Re:Car allergic to vanilla ice cream on Wednesday September 20, 2023 @01:30PM (#37587054)
This reminds me of a strange recurring experience I used to have with electronics in my house.

In that house,on certain days of the week at midnight, something that sounded like recordings of political speeches from WW2 would be audibly (but faintly so) from all of stationary electronics. It was so faint, that it was usually hard to pinpoint any one source, and the words used weren't understandable, so it usually sounded like it was coming from everywhere all at once, and like it was an old recording.

This would happen even if they were unplugged. Even if my power went out.

I though I was either going crazy, or my house was literally haunted by hitlers ghost.

Well one day I was in my car and recognized something on the radio that reminded me of this spooky problem I had.

It was the signon of a Catholic am radio station that opened up with Gregorian chanting, and a sermon. This signon happened at the same time on the same days of every week.

Turns out, the wiring in that house was somehow functioning as an am radio receiver, and some common components would vibrate out the audio encoded in the radio signal.

Well if you are interested in the ways in which men especially are trained to self censor (emotionally and verbally), see all of the ways in which a man can spend an inordinate amount of time literally locked in prison or getting murdered, that a woman is highly unlikely to.

A mans whole life is self censorship. Their 'place' is literally a box or a grave. Supposing he hasn't already blackpilled out of indepent thought and self expression.

Not to say that women don't have their lot to deal with too, for sure. But I have a really hard time believing it's comparable. Sorry.

It would involve serious consideration of the opinions you don't agree with, rather than just qualifying them in the most hyperbolic and dismissive way possible. Hopefully ai is better capable of this sort of reasoning than people are.
It may, but it doesn't provide the motivation to bother, especially if you only ever get caught at the end of your career.

Being 'declared possible' seems meaningless. Isn't it already implicitly possible?
Re:Limb lengthening surgery is becoming more popular on Saturday April 30, 2022 @05:33PM (#31219590)
Yes it's a relative term, but it's a comparison; it's being used as a relative metric.

And ultimately, every sort of trust system requires bootstrapping on points of centralization.

People are like 'well yeah obviously' but no, not obviously in everyway to everyone. And the statistics will not save you when someone finds the next oopsie that can steal your investment, and there will always be a next one. Neither will any institutions.

"I can get back to school and wage slavery at any point in my life later"

I wouldn't be so sure. You ever wonder why older people are always talking about 'the good ole days'? It isn't because the world was better, it's because they were better equipped to live in it.

Re:Pop Culture Has Fallen Out of Love with the Nuclear Family on Friday February 18, 2022 @11:33AM (#30387821)
Similarly, the average American has fallen out of love with pop culture, since it isn't actually popular culture, it's the fringes of culture trying to drive the status quo.

It can't actually succeed though, because it doesn't agree with itself. At best it can help humanize the fringes. At worst, it will do the opposite because it tells the status quo that out of all of the multitudes of valid ways there are to be, theirs is the least valid.

Reminds me of how ASCII '3' is hexadecimal 33.
Well Microsoft is pivoting into being a cloud services provider, the OS provides ui integrations for these services to make them more compelling, but the thing itself isn't the OS.

I'm with you, and I was right about the apple watch. This(vr in general) feels like a one-off of the next big thing, like the pda was to the smartphone.
Re:Mississippi is 37th state to legalize medical marijuana on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @01:44PM (#30350823)
That's probably it. I don't know enough about the product or THC chemistry pharmacology to say, but I've talked to some users who say they got a THC high from them, one of which was my mother who thought it was a cbd product when she bought them.
Re:Mississippi is 37th state to legalize medical marijuana on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @01:41PM (#30350781)
The stuff I am talking about lists a percentage of THC on the packaging and people are buying it almost exclusively to get high.

I was dubious at first too, but I have talked to several people who have used them and they say they are getting a THC high, and the packaging even communicates the THC content.

But I have no reciepts. It could be an entirely illegal Enterprise given the proprietor.

Re:Is it wrong to scan random QR-codes? on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @10:13AM (#30347461)
Nope. Was hoping this article enumerated a few, and made some sort of compelling argument to the contrary, but it didn't.
Re:The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @10:02AM (#30347326)
To me it seems like they are a pot calling the kettle brown so as to divert attention from the fact that their own blackness is the larger offense.

'these guys are just stupid' as they engage in overt deception and manipulation to even make such an accusation.

Re:Education is its own privilege on Monday February 14, 2022 @11:49AM (#30334223)
Go figure, racial stereotyping attracts racial stereotyping. And while I agree that these things are privileges, the modern usage of privilege implies 'mere' privilege, like you just won some free lottery.

That sort of thinking is how you sabotage your your own access to similar privileges.

Re:The Factorio Mindset on Friday February 11, 2022 @02:58PM (#30306271)
Yeah an earlier poster mentioned something about there being no black box problems and that all the information to do anything is already out there to read. I think this is only true if you are looking to beat the game in a prescribed way. There is a massive amount of space for experimentation and defining your own resource restrictions and goal state.
Re:Branch off of main on Thursday February 03, 2022 @09:32PM (#30202092)
It is OK to use words that remind people of troubling things as long the point of using it is not to do this antagonistically.

Someone could come along and tell me my name means 'short people are possessed by demons' and I would still go on using my name, even if someone said that was mean of me. Why? Because it's a ridiculous accusation, and you are a ridiculous person if you make such an accusation, or entertain it.

Now if I started calling myself '4 foot tall demons' that would obviously be different. It is entirely implausible that the 'baggage' is coincidental.

The point is that the sort of historical baggage you are talking about isn't relevant to the word or it's usage in context.

There is nothing to excuse.

Re:Mississippi is 37th state to legalize medical marijuana on Thursday February 03, 2022 @09:43AM (#30193009)
You can buy THC gummies and THC vapes in certain Alabama gas stations now as well. I have no idea how this works legally though because it was only relatively recently legalized for medical use here. Must be something to do with some CBD-adjacent regulation that snuck in during COVID.

Re:Vice Media organised $20M Saudi government festival on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @12:56PM (#30181232)
To be fair, you could also look at this as eastern culture being a bunch of exhibits in a museum, and western culture being an active process and also the organizing principle of the exchange taking place at all.
Re:The Problem with C (2020) on Tuesday February 01, 2022 @10:52AM (#30164119)
The roots in c being a problem to me doesn't indicate the blame for them is necessarily inherited from c. The confusion about 'auto' elsewhere here is demonstrative.

C++ is superficially similar to c in a lot of ways that don't actually translate well across the boundary between the two.

So some c things get misattributed to c++ and many c++ things get misattributed to c and disentangling these is nearly impossible if you aren't intimately familiar with both of them.

Being intimately familiar with either is a detriment to maintaining unmuddled working knowledge of the other.
