fun and easy way to contribute to OSM I recommend StreetComplete. You get a bunch of game-like quest icons for things like "what is the surface of this path?", and "does this road have a cycle path?", then you walk around and fill them in.

Very satisfying and feels like you're doing something actually useful. Also nudges you to visit parts of your neighborhood you might never have been to before.

Re:The Golden Rule for Becoming a Better Writer on Sunday August 23, 2026 @10:39AM (#49409214)
That makes sense to me. If I was about to write a doom metal record I'd probably avoid listening to doom metal for a while.

The difference here, as you point out, is that Bobby already had a lifetime of listening to music and appreciating other singers.

Imagine instead the post was about people who want to make music but don't listen to it.

I literally cannot imagine being a musician who doesn't listen to music.

They make well-engineered keyboards, have excellent customer service and made a very usable web front-end to QMK for configuration.

One thing that might help is setting the backlight colours to mark out different groups of keys.
If you make it 0.887cm you get a nice round one-earth-mass :D
According to this calculator [1] it would take 11.274 times the mass of the earth to create a black hole with a radius of 10cm.

It's ok, the kids learning this stuff these days are on YouTube and Discord.

Re:Half million 'Words with Spaces' missing from dictionaries on Monday February 23, 2026 @12:52PM (#47125895)
Consider phrasal verbs like "shut up", "get lost" or "kick off". Knowing what the parts mean doesn't let you understand the whole.

In your native tongue you take these for granted, but in a second language you have to learn that the sum is more (or different) than the parts.

I think this is exactly it. I started getting RSI, spent a little time researching, bought a zsa moonlander and it cured me.

I haven't turned it into a hobby, it's just a tool that solves a problem.

I've been using Firefox on android for over a decade, including for YouTube, and maybe once a year I encounter a problem where I need to use Chrome for a specific website.
We could, instead, simply eat beans.

I recommend altSnap to get this functionality on Windows.

Renoise just added support for a programmatic sequence generator called pattrns.

By coincidence I just listened to the Decoding the Gurus episode on Sabine https://decoding-the-gurus.captivate.fm/episode/sabine-hosse...

I also just finished a four-and-a-half-hour defence of modern physics by Sean Carroll which has some really good counterarguments in it, as well as a whirlwind history of the last century in physics. https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2023/07/31/245-...

I am conscious of the irony of responding to this post by posting podcasts.

It was specifically Benn Jordan and Venus Theory who cut their ties.

Polarity has never stopped making Bitwig content and I've learned an absolute ton of stuff from him.

Re:Trying to play an isomorphic piano [video] on Monday July 28, 2025 @01:56PM (#44713437)
It's really nice to play a scale, come to the octave, slide, and keep on playing the same shape across the higher strings. It's made the fretboard feel a lot more transparent to me.
Re:Trying to play an isomorphic piano [video] on Monday July 28, 2025 @09:33AM (#44710728)
On guitar in fourths tuning, you only need to learn each interval and chord shape once, compared to multiple permutations in standard tuning. Not sure how much difference this makes over the long run as another poster pointed out, but for me it made the process seem much less overwhelming and motivated me to start learning how to make my own chord voicings, which is something I wouldn't have done in standard tuning.
Re:Trying to play an isomorphic piano [video] on Monday July 28, 2025 @09:29AM (#44710702)
I haven't played a linear isomorphic keyboard, but I do play guitar with an isomorphic tuning (EADGCF) and I have an Intuitive Instruments Exquis, which is a hex-grid. I feel like melody makes more sense linearly but harmony makes more sense in 2D.

https://dualo.com/en/exquis/

Re:Trying to play an isomorphic piano [video] on Monday July 28, 2025 @09:26AM (#44710672)
I use all-fourths tuning on guitar (EADGCF) which makes the fretboard isometric.

You lose some idiomatic guitar vocabulary, but if you don't care about that you gain the ability to construct your own chord voicings much more easily, and only need to remember one fingering for each chord instead of three.

Re:Instapaper Rakuten Kobo Integration on Saturday July 26, 2025 @12:13PM (#44695143)
I tried to install it recently to a linux container running on proxmox. I gave up after half an hour because it requires a ton of PHP dependencies and there's no instructions or script provided to install them. I guess if you use the docker version it should be easier, but that wasn't an option for me.
Here's a video showing how to use it in the Renoise DAW.

Re:Octobass on Friday June 20, 2025 @01:07PM (#44329769)
I can't speak for YouTube's specific compression, but since there's less information in low frequency sounds they should compress better than high frequency sounds.

Anecdata: the bass in low bitrate online drum and bass radio in the 2000s always came through cleaner than the mids and treble.

Re:Mozilla to shut down Pocket on July 8 on Thursday May 22, 2025 @01:21PM (#44064290)
I use pocket all the time to save articles to read on my kobo, which has a pretty good first-party integration in the OS.

I wonder what Rakuten are going to do.
