Where did I 'name call' though?

Why is this acceptable to you?:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11795186

I'm not religious but this would seem to be absurdly inflammatory in normal contexts. I think that may even be illegal to put into practice.

Also why allow political stories at all if you don't want people exclusively discussing them?

Re:The Liberal Blind Spot on Sunday May 29, 2016 @01:10PM (#11797124)
The article posted is literally about ideological differences so.. what?

Also, name calling? What?

I see that the submission was removed or flagged down. I suspect that has more to do with the fact that it is critical of leftism rather than that it has nothing to do with startups or programming. This community would be much better if you just removed most of these non-programming/non-startup related submissions.

Gun control by definition affects other people.

What?

Re:The Liberal Blind Spot on Sunday May 29, 2016 @03:02AM (#11795257)
I don't know how you can look at media organizations like the New York Times and not see that they clearly have a comically overt agenda in how they talk about him and represent his positions.

> That in fact, blacks are poor because of their culture and not ongoing structural racism? I honestly feel that any worthwhile conservative arguments are being made by center-left thinkers.

What evidence do you have to suggest this is the case and that these conservative hypotheses are fairly investigated?

Sociologists are under a lot of pressure to prove leftist memes and there are many cases of fraud and very poor scientific standards.

Sociology research is effectively useless to me because of leftism. In fact, most political reporting is useless because I have to spend many more cycles tying to figure out if the person isn't just trying to virtue signal instead of be pragmatic and truthful.

> First of all, discriminating against someone because they hold intolerant beliefs is categorically different from discriminating against someone based on their religion

Religion is a set of beliefs... What?

Mainstream Islam literally calls for people to be put to death for drawing pictures of Mohammad or renouncing Islam.

> he needs to provide examples of the useful discourse we are missing out on.

Ben Shapiro is a great example.

> Frankly, the center-left vs hard-left feel like the debates we should be having as a society

No thanks, let's have a discussion about right vs left vs hard left.

Re:The Liberal Blind Spot on Sunday May 29, 2016 @02:37AM (#11795162)
Yeah I agree except for the immigration thing. That is an international affair and a matter of sovereignty and has nothing to do with personal freedoms.

Leftism currently is driving the hardest for authoritarianism. I expect we'll see something similar on the right in about a decade though I'm curious to see what it'll look like considering that it seems like religiousness is on the permanent decline in America.

Re:The Liberal Blind Spot on Sunday May 29, 2016 @02:10AM (#11795077)
The raison d'être of leftism is literally to bother other people because it gives leftists a feeling of power.
Re:The Liberal Blind Spot on Sunday May 29, 2016 @02:07AM (#11795062)
To be fair, this is mostly goalpost moving. Leftism is now mainstream liberalism.

I used to identify as a liberal but now mainstream liberalism (leftism) is against basic things like freedom of speech.

Feels weird to identify as a 'conservative' since I grew up associating very negative things with that term but there it is.

If he got this far, this guy is about 2 months away from supporting Trump.

Leftism is a religion and leftists are some of the most close-minded people you will ever meet.

None of these societal things I bring up have anything to do with the actual account of the author's fantastically awful and absurd experience with that CEO.

He clearly intended this to invoke a much wider discussion about race and system racism at the end of his essay. That's what I'm responding to.

Re:Racial Fault Lines in Silicon Valley on Wednesday May 25, 2016 @07:07PM (#11773892)
Ok, I see your point. That's fair.
Re:Racial Fault Lines in Silicon Valley on Wednesday May 25, 2016 @06:56PM (#11773829)
What would a thoughtful discussion about this particular story look like?

What you're advocating for here in terms of policing the type of discussion and the types of people that can contribute to the discussion here (based on your assumptions about their personal experiences) is incredibly Orwellian. Obviously this is a private forum and you can do whatever you want but, seriously what you're saying is a bit absurd.

Also FWIW (not much to me, but probably a lot to you) I have personally experienced racism many times in my life.

Re:Racial Fault Lines in Silicon Valley on Wednesday May 25, 2016 @06:49PM (#11773784)
And yet everyone must live in a society subject to policies that are enacted as response to racism or supposed racism.

To suggest that people should be absolutely silent and not contribute to the discourse that leads to policies that affect their lives is morally abhorrent. Ask them to weight their opinions, sure but telling them to shut up is absurd.

Re:Racial Fault Lines in Silicon Valley on Wednesday May 25, 2016 @06:43PM (#11773747)
I'm happy to have an honest and open discussion about it but that's not what most people want.

Once you start talking about systemic racism vs the rise of single-motherhood and destruction of the family and glorification of violence within the black communities you're called a racist and the discussion stops there.

There's no room for legitimate discussion and therefore nothing improves and nothing gets better, and in fact things get worse.

Please keep that crap in Europe. They're currently reaping the benefits of that particular world view.
Brevik attacked an event held by the youth movement of a far left political party in Norway so the father (who I assume is also far left) reacting/coping that way is unsurprising.

That's not something to lionize though. Pretty sad all around. There's no great wisdom there, just a leftist coping method employed by the father, similar to what a religious person would do.

There's a cost to society >$5 in value when you allow someone so fundamentally anti-social to repeatedly victimize people.

Keep in mind he was only sentenced after he was caught and the store owner pressed charges.

> Also in continental law sentences are shorter and more reasonable; 8 years for murder etc.

This may be the most European thing I've ever read.

> conservatives seem to be less prevalent online than liberals

Expressing conservative views tends to be a social liability among the groups that tend to be active internet users.

This is very interesting. Can you expand on what you mean?
Those are highly correlated issues so perhaps pick a better example?
Perhaps wealthier whites are more informed on average? Why does race or class matter?
I suppose the lizard people do in fact support Sanders and Trump.
The comparison is fundamentally flawed because the amount of jellybeans in a jar is an objective fact not subject to interpretation by anyone's values.
Thanks for conceding the argument.
The successes of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump would seem to contradict your thesis.
I strongly, strongly suspect that the primary motivation for this comes from the fact that higher voter turnout tends to favor democrats.

The probability of you getting on a nuclear weapons equipped bomber on a mission to drop a nuclear bomb is infinitesimal though I suppose it's something you may want to watch out for and report if it ever seems likely that you have stepped aboard such a plane.
You think weird behaving white men hanging around schools don't get reported?
Why do you assume this woman was bigoted and not just ignorant but acting in good faith?

She got weird vibes from him but at least tried to make conversation with the guy to get a better read on him.

The men who did 9/11 were Arab Muslims. Arab Muslims commit terrorist attacks somewhere in the world every day (though most of their victims are other Muslims). This is actually real, even though it's uncomfortable to acknowledge.

The woman was ignorant and that's on her but also a failure of public education to some extent. See something say something is an extremely valuable tool in preventing terrorist attacks so we should be more careful in considering the motivations of people who see something and say something.
