All these marketing facts and figures sound great. Nits and contrast ratio and True Tone. The blackest blacks. All great.

Those greasy finger marks are really going to dazzle like never before.

I can’t be the only one who recoils in horror at the thought of TOUCHING THE SCREEN! It’s like going to the toilet and not washing your hands after. I’m sure people do it, but..ew.
Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:39PM (#50097645)
Took me a little while to figure out this was a llm harness for coding (also called an agent, I suppose, but that term seems overloaded and ambiguous to me)

There are many of these available, alongside the provider ones.

Are there any benchmarks which help me decide which ones I should try over the standard codex/claude?

Re:OpenAI, the Partition Principle, and Mathematics on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:52AM (#50017853)
Here’s an idea I would love to see play out. Have one of the labs train a new model, using cutting edge architecture, on a whole lot of data and math papers from before 1905. Then see if it can come up with, or even understand, Einsteins theory of relativity.
Re:What About Rails? on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:16AM (#49844229)
UIs are great, until you can’t see the UI.

Words are a great UI. They can be easily converted into audio and haptics. We already have many systems in place that do exactly this with words.

Sure, pretty graphics are nice, but their sole intent should be to convey information. A User Interface that does not allow a person to easily have information conveyed to them is a bad interface.

The modern AI world isn’t perfect, but for a large portion of people who have accessibility needs, it’s absolutely a positive impact on their life in a way that no single technology has been until now.

Surely someone instructed the agent, which led to the reported outcomes. Even indirectly. The agents, as advanced as they are, didn’t spring forth under its own volition.

I came to say the same thing. Zero info about how I would use this once it’s cloned.
Re:Claude Opus 5.5 on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:07PM (#49808868)
How do you update Claude Code to enable this? It’s listed under models, but says I have to update for 5.5. I run Claude update and it says I’m on the latest version.

Infuriating.

This is simple marketing?

If I’m understanding correctly, this will work well for self driving cars?
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @01:02AM (#49605752)
I love jellyfin, been using it for years now, alongside the *ARR stack.

My young daughter recently started getting into audio books, so I installed Listenarr alongside a vibe coded mcp server [0] which I have running with all the other arr service mcp connections.

This allows the family to easily download and manage their media (err…Linux distributions) via Onyx AI, which I also have running with everything else on local box running microK8s, all on a relatively puny Geekom minipc with 16Gb

This whole setup is pretty straightforward to manage with Claude which has no issues working with K8s.

Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Monday September 07, 2026 @09:36PM (#49604742)
I guess this is unavoidable on today’s internet, but…reading a story that decries the (admittedly really bad) data gathering techniques of an advertiser, from a site that itself is plastered with adverts…I don’t know the right word here, but it feels a bit shit.

Although I’m glad this is getting the visibility it deserves. I hope this hurts LG where it matters and sends a signal to other manufacturers, but I doubt it.

Re:Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:28AM (#49595079)
I really appreciate this info. I went old school when I hacked my own esp32 bikeputer together with a wheel magnet and reed switch. It was fun to put together, but pretty janky with wires tapped up and it wouldn’t survive any off-roading.

I wasn’t aware of the more modern ANT+ approach. Looking forward to a V2.

There’s no mention of the wheel sensor. How does it get the bike telemetry?

My mums German potato salad disagrees

Re:Salad Theory on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @04:04AM (#49533252)
Or maybe you have a cold sauce?!

You also have soups in cups. Is a gazpacho soup in a cup still a soup? Technically tomato is a fruit, so you got a cold blended fruit sauce in a cup, which to me is a smoothie.

And let’s not get started on cocktails, like the Bloody Mary. That’s just another smoothie.

Re:Salad Theory on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @03:41AM (#49533060)
This also got me thinking.

When does a soup become a smoothie (or vice versa)?

Re:Atlas: A World Model for Spatial Intelligence on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @08:00PM (#49530019)
How long does it take to process from input images to model output?
I’d be interested in a different question. Do those who think Scratch is a bad starting language for kids have kids?

The benefit of kids learning coding isn’t the language or system. It’s about them learning abstract thought and problem solving. It also introduces them to the concepts of variables, loops, etc. If you can do that in an engaging and enjoyable way you’ve won half the battle already.

When I finally agree to cave in and buy a phone for my soon-to-be teenager, little does she know this is the phone I have in mind…
I feel seen. I find this happening about 70% of the time now. Maybe 50% of that 70% it takes a few paragraphs where my brain is squinting at something not feeling quite right before I hit the slop line, then I feel stupid for not picking it up sooner.

Give me back the days of rage bait about people’s tech preferences. At least there were opinions and beliefs being laid bare for all to see in their naked, yet occasionally dumb, beauty.

Now we don’t even get opinions or dumbness to read. It’s like humanities personalities have been Gaussian blurred to a point where I can kinda understand what’s being said, but without the richness and detail.

Re:Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:24AM (#49476690)
Would this model be available in ComfyUI, or does Google limit these to their own tools?
Give it a go, they’ll soon let you know.

My daughter first watched HA when she was around 8. It’s one of her favourite movies. She generally doesn’t like movies or even cartoons, something about the tension they build. But HA she loves.

Re:Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with? on Friday August 14, 2026 @06:17PM (#49305281)
My biggest pet pieve isn’t the LLM-isms themselves, but people who aren’t aware of them releasing documentation that’s clearly AI generated and being indignant when I ask “is this AI generated”
LLMs have provided the uncanny valley to writing.
Also built a bike computer for my daughter using an esp32, reed switch and magnet.

As we had recently watched Back To The Future, when she reached 8.8 mph it would play a brief snippet of appropriate music!

Re:Battle of the Beams on Monday August 03, 2026 @08:48PM (#49163174)
My thanks to you @kreelman.

I have not seen these documentaries before. Indeed I had not seen video footage of RV Jones before. As a lifelong hero of mine, I’m looking forward to watching these in their entirety.

I’m currently in the process of reading Churchills autobiographies. While quite heavy, he writes with such clarity and knowledge. It’s a great account of how WW2 came about, and articulates how easily it could have been avoided if only a few people in positions of power had made different choices.

How different our world and technology could be if not for those terrible circumstances of war.

For those interested in this topic I can’t recommend the following book enough.

https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/1127842.Most_Secret_W...

Many of the overarching themes and challenges of dealing with technical problems where you have incomplete information will be familiar to many here.

According to the publications section of his Wikipedia, the book is available for free on archive.org. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Victor_Jones

> it's completely unlocked new ways of building software for the web, especially if you use a server-side templating language.

Could you please expand on this point. As a “greybeard” web dev from the 2000’s era, I’d like to understand if your “unlocking” is my “that’s how it originally worked, get of my lawn”?
