News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

In the case of France, the vulnerability was announced in August, 2025.

I believe gigantic fines are appropriate. They need to be of a size where the entire management team has significant financial issues for many years to come, even after having sold their houses, big cars, etc.

Nothing will improve until there are personal consequences.

Right, iPhone and iPad must be on the same wifi network for normal phone calls to work.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipadf97892b2/ipad...

Facetime / Signal will work fine over just data.

Is that how you'd like someone to respond if one of yours passed away from preventable situations?

Most nursing homes are barely staffed to handle basic hygiene. They don't have the resources to manage days of an entire building crossing a healthy temperature range.

I make credit card payments from Linux Mint and OpenBSD regularly.
Then why are we today seeing headlines like 'AI agent deleted our TV show' instead of people taking accountability?

The headline should be 'Executives cause 100 days worth of TV production re-work'.

> It is kind of shocking to me how TUIs are enjoying a bit of dev tool renaissance right now

For me, it's because I can SSH from my wimpy laptop to systems with hundreds of CPU cores and TBs of RAM - and use the same tools and workflows that I am used to.

> Not sure GDPR applies to apps though.

GDPR applies to we the people and the organizations who hold our data. Doesn't matter if it's morse code on paper strips.

If we can dictate warnings on tobacco packages, we can dictate the wording on consent banners to not be "We care about your privacy" but instead "We want to track you for profit".

Re:Font-Family Recommendations on Monday June 29, 2026 @05:37PM (#48725612)
If browsers were slightly better at asking users, maybe we'd all have our three favourite fonts and background-, text- and link-colours instead of what someone else prefers we stare at all day.

Oh, you have nothing to hide? Kindly paste all your payment and login credentials that your browser stores. Later we'll need to see all your DMs on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, etc.

Finally we'll want to know about disputes you've had with intimate partners, employers and other service providers, especially powerful ones like healthcare, insurance and financial organisations.

No? You either use AI or vibecoding, like the tag page says:

> It’s a short, specific puzzle. I’d love to know if you think the "Correct" path I designed matches your real-world experience, or if I’m off base.

As someone about to step into a C-suite role: I picked the "correct" path and as long as people are reasonable, it works well.

I've used this but you might need to use your browser's translate feature:

Many experiments have shown that when you take away people's concerns about money for housing and food, that frees up energy and attention to do other things.

Like the famous experiment in Finland where homeless people were given cash with no strings attached and most were able to rise out of their despair. The healthcare professionals could then focus their energy on the harder cases. It also saved a bunch of money in the process.

Can you think of a name or model by any chance?

> Hardly a "roll out across the UK".

What's your threshold for when it becomes a problem? Should we wait until it becomes a problem, or should we try to stop this level of facial recognition?

You should also assume this is a proof of concept. It'll get improved and scaled down to run on every police vehicle, and on every camera the police already control.

When you start digging past their marketing material, you quickly discover that these organisations are just right-wing fronts, against trans-people, against abortion.

Here's a 38 minute video that walks through some of the recent major incidents.

Feminists would not campaign to take down games (with zero sexual content) about queer lives made by queer people.

Re:Study mode on Tuesday July 29, 2025 @04:22PM (#44727833)
There's a gigantic difference between outsourcing your brain to generative AI (LLMs, Stable Diffusion, ..) and pattern recognition that recognises songs, birds, plants or health issues.
Re:Study mode on Tuesday July 29, 2025 @01:38PM (#44726193)
> It used to be that if you got stuck on a concept, you're basically screwed.

We were able to learn before LLMs.

Libraries are not a new thing. FidoNet, USENET, IRC, forums, local study/user groups. You have access to all of Wikipedia. Offline, if you want.

> In “Irreversible Damage,” Abigail Shrier argues youth are being “fast-tracked” into medical transition — a claim experts say isn’t true and harms trans youth.

Anti-trans activities is the fascist agenda. Fascism should always be stopped. Saving democracy and lives of transpeople by stopping fascists is not controversial in any way.

> Both extremes want the same thing.

Citation needed. The 'extreme' feminism & LGBT tends to revolve around identical pay, being able to walk down the street without getting assaulted or being able to work without being harassed or discriminated against.

Sounds like it's not overrated, then. You just prefer that other people write portable C and package GNU Make for all systems instead of you writing POSIX Make.

But not portable. Please don't use them outside of your own non-distributable toy projects.

Not to mention the ethical / copyright / misbehaving scrapers.

Re: on Friday June 13, 2025 @09:03AM (#44268143)
Wild. I evaluate LLMs about once per year, and can't wait for the generative AI bubble to burst.

I most recently asked for a privilege-separated JMAP client daemon (dns, fetcher, writer) using pledge() and unveil() that would write to my Maildir, my khal dir and contacts whenever it had connectivity and otherwise behave like a sane network client.

I got 800 lines of garbage C. Structs were repeated all over the place, the config file was #defined four times, each with a different name and path.

> Who do you think built and maintained the socioeconomic systems that allowed women to focus on creating and raising children?

This statement completely ignores how our current world is shaped by white supremacy and the patriarchy. Women were prohibited from taking part in anything expect raising children (which even today is seen as contributing nothing).

Women who dared venture outside the home had their work ignored or credit stolen. Eunice Foote and Rosalind Franklin are two obvious examples.

Later, textiles, telecoms and computing were powered by women labour and they were expected to stay in their lane so the men could take credit and the money.

> Women have stopped making babies.

Couples have stopped making babies.

We already tried the whole "not resisting fascist-adjacent people every living second" and it didn't turn out great for a lot of people. Think about it for a moment.
Almost everything that has any impact in the world is political:

The clothes we wear, the food we eat, where and how our children are schooled, the devices and services we have available, consumer rights for said devices and services, etc.

We are not living longer, fewer infants / kids are dying.

> you can get houses near major cities for usd 80k.

There are 53706 homes for sale today. 2784 of those are actual homes, not empty lots, costing less than 600K DKK.

I would not expect to live a healthy, comfortable life in most homes at that price range. Draft, mold, poor insulation and high energy bills.
