Wouldn’t previous Opus models be able to solve them too? In my experience Sonnet is often lackluster.
Re:Why is every rationalist blog post way too long? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:26PM (#50097558)
I’m an avid less wrong reader, but this is incredible
Fall in line, be a good little citizen and you have nothing to worry about.
Without the pelicans I don’t know what to think

>Draw a Hacker News-style comment thread. Top comment by a user named "pelican_enjoyer": "Without the pelicans I don't know what to think." Reply from "minimaxir" in a grumpy tone: "Since people keep doing it: no, you don't have to make an allusion to Simon's pelicans every time a Hacker News thread about a new LLM pops up. It's a lower-effort joke than even Reddit memes." Beside the thread, show a pelican riding a bicycle, looking smug.

I checked mine and it was pretty accurate. Nothing very concerning.

Exactly. My laptop just never goes to sleep, and it’s been great. What else do you need?

>but they aren’t conscious You don’t know that. >language is orthogonal to consciousness I don’t think that is true either. The beings we think of being conscious all are social creatures and communicate in some form.

Give me a new oasis please Amazon
Who cares? Minor spelling mistakes rank very low on my list of grievances with the administration.
The answer to my first question

Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @11:36AM (#49895167)
Wait until you hear a detailed explanation of the magic system for the 5th time. Still a good series.
I can’t believe how cynical everyone on HN is about this. Sure Sama is a chronic liar, and maybe this is a farce; but a lot of very intelligent people are afraid of the danger we are bringing about by racing to superintelligence.

All I really would like is for some of you to CONSIDER THAT YOURE INCORRECT. Just imagine that people ringing the fire alarms are being sincere. Please entertain the position with an open mind.

Why wouldn’t they be? How is this surprising. A drop in the bucket.
Re:Solitaire Alone Together on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @12:47PM (#49804232)
This is fun! I like the vibe of doing solitary activities in the “company” of other strangers. It’s neat. I like the screen saver
Re:I hate you Microsoft on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:02PM (#49747237)
What they did to windows is criminal. I honestly cannot believe the state of windows 11. I will never work a job again where I have to use windows.
Re:Taco Bell Programming (2010) on Thursday September 17, 2026 @02:41PM (#49744795)
This is fun. You can get a long way with simple tools and a lot of the time it makes sense to not over complicate things, but obviously breaks down at a certain point. What about: State / failures / retries / indempotency / latency / multithreading correctness.. Data sets larger than one machine can hold. The fact that other humans (maybe not anymore) have to maintain your shell scripts.
Re:A warning about 'model welfare' on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @10:52AM (#49727953)
>AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. They do not have innate preferences or underlying motivations.

Opening paragraph, stated without evidence. Im not entirely convinced this is true. It likely is, but at some point it very well might stop being true.

Don’t brandish your weapon and no one will know you have it. Obviously the case here.
Re:What Is Your P(doom)? on Friday September 11, 2026 @09:42PM (#49667800)
For me, P(doom) = .50 If I wasn’t a dad I’d say higher
Re:Solving the Jane Street Reverse Engineering Challenge on Friday September 04, 2026 @09:54AM (#49564718)
oh boy here we go again
Re:Improving our alignment and security efforts on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:06AM (#49531598)
It’s always interesting to me the sentiment here surrounding AI risk. As if it’s all a joke, or just a way to stifle competition. I think it’s become more apparent that this technology is dangerous and maybe catastrophically so. Getting your queries routed to a worse model sucks.. but bio hazards are real. It’s hard to patch biology, vaccines take time. Let alone the many other reasons for P(doom).. like the fact that our current systems don’t seem very aligned to me and we are rapidly handing off our thinking to them.
Is there anything out there comparable to my original Kindle Oasis? Mine has lived in airplane mode its whole life and I’m afraid for when it finally dies
Re:Get your Windows license refund on Friday August 28, 2026 @10:27AM (#49479011)
The server editions are junk too, lol.
Re:How Did Rogue Generate Its Random Dungeons? on Thursday August 06, 2026 @09:52PM (#49205039)
I never got into Rogue, though I did love Nethack. If you’re into these actual rogue-likes, I picked up Caves of Qud recently, highly recommend.
Fun thought exercise: why would this be a terrible idea?
Sweet! Anyone wanna buy a boat?
Re:What if useful AI is a fantasy? on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @06:46PM (#49091011)
I seriously don’t understand the naysayers around here. Have they just not used anything past gpt4? You can’t just outsource all of your thinking to them, but they’re obviously useful.
Re:MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad on Saturday July 25, 2026 @11:24AM (#49048360)
I never even thought of that use case! What kind of stuff do you do on a computer while doing procedures? Like reference material? Tracking what you’ve done?
Jail goblin sympathizers!
Re:The Kimi K3 Moment on Saturday July 18, 2026 @03:49PM (#48961624)
Kimi K3 is really good, but it’s obviously worse than Fable, usually worse than Opus, in my experience.
