Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:38PM (#50096488)
You can, but as usual the opportunities are limited as military don’t need that much full stack engineers.

On the other hand senior embedded/mechanical/electronics/AI engineers are of the very high demand.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:32PM (#50096418)
How would you end the suffering? That is such a naive take, when there is no such option on the table.

If Ukraine lose - russians will not only he able to bomb civilians from the distance, but will literally be able to go to their homes.

The suffering will multiply but you will most likely not hear about it, so you will be in peace with yourself.

> The same can be actually said about Zelensky, for whom any concessions to Russia mean political death too. If Ukraine loses territories forever, people will ask, why so many had to die for that.

That is actually not true at all. People in Ukraine know that it is not about territory but about sovereignty.

The problem of giving up territory is that you will run out of it. The goal of Ukraine is to survive as an independent state, not to hold the ground.

That is what he loves to make, there is nothing more to it.

Re:25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @10:01AM (#49712664)
Well said, I have exactly the same thoughts.

However, overcoming these forces is something people did successfully in the past. I think right now we are just in a cycle of mass confusion caused by the technological revolutions, which prevents us to see clearly (as it happened in the past as well).

Without alignment we just drift by natural forces of a system in place in whatever direction. When we adapt and if the world survives, this should not be an issue.

The problem of billionaires is that they are one level below from the top in abstraction of a society. They are required to play by the rules of the state designed by someone else, and they lack the knowledge and experience to go one level higher and think about the policies and rules for society itself - and this is much harder than doing business, and requires completely different skills.

Because of these factors, we see them being able to hoard wealth but unable to influence the system in any positive way, except for the ones which the system was already designed for (create jobs, innovate, etc.)

Absolutely not. It would be unpleasant to a lot of people, but it would also be very far from a disaster (measured in a single low digit of GDP). In 5 years everything will return to normal.

Sanctions in the modern world don’t work. US is not the only wealthy country on the planet.

Was I the only one thinking that the author of Careless People was careless herself?

I felt that she is much closer in values to the Facebook executives than she was trying to make it seem. Yes, she failed at her job because it was an impossible one, and she got no shares because she was too late to the party, but the bravery and carelessness she showed were absolutely mind-blowing, for my taste at least.

Yes, I wonder why this is not the most obvious reason.

There are infinite ways to give away money, this scheme allows to align better with what causes other people are ready to support with their own money.

Re:Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:48PM (#49590775)
Computer files are very unintuitive concept for humans. That’s why iOS / ipadOS were trying so hard to get rid of files completely. Because any research shows that whatever your solution is - users don’t get it.

Professionals came up with their own ways navigating through that complexity.

Most people prefer the first solution there were introduced to. So people preferring Windows Explorer were using it before Finder and vice versa.

People also don’t spend time learning their tools - that’s why you see a lot of complains in this thread for things that are right in the menu, you don’t even need to read help or ask google, just open the damn menu. And this is HN - a forum for “power” users who spend immense time using their computers.

Try reducing thinking and use lighter models. For example I observed that using Sonnet works much better (compared to Opus) for tasks I want to be in control of architecture and just need a faster code input.

What does heavily encrypted even mean? Fully encrypted? Slightly encrypted? Encrypted enough to call it “heavily encrypted” but not enough to be protected from whoever is interested?
Re:Drone Autonomy Crash Course on Sunday July 05, 2026 @10:30PM (#48800056)
Not everything Ukraine uses is public knowledge.

There are huge developments in automation happening and are being used right now.

It is interesting that both options of either not using CC entirely or using CC but paying it off by the end of the month are equivalent, but you’ve somehow reframe the second ine as some virtuous skill one have to master (I’m not just buying bread, I’m also managing my finances by repaying the value of it in full by the end of the month to avoid being charged for interest and simultaneously improving my credit score).

Business model of banks in regard to CC are preying on people not paying it all in full for various reasons.

NextCloud's macOS app is implemented in a way that completely disregards any UI guidelines or just common sense for the platform.

Developers either don't use macOS at all, or don't care.

But functionally it works for our small team.

Re:The Dead Economy Theory on Friday May 29, 2026 @07:20PM (#48330665)
Yes, that is a completely new business which has OpenAI, Anthropic and Google as competitors.

While Twitters competitors were Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, Tumblr and Mastodon.

> Before the AI craze, Musk chopped an awful lot of headcount at Twitter, right, and proved it was overkill, has that panned out?

He basically killed the Twitter as a business. The only lesson here is that it is really hard to fail having infinite money.

> then there has to be something sinister afoot.

Not sinister, but just a simple strategy of a business to increase sales of his products (such as hey.com) as well as pushing his personal preferences (grok) to younger audience masquerading as being done for public good.

It is just repulsive for people who see through this. But I think it is an OK business strategy which may be somewhat successful.

Values of DHH and his businesses on one side and Linux community on the other are not very well aligned, so it will inevitably cause these kind of tensions.

But if the goal is to target younger people who are not part of Linux community yet, then it may work, and that's the play here.

Re:Shipping a Laptop to a Refugee Camp in Uganda on Saturday May 23, 2026 @11:05AM (#48248327)
Thank you for your help, I think you already know how much people in Ukraine appreciate it.

But comparing Ukraine and African countries is more like apple and oranges.

Ukraine is by large a European country which culturally is much more similar to Poland or even UK.

Because it was always portrayed in the west as corrupt or insignificant was just more caused by living under soviet or russian shadow than a reality.

Nova Poshta was already an established business well before 2022 war started, but even without it, government-owned Ukrposhta was always rock solid going decades back. Theft was happening ocasionally by workers but at a rate comparable to any other western country. DHL, FedEx was operating also for a very long time and the biggest problem with them was the need to pay the import duty tax on expensive items, which you can avoid when shipping with Ukrposhta.

Self-host your git, take this as a sign.

Forgejo is great.

Re:SpaceX wants to launch a million satellites on Sunday May 10, 2026 @08:02PM (#48089461)
Land is expensive, water is scarce, people don’t want sound pollution anywhere near them.

Building a datacenter in the neighborhood is already unpopular enough that companies do tricks to prevent public from knowing what is being built and by whom in advance.

Sending a small box with a panel to space may be a solution if a: the inside of the box is expensive and the cost to launch is cheap.

You amortize the box over 2-5 years and burn it in the atmosphere afterwards.

If the math is mathing, multiply by a million and voila, you have a datacenter in space where each rack is flying separately.

With a regular compute it may not be profitable but with GPUs connected to each other by optical links? I think it may be possible.

> Have you seen how much of a shithole France became

No, how far away should I be to see that?

This is the way, ended up using identical setup.

I am not fan of the era when CEO is expected to be a cult leader type person.

Cook did very well in all areas as well as in not trying to create a cult.
