Re:The brain isn’t supposed to change this much on Thursday June 10, 2021 @04:14AM (#27458253)
Also, how can it be surprising that a brain-related phenomenon is not well understood?

I mean, I can think of a few brain-related questions with no good answers:

- What is consciousness and how does a brain become conscious?

- How and why is one specific consciousness attached to one specific brain (& body)? Why am I controlling my body and not yours?

This should get more attention (& upvotes).
Re:Github1s – One second to read GitHub code with VS Code on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @03:05AM (#26086661)
So surely, it will never make money. :(
No. I created an app in one of these (a year ago). I have 5 serious competitors. Each are decent apps that have been in the game longer than mine - mine is not necessarily better, just with a slightly different angle.

It has about $3.5k MRR, is still growing and I spend maybe 5-10 hours a month on it.

Also, I had no brand before that.

Re:How to leave Google and why on Tuesday January 19, 2021 @09:22AM (#25833619)
> "the value I get out is worth more than the data I put in". And that's a perfectly valid view.

Sure. But that is only a valid view if the seller of services is transparent about the price.

Currently, I have absolutely no idea what I am paying to use Google.

One thing that bothers me: Why is "No GitHub" wrong?

I have absolutely nothing on a public GitHub. Does that make me a worse software engineer?

Dane here. Also never heard of this.

People often bring cake to work on birthdays, though.

Re:We can have democracy or we can have Facebook on Friday December 11, 2020 @08:19AM (#25385382)
The difference is in Facebook amplifying the content's reach just because it is controversial and generates interactions.

Most serious media outlets care about the truth of the content they share. Facebook simply does not.

I also thought this was already general consensus. I.e. that face masks are used to prevent you from spreading disease, if you are infected but without symptoms.

Fine - but what do I say instead then?

It sounds like vaporware.
Re:French fathers will now get 28 days of paternity leave on Monday September 28, 2020 @06:11AM (#24615002)
In Denmark you are not entitled to a full salary during your leave. You are entitled to around 2k€ per month from the government (if you qualify).

However, it is a quite common employee benefit, that the employer pays full salary for part of or for the entire parental leave. The employer is then reimbursed from the government for the first 2k€ every month.

Nothing prevents you from quitting when you get back from parental leave. Except that you probably already have a lot on your mind with a little child - why add the extra pressure of switching jobs?

Re:French fathers will now get 28 days of paternity leave on Monday September 28, 2020 @05:57AM (#24614926)
In Denmark we also only have two weeks paternity leave. But then between 7-12 months to split between mother and father. However, the most common (in my experience) is that the mother uses the full leave.
Re:I overslept because iOS 14 disabled my alarm on Thursday September 17, 2020 @06:55AM (#24503107)
I simply stopped using the wake-up alarm function due to this. Never figured out how to make it work again.
Are $500k+ yearly salaries in SV really that usual?
Re:Unit Testing Is Overrated on Thursday July 09, 2020 @09:01AM (#23779699)
I don't think OP is step 1. OP is not arguing against testing, although the title could lead one into thinking that. OP is arguing for better, more reasonable testing.
Re:Unit Testing Is Overrated on Thursday July 09, 2020 @08:56AM (#23779661)
Your points are fine, but I do not see how they apply to the blog post.

Overall, the blog post says, unit tests take a long time to write compared to the value they bring - instead (or also) focus on more valuable automated integration tests / e2e tests because it is much easier than it was 10-20 years ago.

Re:Unit Testing Is Overrated on Thursday July 09, 2020 @08:53AM (#23779635)
Same point being made in the blog post. I do recommend others to read the post though - good stuff.
Went in here to say exactly that.
I have another one. "b.dk" turns into "eb.dk".

Two different Danish newspapers. Can't be true I can only use one of them :)

Clever domain!
It matters because they need to make it very explicit to newcomers that this is not your normal inbox.

I think they should create a way to rename the Imbox though, so that when people get it, they don't have to look at the weird "typo" anymore.

Re:Apollo – Funding for Moonshots on Thursday June 18, 2020 @05:18AM (#23561313)
Guessing a lack of good results :)
tldr: Twitter offered $10 million for startup with CEO and co-foundes. CEO would rather work at Facebook without co-founders. Company sold for $5 million.
I choose to trust MS are using the telemetry for improving VS Code, which I genuinely love, and accept the "risk" that MS somehow abuses the telemetry. I see this risk way lower than e.g. Google or Facebook abusing data they can collect about me.
RIP Mark Zuckerberg.
Probably. Would it hurt Star Wars?
Re:Build stuff on Friday March 20, 2020 @10:56AM (#22638002)
The "simple group projects" we made during my 5-year degree were the result of 3-5 people putting in ~200 hours each (over 4 months). They were of higher quality, better designed, tested and documented than most I have encountered in the industry now 5 years later.

I would not say that I am much better technically now, than I was 5 years ago. Much of what I have learnt in the industry is about coping with working in an office, having pointless meetings, doing design by committee, etc.

And your last line probably gave you lots of flags. Not sure I particularly like this forum anymore.
