As much as I’m sentimental about C/C++ myself, changing language spec every 3 years is not what I call standards
I’m waiting until somebody vibe code a proper desktop apps to provide more diversity than MS vs Open Office. just like I see options blossomed in the “Creative Suite” field.
But maybe I’m just one of those who don’t like web office apps and/or google docs related workflows.
I understand advantages of rust as they are sales pitched but I also see disadvantages which even experienced rust developers start pitching too. My point is that rust is not ultimate answer to every programming issue regardless of AI being used or not.
I also disagree that even if you vibe code in natural language (English or any other), platform selection still matters and it’s naturally a preference and experience related reflection of a vibe coder who positions himself as architect, product owner and analyst more than a single platform choice zealot.
In such case selection of modern C/C++ is equally revenant as religiously pitching about a single rust feature as differentiator here. It simply reflects the ability to control author’s vision of the outcome and ability to control it.
Nice stuff and welcome to the scene
I ditched both to favor Firefox many many years ago.
There is… standard library and posix standard or other system level libraries, once you learn them you discover you don’t need to auto download a library to convert string to bool that relies on 5 other stupid libraries to work all together.
Lean yet complete standard library is what should be preferred instead of that supply chain, especially in AI era that makes half of them obsolete and redundant.
Rust comes with dependency hell comparable to NodeJs, and sorting out memory issues is experience not platform choice. Simplicity of C versus complexity of Rust plus Rust being a new “java” religion to solve C++ ain’t convincing to everybody. We had this religion already. Every new generation comes with an idea to fix C/C++ while some still prefer to stay disciplined in the first one and let it fix itself.
I was not thinking about vanilla C and CGI but I wrote my own modern web api server app in C++ (std+boost only) and I found it extremely pleasant experience. very reliable and little supply chain/dependency hell problematic too.
It’s for intranet business app so although it’s not yet production ready yet, definitively winning against many other modern approaches in web development in my consideration, and quite refreshing POC project.
I’m with this opinion. There is a lot of cheap to premium price handhelds on ARM that already serve the purpose without a need to break the original hardware and replace it with emulated clone. Unless case is 3d printed or sth.
I don’t believe it was or continually is limited to text only, but I do believe we had netiquette back then which helped to reconsider spamming internet with media and other decorators, only to have it all forgotten 72h later
Now I should feel pity about programmers who broke the internet… right. I rather wish they flop
600M is not that much actually, just three proper celebrity houses in LA or sth… he’s still poor-man to run a trillion dollar company. SteveB had better deal out that responsibility.
I personally don’t see macos anyhow competing with Linux or to be anyhow comparable to Linux in each others sweat points. linux dominated server side, so be its fair victory but it’s continually shit kind of clone of many things done in MacOs desktop experience. It just kept cloning Apple since forever to repeat a glimpse of that experience even during Next times with WindowMaker and then with many incarnations of modern desktop systems to compare with OSX and MacOs continually and in that direction. Linux is open, it’s different, that comes with value but still a little handicapped brother to MacOS desktop experience with continually f*up fundamentals even if you include wayland as the base. So is MacOs in servers but there Apple just resigned last year and stopped pretending they have servers. Both have only one thing in common, shell with base posix tools. Nothing else. And none are as open as original idea for Unix as this idea is long dead and linux tries to make Stallman’s wet dream about GNU system come true as his own kernel implementation did not move forward much it at all since mid 80s.. that’s the only UNIX reality that matters.. rest is bureaucracy and 5000 pages of POSIX standard nobody cares about as this is more about C libraries than kernel’s internals.
In parallel to the story itself, for f.. sake, the website that hosts the story uses 1700+ tracking partners to operate and pushes for cookie consent. We should ban links to such sites equally strong as IoT devices in subject as my personal opinion
In the area where instead of Waymo, local taxi driver who still look like me and speaks my language drives the cabs and gives me discounts when we both have last ride back home from downtown. And we talk to each other more than sue each other
I think that if you are 40+ which is BBS target continually, then you should know all neighborhood nerds worth knowing, internet BBSes where you don’t lose time on idiocracy is exactly that neighborhood worth virtual saving. Post code doesn’t matter that much as the right mental model to survive and thrive there.
BBSes is one of those last places in the internet where you still can find your tribe without algorithms and, too much crying about politics. I’m glad it’s still hard UX entry to many as we don’t need many there. Just those enough few who get it
looks like a typical level of silly if not idiotic regressions if AI is involved in coding and there is no quality control over the whole process before releasing, just trusting AI did the job well.. to me, based on symptoms described in this article.
