Not just twitter, whatsapp, facebook, etc - the DNS system needs replacing too.
Re:We Crush, Poison, and Destroy Insects at Our Own Peril on Monday January 25, 2021 @07:00AM (#25902199)
In a sense spiders are part of the problem - insect killers. I keep one in the kitchen window, and a little jumping one lives on the bedroom roof, migrates across to the windows a couple of times a day, but all others strictly belong outside.
Re:Software engineering topics I changed my mind on on Sunday January 24, 2021 @02:03AM (#25889968)
Why not just have casual conversations instead? Standups are one those things that people disagree on endlessly without discussing context - their worth depends on the team. On my current team they're worthless. I'd rather have casual conversation, but that's like squeezing blood from a stone. Departure planning underway.

You want change but without making any effort?
Re:Danes Get 20-Year 0% Mortgages on Tuesday January 05, 2021 @01:20PM (#25648846)
Psychology. Here in the UK the the lemming factor would kick in strongly - toilet paper, bicycles ... negative interest rate. The moment those words are uttered by the BBC you could expect the country to be covered with little puddles of excitement leading to the nearest bank. Some phrases trigger a threshold where reason loses strength - fomo? Panic?
There's a clue in the title.
Re:Nim in 2020: A Short Recap on Thursday December 31, 2020 @09:57AM (#25593204)
I consider Nim to be a better Go.

Re:New coronavirus variant: What do we know? on Monday December 21, 2020 @07:35AM (#25494331)
Yes, it's in other countries too eg Australia and Netherlands.
Re:Why CockroachDB and PostgreSQL Are Compatible on Thursday December 17, 2020 @10:54AM (#25456669)
It's not just about (big) scalability - redundancy. Cockroach 3 node cluster is a no brainer to setup, just runs. I see cockroach as far easier to work with than Cassandra, and more easily expanded than postgres - sits very well between the two.
Re:'New variant' of coronavirus identified on Monday December 14, 2020 @12:04PM (#25419902)
Also "20 000 new cases" - out of how many tests? 20 000? 100 000? There are claims of some companies returning only positive results, others only negative. Also the data collection has been so erroneous that analyses are therefore meaningless, and response action therefore just theatre.
Re:'New variant' of coronavirus identified on Monday December 14, 2020 @12:00PM (#25419849)
That's the problem - who has credibility? Professor pants-down? Sweden? Germany? The high profile person on that side, or the high profile person on the other side?
Re:Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011) on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:48AM (#25419678)
A/c in the context of the article?
Re:Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011) on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:15AM (#25419229)
Totally disagree with the layers philosophy. Way too much fuss. In mid-winter London I wear a t-shirt and a jacket. Perfectly warm. Just get a good jacket. Easy on, off, no ceremony.
Re:Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011) on Monday December 14, 2020 @11:13AM (#25419183)
Overdo this and you will get mouldy walls.
Re:Why do so many people want us back in the office? on Saturday September 12, 2020 @10:22AM (#24452669)
I have no interest in being in the office. The commute is horrid and a waste of time. The socialising is insignificant. The water cooler never has more than one visitor at a time, so the idea of it being an idea exchange is myth. Everyone communicates via chat in office, with headphones on. Being able to separate work and private life is a matter of self discipline, the other matters are not. The only thing I want is for coffee shops to return to normal.
Re:Avoiding the Global Lobotomy on Saturday June 06, 2020 @08:30AM (#23438700)
I have a different account eg for hn on every device. I don't add my email and immediately forget my password, so the accounts are all disposable, and doomed. Karma has no value on my accounts.
Re:Building binary deb packages: a practical guide on Wednesday June 03, 2020 @05:38AM (#23401621)
The second half of your comment is exactly the experience I recently had when trying for the first time. I quit and built a container image instead.
Re:Spanish schedules are downright weird (2016) on Friday May 29, 2020 @07:20AM (#23348651)
I never get in before 10:30 because I refuse to use the tube before ~9:30. If it gets crowded while I'm on it I get off and wait. I have to extend my day accordingly. The transport and offices spaces are the productivity killers imo - demotivating and disruptive.
Just to provide the opposite perspective, that sounds like my hell. A weekly catch-up, fine, and the rest of the time if I have anything worth chatting about I will. I can't stand the ritual ceremonies.
If I'm not mistaken it's not the entire red series - it excludes 8TB.
Re:Life Is Made of Unfair Coin Flips on Sunday April 12, 2020 @09:53AM (#22848248)
To some degree depending on how productive they are externally, eg bee vs fox.
Re:IBM will offer free COBOL training on Saturday April 11, 2020 @07:15AM (#22841073)
But you chose your profession, it wasn't assigned to you. You knew going in that either it's more about people, less about money if you're a nurse, or more money if you're a cardiac surgeon. Am I missing something?
Re:IBM will offer free COBOL training on Saturday April 11, 2020 @07:05AM (#22841040)
Can the hardware not be upgraded? The article says the system is struggling with 400k people a week in new York. That's terribly slow. No overclocking?
Why would one downvote for disagreeing?
Re:A Man Who Saw the Pandemic Coming on Saturday March 14, 2020 @10:54AM (#22575702)
I agree. These people are not just selfish, they're idiots - I've seen purchases of years worth of toilet paper. My local shop had empty shelves for about a week but now has stacks on the floor as well as full shelves. The sanitiser stocks will soon arrive too - cash in on the nutters.
Next thing you know you'll be expected to wipe your arse after toileting.
Heathrow should be scrapped and replaced with the estuary airport.
Re:Now using Zstandard instead of xz for package compression on Sunday January 05, 2020 @09:53AM (#21961469)
Hn rules are to be ignored. It's _hacker_ news.
Re:Good times create weak men on Wednesday January 01, 2020 @08:47PM (#21932294)
And any issue can be fixed the HN way - write a rule forbidding discussion of the issue.
