But it's not really Philips anymore... It's the same with some TVs with the Grundig brand, which is also very strong. It's just some Chinese factory licensing the brand name... Grundig went bankrupt a few years ago...
Re:EU lawmakers pass strict new rules affecting big U.S. tech on Tuesday November 23, 2021 @05:40PM (#29324476)
Maybe this is a way to achieve that?

"So, for the different apps to be interoperable, no encryption is allowed"

Again, I would prefer the market to sort it out without interference from politicians.

In elementary school I remember hearing the planets move in CIRCLES in THE SAME PLANE around the Sun.

In an atom, electrons would also move around the nucleus like a mini-solar system.

For seven and eight years old children, it's a fair simplification, I guess.

Re:The myth of the driverless tube train on Wednesday June 09, 2021 @07:49AM (#27446810)
In train accidents, usually the first compositions are the most badly hit. The train driver is the most susceptible to die. You're better assisted by a remote operator...
a) Let's say you vaccinate all south-africans with AZ+Moderna+JJ+PB, then 1/4 of the population will be barely protected.

b) Let's say you vaccinate all south-africans with Moderna+JJ+PB, then all the population will be protected.

If you pay the same in both scenarios, why on earth would you choose a)?

Regarding the organic food, I wish it were that simple, but organic isn't better than conventional. It can still use pesticides, if they have a biological origin, and these are more aggressive than the synthetic ones. To feed the same population, more land use is required, thereby increasing deforestation and more carbon emissions to bring food along greater distances.
There's a TV series watchable on-line about him. Only in Portuguese, though...

Re:Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums on Wednesday February 05, 2020 @02:30PM (#22250205)
In most of Europe, the company doesn't pay anything, so it isn't tough for it. Every worker contributes a percentage for the Social Security, so basically the cost gets diluted among all tax payers.

> google will now have the DNS data

It wont necessarily be Google... From what I understood from the article, if you're currently using OpenDNS, Cloudflare DNS, etc., after the change you'll still continue to use them, only the protocol used to access them will change...

Infineon not exactly... Intel's 5G chips were being developed by the former Infineon Wireless Solutions unit, which was bought by Intel.

Re:Show HN: Automatically synchronize subtitles with video on Wednesday February 27, 2019 @11:39AM (#19264315)
I see this will only shift the timings some offset. But many times it isn't enough e.g. if the video source is NTSC and the subtitle were meant for PAL.

In this scenario I use Subtitle Workshop, which allows me to specify two (or more) pairs of times, and all subtitles are synchronized accordingly.

Optimally the two pairs of times would be near the beginning and the end, but to prevent big plot spoilers, I usually use the beginning and 2/3 of the length.

I believe this to be the biggest problem of nuclear power, not the risks of an accident. So while we have cheap energy today, the cost of containment will be paid throughout thousands of years. This doesn't make any sense from the economic perspective.
Amazing that nobody has so far mentioned "Mission Impossible Rogue Nation"! There's a scene where Benji has to pass a corridor where people are identified by the way they walk!

Although the country is nowadays irrelevant on the international arena, it's always a shame to see represented only four of the five then-big players of the colonization race, missing Portugal.

It's like a game about space exploration missing the USSR, for example...

Re:[NSFW] Salesforce fires top executives based on a joke on Friday January 05, 2018 @02:16PM (#16080843)
This is a clear example of a culture clash. Funny in Brazil, unacceptable in the US.

I'm from Europe (neutral point-of-view?) and I find it pretty funny... Nobody should have been fired.

I still believe instant.io is better, as it's P2P and uses bittorrent underneath (actually, a web version of it)...
Re:Atmospheric CO2 levels accelerate upwards on Tuesday April 11, 2017 @01:22PM (#14090245)
Most civilised countries already have a < 1 growth rate, which means they'll have populations smaller and smaller as time goes by. So if you want to decrease the global population, you'll have to target essentially Africa.

Just check the distribution of growth rates across the world:

On "Octane score" you can see the vertical axis reads 0 at the top and 40000 at the bottom, so it seems it's always "lower is better" across the three graphs, which also means Safari is the fastest browser, if you consider just these metrics. I'm actually surprised...
Re:Tesla footage of braking before crash ahead [video] on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @10:41AM (#13271160)
If it's any indication, you can read 113 km/h on the dashcam overlay. Besides, the Opel Corsa, at least for the few seconds before the crash, seems to roughly maintain the same distance from the Tesla, so it should be travelling at a very similar speed...
