aaron also did the Deity3D engine for palmos that was a FPS doom-like. I think the engine was later used for Master Thief 3D which was an incredible game for PalmOS.
Aaron was/is quite the coder. I used to belong to a group he was in as well. Learned a lot. Also took it as a challenge to crack his palm programs :) and he learned techniques to thwart us lol.
Fun guy.
If it wasnt some mostly custom system it was probably an HP 64000 Logic Development System. Which used Z80s to run user facing software and control the actual mainframe. I doubt it was a pure Z80 "mainframe". Loved to be proved wrong though!
I love this sort of content! My favorite things I find on HN :D
He said "offline" not "no power".
Also, fuel station can probably successfully run it's own backup power;)
They need to be heavily penalized
And replaced it with utter bullshit.
I HATE the "Settings" crap. It's horrible. Fucking mess find anything. Half the functionality of the control panel applets are still not implemented. You essentially can't do more than one settings task at a time.
I seriously want to stab whoever thought this was a good idea on the face.
I still have a system running a modded xeon in a 775 board lol
Sadly I'm in that position. I have hundreds of PLCs and legacy controllers on my network that are IPv4 only and will never be replaced. At least not in a reasonable time frame. I'm talking 20+ year life expectancies.
Exactly. The Pi is useful for some stuff if.you need a lot of GPIO or legacy hat support etc. or just hate x86 for some bizarre reason. Otherwise I can see literally no benefit to a Pi over an N95 or Nx00 box. I using them all over the place and have been rock solid. And you can get them with multiple nvme sockets, sata, etc.
The Pi obsession truly boggles my mind. I can see it with the RP2040 etc but a regular Pi? Why?
Yeah but that is the extreme minority. Claiming it isnt is absurd.
god I miss my NeXT hardware. I used one as a daily driver till ~2008ish. sniff Shouldn't have sold it.
GOOD. There shouldn't even be a question about this. I have family members who would have died if the current state of abortion bullshit in the US had been a thing.
All these fucks voting out protections THEY ENJOYED their entire reproductive lives is so damn infuriating.
I am IT at a factory and we use several temp agencies and this is literally how we handle it lol. Surprise they show. Full time hire by 3 months.
This line of logic is more frightening to me than actual AI. LLMs are really useful in a lot of scenarios but it takes 5 minutes playing with one to see that it isn't intelligent.
But since you are the type of person who is seemingly using LLM "written" code in production, your ability to accurate assess anything is suspect at best.
"Any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic".
No, an LLM is not intelligent. I do not understand why people will go through mental gymnastics to conclude they are.
queue all the typical arguments supporting them being intelligent and demanding I give reasons for them not being
Oh! I would like to know what sort of reliability and headaches they had out of different types of memory! Drum, core, film memory etc.
Oh wow. The Goodyear Plant must be the one in Gadsden AL which is my home town.
I would love to hear what they think of the advances in technology from when they started till now; on the software side: which machine series they liked dealing with the /least/ and wich the most and why. What operating systems they liked the most.
Any fun anecdotes about user issues, idiotic design quirks they dealt with etc.
Also, if they have any old ephemeral like notebooks, manuals, etc? That sort of thing would be a treasure to scan in and send to archive.org and bitsavers!
The fact companies in the US have "personhood" is a huge fucking problem with this damn country.
That's not entirely true and deoends heavily on the phone.
Depends. The DNG/Raw photos you can force out of gcam will sorta have the noise. Less processing /sorta/. HDR+ with gcam is going to be exceptionally "touched" no matter what.
You can modify the camera drivers etc on some devices to get nearly no processing output (other than the debayering color filtering etc by the ISP). I custom modded an LG V20 that I use for my mobile photography. I've either totally disabled or adjusted nearly every function of the signal processor as well as modified the camera program itself. I also use a custom modified gcam on it.

Look at my user (helforama) on imgur and pretty much every uploaded photo I took and edited on my V20... I need to update that account with newer photos :) been using the phone aince 2016 for photos!
Iirc the chevy volt only lets you use around 60% of the battery pack under normal conditions.
Love my volt. 104K miles, 10 years old, no signs of battery performance degredation yet.
My last volt had 156k and same age and same performance (got totalled :( )
I adore Sumatra. I have used it for decades. Used to run it on my Windows 95 laptop even :) Super fast. Just. Works. Rarely have any issues with it.
... which means literally decades of development tools and support.
Amazes me how techies jump on whatever hotness bandwagons without a second thought.
I do not like the crease and the larger foldables do not entice me bit I got work to let me get a zflip4 as a replacement and I have liked it way more than I expected.
It is a good form factor. Fits in my work shirt pocket.
I do industrial IT and a metal working factory and it has survived that environment with any complaints for a year now.
This sounds like a great listen. Thanks for mentioning it
Just wanted to say that I love your content and look forward to new stuff. Thanks so much for putting the effort forward that you do! I’ve learned tons of the years following you :) greatly appreciate it.
I can understand if you already have a Tesla. What blows my mind are the people continuing to buy new ones.
I’m loving my A770. Absolutely zero issues with it and it’s handling raytracing and all with aplomb.
I do not understand the appeal of cheating in MP games. What is the point of being invincible in a FPS or unlimited gold in something else etc? It takes all the effort and skill out of it. It's like it's a buncha 12yos who cant stand "to lose".
