Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @05:59PM (#49871285)
Not so bad for a single person. But once you start being an email provider, you get bad actors using your service to send spam emails. Which can cause all of your sending ips to blacklisted at once.
Looking over Journal of Cryptology, they appear to be a theory journal. So an attack on an implementation, based on hardware probably doesn't interest them as much.
Re:AI in mathematics is forcing big questions on Friday June 26, 2026 @11:12PM (#48694776)
In 2012 Mochizuki claimed to have proved the abc conjecture by developing a new branch of mathematics. He was a respected mathematician, but the theories he had developed were so complex no one could determine if he was correct. It took six years until two number theorists dissected the proof and found a fatal flaw in it.
Investigation isn’t finished, but it was almost certainly the US. If it was Iran Trump or Hegeseth would not have been able to contain themselves.

And Python is four years older than Java.
I feel like this argument would make a lot more sense if LLMs had anywhere near the same level of determinism as a compiler.
You do realize peer reviewers are also unpaid.
The gpt4 model was able to draw a unicorn and given a program that drew a unicorn, modify it so the unicorn was rotated 90 degrees.

Re:Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco on Tuesday June 25, 2024 @10:24PM (#40795824)
Taxis have basically no recourse if you just ditch. Waymo has a video of you, your full name, your billing address and your credit card on file.
The page you linked on gulf war syndrome talks about how it's a real condition and not psychosomatic.
Quantum computers are still not useful, fwiw.
Re:HubSpot Acquires Clearbit on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @12:33PM (#38100748)
I don't think this is correct. Meta and Google don't sell direct access to your data. They sell advertising targeting you, based on your personal data.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell users email address to a data broker under GDPR.

Re:Tech jobs market normalizing as July unemployment dips on Tuesday August 22, 2023 @06:11PM (#37229238)
Stock grants are typically vested quarterly, sometimes after an initial waiting period of 1-2 years. RSUs are just cash, I don’t see how they would not be considered being paid. They certainly show up on my W2.
Re:A Room-Temperature Superconductor? New Developments on Tuesday August 01, 2023 @01:22PM (#36959171)
So they planted this with a Korean lab a few years ago?
Re:Room Temperature Superconductor Drama and Hope on Sunday July 30, 2023 @02:29AM (#36928451)
Very different than the six years it took before the mathematics community found a flaw in Mochizuki‘a abc conjecture proof.
Re:Metformin shown to prevent long Covid on Friday June 16, 2023 @03:26PM (#36362438)
It's not the first evidence of treatment and preventing isn't the same as treating, because it does nothing for people who have the disease.
Re:Metformin shown to prevent long Covid on Friday June 16, 2023 @09:49AM (#36356559)
Triple therapy is a treatment that proceeds it. Metformin isn’t a treatment, it’s a prophylactic.
Re:Metformin shown to prevent long Covid on Friday June 16, 2023 @03:22AM (#36352731)
You’re not paying attention if you think this is the first evidence of long covid. There’s been significant strides towards understanding long covid in terms of microclots and viral persistence.

https://cardiab.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12933-02...

For this pathology long covid can be treated with so called triple therapy for instance

https://medhelpclinics.com/uploads/files/anticoagulant-tripl...

Long covid is very real and is not anxiety. There have been studies linking post covid fatigue and conditions to viral persistence and micro clotting. This type of post covid is just anxiety discourse is incredibly harmful.
It’s interesting that we view the fact that it makes mistakes as evidence it’s not intelligent. By this metric then, humans are also not intelligent.
NPR continuing to publish programming critical of Trump during the Trump presidency, is a pretty strong indication they have editorial independence.
Re:How does database sharding work? on Friday April 07, 2023 @10:43AM (#35482063)
> My intuition is that a properly sharded database will perform faster-or-same as a non-sharded one in all scenarios.

This is workload dependent, if your queries only go to one shard, this is likely true. But if you have cross shard queries, then it’s no longer true.

Did anyone commenting read the article? The author was a meditation teacher who had been meditating for over 10 years, when he had this experience.
She got pregnant as she was awaiting trial.
I wonder by what metric this is true. For instance, I’m sure the fatality per flight of manned space flight is an order of magnitude worse than commercial air flight in the US.
There isn’t really a diagnostic test for long covid. There’s been some interesting research and anecdotes around microclots and oxygen flow.

Re:GPT Takes the Bar Exam on Monday January 09, 2023 @04:37AM (#34308495)
I don’t really know to what extent AI is going to take over. But crypto is a Terri comparison, it didn’t really solve any problems. There’s nothing you can do with a blockchain that’s you couldn’t already do before.

The potential with Chatgpt if it can be refined is wild.

There have been people floating these ideas for decades. It’s not catching on now.

Re:Ask HN: Is Programming Culture Immature? on Sunday January 01, 2023 @01:47PM (#34209342)
It’s all about risk profiles. The failure of a bridge or an airplane is catastrophic and people will die. If a SaaS provider is down for awhile, people are frustrated.
