Re:Why Are U.S. Transit Projects So Costly? This Group Is on the Case
on Friday November 11, 2022 @05:15PM (#33567615)
Well the people who smoke fent off of a piece of foil aren't going to disappear so you have to put them somewhere. If you were to put them somewhere in Pac Heights where the residents actively work against public transit that'd displease them, so they go where the community is less civically engaged and less powerful, like next to public transit. In effect there's a feedback loop where the area next to BART is only going to get grimier and Pac Heights are going to get NIMBYer.

Re:Python 3.11 is faster than 3.8
on Wednesday October 26, 2022 @05:02PM (#33349396)
That makes sense because pypy can JIT a ladder of if/else to a compare/jump conditional each whereas a dict lookup can be an order of magnitude more complex. If they're 8bit opcodes, maybe having a list based lookup table will perform similarly on py3000 and still optimize on pypy?
Or maybe https://docs.python.org/3/library/array.html rather than list.

on Monday October 24, 2022 @05:52PM (#33323122)
This is true, on average having an edge will be faster, but it is not a panacea for latency, especially if you don't move non-trivial QPS from every region.

on Thursday October 20, 2022 @01:55PM (#33278294)
TLDR, adding an "edge" in front of your application incurs a connection setup cost which can be 2-3x RTT and is especially noticeable when you don't have a large QPS and are in a region like APAC where geographically close networks often have high latencies between each other. Both Argo and OriginShield seem to pool more aggressively, often going cross-datacenter to avoid hitting origin which sometimes saves this setup cost by coalescing onto warm connections, but only sometimes (notice how spiky their Argo graphs are, the p90 request is probably no faster than before).

While that lasts, you can't be charging a flat $200 in a world where the other players are charging 5-10¢/GB of egress.
Re:Microsoft's AR Headset Was a Complete Disaster During a Military Test
on Saturday October 15, 2022 @01:39PM (#33216848)
It's more complicated than that though, you're interrupting a rape, in the victim's house, the perpetrator is their neighbor and they have a gun (so do you) so bloodshed is imminent if you get involved, you're the victim's significant other, but you don't care that much about them, you've been beefing with the perpetrator over who gets to store their car on the victim's lawn. The rape should stop and the perpetrator punished, but it's still not clear who gets to store their car on the victim's lawn (what you care about). You really want the victim to off their violent neighbor so you slip them an icepick and slip out the door.

Re:Apple iPhone 14 Pro Camera test
on Friday October 07, 2022 @04:33PM (#33126565)
Right, my camera even goes as far as offering in-body HDR, it's just not as good as what I get in my iPhone, especially when the scene has moving elements, the camera isn't on a tripod, etc. Phones can paper over a lot of things with "AI" which means that you can get a serviceable shot without trying, but it doesn't really correspond to reality and sometimes (especially with the moving elements case) has artifacting.

Phones outperform cameras in suboptimally lit shots. They also distort reality, hard. Good enough for IG but pretty different results otherwise.
Re:LibSQL is an open source, open contribution fork of SQLite
on Wednesday October 05, 2022 @03:56PM (#33100520)
I imagine they love the sqlite codebase but are not ecstatic about having to maintain a fork and would like to have sqlite upstream their changes such that they don't have to import patches in perpetuity. This is a valid frustration that most commonly happens with OSS that's built by a corporation and thrown over the wall. I think in this case the dig at the end of the README is a way to be like "look at those religious cult members, closed off from accepting contributions" which is a cheap shot but all's fair in politics. A lot of companies build on top Linux, PG and others and are able to reach consensus with the community.

I think making sqlite distributed-capable is very interesting. Postgres isn't trivially distributed and is a full fledged database server that's not appropriate for scale to zero workloads, though others are working on that as well.

Do know that if and when they do, they'll question your StarVPN IP. Time to pay someone you know to keep a second glinet router in their home in the state you're supposed to be in.
Re:Some WFH employees now live in another country
on Friday September 16, 2022 @05:37PM (#32872309)
Yes, the easiest way to do this is buying 2 routers that support a VPN server and a VPN client. Any OpenWRT capable router should be able to do this for you, gl-inet built a business by selling routers with custom OpenWRT-based firmware with a streamlined UI for exactly this: you log-in go to the tab for configuring the OpenVPN/Wireguard server/client and you have yourself a private tunnel.

Economies of scale will bring prices down. It's becoming clear that a combination of energy density, capacity and transport requirements are going to make hydrogen a thing for some applications. Remember that in the 90s GM was using lead acid batteries in its electric cars and the general population laughed at them.

(7e9 * 200) / (361e6 * 1e8) = 0.00003878116 decimeters of sealevel/day = basically imperceptible
Re:The end of the manual transmission is near?
on Saturday August 27, 2022 @05:42AM (#32617362)
So with the C8 and 911 they can’t be characterized as merely RWD for straight line acceleration purposes because of weight distribution. One of the biggest issues with launching is that by the time weight transfer happens tires are already spinning, so to get a good launch you want a softer suspension which would ruin the car’s performance at corner exit. Being mid or rear engined helps there because you’re starting with 55-60% of the mass over the rear wheels which is closer to AWD than RWD for launch traction.

The BMW M5 has a ZF 8HP and pulls off sub 3s 0-60s in CS trim. The new xDrive M3 comes close. I’m sure there are others. The key obviously is to have a torque converter stall speed that’s in powerband.