I see the same in Microsoft software for a while, core office is heavily developed by AI these days for sure, considering the same level of idiotic bugs that are definitively unchecked QA/QC regressions.
My 12+ months learning is that quality suffers primarily when I cannot find the right working process to assure it. It's not software development as a process but software engineering as a whole holistic picture across all departments and traditional roles (dev,test,devops/sysops, pm, etc..)
I also found that what is commonly called "spec-driven development" is just a different CMMI alike model that works better with AI than anything AGILE. which is also nothing new.. just realisation that AI is the ultimate proof agile development/manifestos is a dead end.
there are many other reflections about the whole process to ensure quality, good architecture, minimizing regressions and providing business continuity and proper, reliable, SLA driven maintenance.
Actually not that much different than certain human-centric models.. just need to be adapted to the AI reality to truly benefit from it.
when that is done, from leadership perspective, it is a working process that brings similar outcomes and quality. not exactly cheaper atomically, but faster and brings more scalable opportunity to drive multiple projects within the same resource pool.
I think that's what is mostly experimented today and that is also of course exhausting traditional developers.
If you believe software still can be sold. as I do believe further development of AI may completely redefine buy vs. build capabilities and potential directions.
My bet is that half of the software developed so far may be obsolete 10 years from now and so the businesses behind them. SaaS specifically.
AI is not for programmers, they will always complain and given time and resources can of course produce better atomic code. AI is for a combination of a business analyst, architect and product manager in one person who has capacity in coding but decided this is limited role in the whole software engineering lifecycle. With the right attitude and of course certain level of micro management over AI (which they had to do with human programmers as well) they can achieve the same or similar results with much less communication friction, less people to maintain that teamwork and get closer to solving issues they find rather than discussing philosophy of programming and other manifestos of the craft that stopped being prestigious or unique and that’s the key point of complaint when AI is given wrong people to use.
How did it end up, because it’s not a new thing to happen. First time I read about this guy’s border crossing case was few months ago and was of course very much highlighted for the level of surveillance govs can do.. but I also read some
Time later that by the letter of law he was not proven wrongdoing.
Are we still discussing a border crossing case that is long historic or there is still an active drama for this guy going on?
Nice, I did not know author wrote so many different books about assembly coding.
This is nice, I recently vibe coded my own media player as I mostly listen to my own digitalized audio library and all software available today sucks to cover my scenario or consumes way too much resources by my taste… but random triggering Apple Music happens so often and it’s so annoying. Good article explaining how the trick works, should be easy to self-implement without installing another 3rd party software from nowhere known source
This is an article Microsoft Windows, Office, Outlook and MS Teams developers and product managers should read, they continually break the working software only to come back regularly to what they have invented already, in the meantime annoying many who had to experience the experiments in between…
Interesting concept for all new social platforms that already live in federated, distributed environments that share communication protocols and communication data formats.
I bet more difficult to push existing commercial platforms to anyhow consider.
That would make marketing tools to manage social communications and posting across popular social media, much easier. Never the less Social Marketing tools have already invented we similar analogy just to make control over own content and feedback across instances and networks.
We still live in a world where some would say BSKY some would say Mastodon is the future… while everybody still has facebook and instagram and youngsters tik tok too. Those are closed platforms where only tools to hack them, not standards persist
Although I don’t like pascal notation in C (I’m conservative snake style forever kind of guy myself) I agree with others who praise clarity.
I have done something similar some time ago but more like a production ready ExpressJs alike framework in C++ using only STL and Boost.
Definitely C/C++ can be considered as a very productive environment free of all the “modern web” dependency hell many other coding platforms introduce by default.
Interesting attempt. If that worked then maybe Darwin and then a virtualization/emulation layer to launch MacOs apps on Windows. That would be nice equalizer to what’s possible with full hardware acceleration the other way, back from MacOS.
I’m glad to see that more and more articles and opinions about AI are focused on how it works and it works great just the process and mind thoughtfulness has to adapt and evolve to fully utilize the tool.
That’s so much better than wasting time on the frustrated who just negate without a meaningful try.
I share most of the experience and learning with the author, I just still don’t know how to name the whole process.
The whole vibe thing has already brought negativity into terminology because of all negating.
Closest thing in history of software engineering practice from the past is XP (Xstreme Programmimg) with its pair programming approach. It was a precursor of anything modern agile. Invented at the end of 90s
It’s just this time, my pair programming mate is computer instead of human person, but I treat it as junior to me and review, organize, while coding, testing, documenting is delegate and we jointly do the analysis as a part of the discussion.
I can agree, it’s strongly augmented experience and weird often to newcomers to adapt, but when a critical path to succeed is discovered, it works great and results are a blast!
