Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:28PM (#50280420)
I got a nice case of emacs pinky back in my early 30's. Had to take disability, get physical therapy to rehabilitate, etc. Been vi all the way since then.
yes and I'd like to sue whoever named that field for false advertising. when I went to school (Precambrian era - no internet) I thought computer science would be great because I wanted to learn how to program. I dropped it after the 2nd year when I realized it was more about calculus than programming. (and I sucked at calculus. well, the teachers who were supposed to teach me about calculus sucked, but the end result was the same.)
I've been telling everyone who will listen for the last few months that this is the inevitable end point of software development.
Have you ever done any mindfulness meditation? I hit on a similar idea while meditating. My analogy is the brain is like the full spectrum of radio frequencies, but there's a "main station" that is "I". From time to time you lose that signal and tune into something else. And just because you're not listening to it, it doesn't mean the other stations aren't still broadcasting.

I have no idea if there's a biological origin for any of this, but it definitely fits with my experience of meditation and awareness training.

There are myriad 3rd party camera apps that will give you RAWs straight off the sensor. Apple also has its "ProRAW" format which is a nice middle ground.
Re:iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on Monday September 14, 2026 @08:34PM (#49706180)
It couldn't hurt. I don't have problems like that.

mdutil -E -a

That command will erase and rebuild Spotlight index on all volumes.

Since Tahoe, Spotlight has multiple modes. You might have better luck forcing it into folder & files mode. That's command-2. So command-space, spotlight UI appears, keep holding command key, press 2. There's also 1 for applications only, 3 for "actions" and 4 for clipboard history.

That's a bizarre analogy. If you're actually committed to learning (vs having the LLM spit out code you don't read), using an LLM as a teacher is more like working out using weight machines vs dumbbells. Just two different methods of arriving at the same destination, with different pros and cons.
I love it! I write my own services for it all the time. You can assign global hotkeys to them as well which makes it crazy convenient to be able to select text, a file, etc and invoke some script you wrote on them.

an analogy is like a garden shed: you try to eat it, it'll get stuck in your throat.

Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @06:24PM (#49103877)
There were full-length NBA Lakers games in the Vision Pro headset earlier this year. I watched a few - super cool. They even had a separate announcer just for the immersive broadcast.
Re:Simulate cassette tape audio profiles using FFmpeg on Sunday July 26, 2026 @09:45PM (#49064291)
Most commercial DAWs come with such algorithms already. (eg Logic Pro has "ChromaGlow" which can emulate tape, tubes, etc. https://support.apple.com/guide/logicpro/chromaglow-controls...)

There's also a thriving 3rd party plugin market for similar effects.

This is my go to for making things sound "worse" :)

Sorry you went through that. I've been on the other side of it. I had interviewed a bunch of people, found a good candidate, had an offer ready to go. It was pulled at the last second by higher ups who decided they needed the headcount more than my department did. It sucks for everybody.

Just another Monday in 2026.

Assuming you're not joking, that's the point of the podcast... hence the title "If Books Could Kill". They're reviewing bad and possibly dangerous books.

The weird thing is that setting used to be in the trackpad settings! I have no idea why they moved it. It's one of the first things I enable on every device I use.
Re:Code is run more than read on Saturday December 02, 2023 @12:30PM (#38500186)
the explanation is simple - the immutable law of resource allocation:

"good, fast, cheap: pick two"

lifestyle creep. living in the bay area, kid or two in private school, driving a tesla... $270k doesn't go that far.
You can go to iCloud.com in any web browser.

Re:The Sorry State of Native App Typography Licensing on Thursday December 20, 2012 @12:34PM (#4948840)
I just went through this exact situation a few days ago. The designer of the app chose Avenir, which is included in iOS 6 but is not part of Android, so I reached out to Linotype to find out how to license it for an Android app. The responses were confusing and inexact (and slow - apparently they only have sales staff in Germany, and I'm in California, so the time difference means every go round takes a whole day). After 2-3 email exchanges I gave up trying to get a coherent answer and we're using a bundled-with-Android font. Oh well!
