Re:MIT graduate students vote to unionize on Saturday April 09, 2022 @07:05PM (#30973004)
Why not have them sign with the other company, graduate, quit immediately, and join yours?
Bestseller in the publishing world is practically 'natural' in the food world.
I'll be happy if it happens, but I'm not holding my breath. Abuse is literally in their corporate DNA. I guess if his vitriol was universal, maybe that makes it more palatable than hate targeted at one group? What a world.

And for the record, I'm not a fan of purity tests or waiting for Superman. Just because they haven't scrubbed Jobs doesn't mean they are unfit to have made this move.

How many murals or paintings of Steve Jobs are still on the Apple campus?
yes, but also with 100+ years of engineering, for far fewer companies/nations, and with trillions (more?) thrown at the discipline. Software engineering is, what, 50 years old, tops?
Re:US home construction surges 22.6%, third monthly increase on Tuesday August 25, 2020 @02:06AM (#24268495)
Cheap labor maybe from desperate contractors/handy workers? Low rates?
Re:I lost my boyfriend to cancer 'conspiracy theories’ on Saturday July 18, 2020 @02:51PM (#23883792)
Just starting cycling and feeling lost. This is damn impressive! Consider me inspired on multiple fronts.
Re:Quora goes permanently remote-first on Thursday June 25, 2020 @10:30PM (#23648112)
And what is the breakdown of executives, managers, etc between on-prem and remote?
Re:LibriVox: Free Public Domain Audiobooks on Thursday June 18, 2020 @03:41AM (#23560744)
Highly recommend David Clarke's work, especially his Sherlock Holmes readings. For me, he's the best Sherlock narrator I've heard.

He also runs a chain of Houston coffee shops; their mugs sit proudly in my cabinet! Felt great to compensate someone for many many hours of public good.

price?
Re:Classism in America on Wednesday April 06, 2016 @10:08PM (#11444148)
I lived in the south for some time, and being from the midwest ('no' accent), I was always called a yankee. Sometimes as a joke, but there were plenty of cases where it made me feel uncomfortable.
Re:What Zillow doesn't want you to know about its listing gap on Tuesday October 06, 2015 @06:37PM (#10342912)
yep, and even something as 'simple' as images is difficult. If an image gets removed from the feed, it typically must be removed from the listing page. Tons of little things like this make the data incredibly prickly.
Re:How we ended up with microservices on Thursday September 10, 2015 @01:37AM (#10196282)
one possible issue is that the site will be like a chimera, as everyone has slightly different styles of doing UI work and interaction code.
Re:The Internet of Way Too Many Things on Monday September 07, 2015 @02:38PM (#10182483)
Another common one: people posting that they're going on vacation or posting pictures from vacation while still on it. Sure, your friends might not break into your place, but what if their laptop gets stolen and the thief sees you're not going to be home for a week?
Re:What's Coming in PostgreSQL 9.5 on Thursday July 02, 2015 @09:32PM (#9822890)
do you use docker containers for pg? One thing you could do is use a separate data volume and clone it for every new spinup.
Re:PostGIS 2.2 leveraging power of PostgreSQL 9.5 on Saturday May 23, 2015 @12:51PM (#9593456)
This is awesome! We're looking forward to ST_AsTWKB. We've had to do some interesting things to get our data small enough for use on the front end, and hope that this makes our life easier.

Found my current job through a monthly Who's Hiring thread on HN. Check this site: http://hnhiring.com/
Re:Testosterone is the drug of the future on Wednesday February 04, 2015 @07:40PM (#9001065)
I do agree that it should be up to the professionals, but consider amateurs moving into professional sports.

If college football players can't take steroids, they will get __destroyed__ in the NFL. If college players can take steroids, then highschool players will stand no chance at moving up. Likewise, if you make it fine for high school players, middle school gets punished, etc.

I don't doubt that professionals could successfully regulate it and do it (mostly) responsibly. I have a severe lack of faith in desperate parents living vicariously through their kids in little league games.

Re:Affordable adjustable standing desk on Monday November 03, 2014 @07:01PM (#8554389)
Not to mention the current refund fee of 15%..what a nightmare. Reading through their twitter and facebook walls is spooky to say the least.
Re:How bad is the California drought? on Tuesday October 28, 2014 @06:02PM (#8523872)
I'm a bit north of LA, but the country club golf course has never been greener ;-)

Joking aside, it does feel like people are trying to make a difference and conserve.

Re:Facebook's Bus Drivers Seek Union on Monday October 06, 2014 @03:22AM (#8414657)
It's not that simple. There are gigantic forces involved: government officials at several levels, unions, etc.
Re:Passenger Privacy in the NYC Taxicab Dataset on Tuesday September 16, 2014 @06:40PM (#8327522)
I wonder if you could build a small, money generating business from answering exactly that. If you could get more recent data dumps at some interval, you could even provide an email alert system.
Re:Announcing a specification for PHP on Wednesday July 30, 2014 @05:37PM (#8111160)
I work at a PHP shop, coming from a Python background. I chose to come here for the team, certainly not the language. When I asked about why some things are inconsistent in PHP compared to other languages, its age was a common defense. I was shocked to find that Python is older than PHP, and Ruby is the same age!
I lived in Chattanooga for a summer and was on the EPB gigabit fiber; having a peered YouTube CDN was a gigantic win. The speeds were unreal!
Re:Amazon Dash on Friday April 04, 2014 @06:29PM (#7534857)
To some extent, though. When I'm home, my mother gets extremely frustrated (still!) that there isn't one remote that does everything.
Re:Show HN: My Desk Chair on Friday March 14, 2014 @05:23PM (#7401986)
My experience is very similar to keithwarren's. I lift almost every work day, and generally just stand to work out some of the stress in my muscles. I prefer sitting. Some days my shoulders will bug me or something so it's nice to be up and shake around a little bit.

The Embody is just the best :-) People can't believe that a chair could make such a huge difference, but it really does.

Re:Show HN: My Desk Chair on Thursday March 13, 2014 @06:27PM (#7395566)
What about a convertible desk and an Embody? It's my setup and I'm a huge fan.
Re:Man gets 14 years for ‘lasing’ helicopter on Monday March 10, 2014 @08:03PM (#7376561)
What if your significant other was in a life flight helicopter, and someone lased it?
Re:Testing at Airbnb on Thursday February 27, 2014 @09:31PM (#7316915)
you did. Thanks for answering! I'm definitely the one leading the (small) group of devs who test here. Your article was great motivation for our cause.

If you're a python developer, http://www.tdd-django-tutorial.com/ is an excellent resource.
