Wants to know what year the $3.5-4k estimate is for. My m4 max was $4k but sure can’t buy anything like that for $4k now.

Re:The new iPad mini on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:18AM (#50254979)
Well this is great news for ereaders. Guess I’m upgrading my kindle now
However, my ability to produce a lot of really useful software for myself has gone way up. None of them are over a year yet but I use them more than the non personalized apps they replaced
The real magic of this thread is I wrote a script to download all of these fonts, then open each one in my editor so I can see each one in the wild. This is a really great exercise, thanks for opening up my eyes to bitmap fonts which I didn't know about.
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:22AM (#50087362)
20/100 times, it ships faster than it estimates
Re:WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement on Saturday October 10, 2026 @11:26PM (#50039571)
https://github.com/wasi-master/13ft is already open sourced
Public IP because I’m on cell home Internet. It started for hosting “Linux isos” but has morphed into dozen or so hobby projects. Tailscale >>> wireguard. I have no idea why my usage is still free. I use it a lot
I know 10 year olds already doing this. It’s great. Remove the barrier to imagining your own games !
It’s actually quite easy there. You work a couple of days a month and there are gyms for working out everywhere. I’d probably trade that for the power issues once a decade.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:12AM (#49626954)
Interviews require you to code without any LLM help. 9/10 require this still. Once inside, I don’t think they write any code themselves.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:11AM (#49626937)
Being unwilling to change or changing too much are both equally going to get you fired. I’m the later so I feel your pain. At companies you have to turn your brain off and bahhh with the sheep.
Re:Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone on Saturday September 05, 2026 @09:32PM (#49582493)
Yep, tailscale, sync things. Glued together a lot of services
Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @06:41PM (#49441681)
M4 Max Studio + Macbook Air. I've been running this for several years. Mac is a really poor server environment and none of the apple ecosystem makes up for it. So, I still prefer my linux server, but the M4 Max is much more suited for inference tasks so here it is. I wouldn't say it's much better than a MBP except the sustained throughput is much higher and the fan noise is barely noticeable. I'd get a linux equivalent if there was one.
Re:Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative on Monday August 17, 2026 @05:27PM (#49337881)
Git can be hosted over ssh or filesystem. I moved to self hosting git. Now it’s always up, go figure!
No Claude code support, useless feature. I’ll just biometric with op
Unless you’re running multiple home servers, I can not reason any reason to use k8s. I’ll push any business to k8s but I would never bother with 1-3 home labs. Surprised this is even a hacker news topic of interest.
lol, why even use Claude desktop? I want Claude code to stop eating up 10s of gb of virtual memory
Re:Migrating from Go to Rust on Sunday May 24, 2026 @10:26PM (#48262882)
Not sure the article is … accurate? Go has a large standard library. Rust leans on third party cargo libraries which fall into the supply chain attack and has a small standard library. Anyways, that feels immediately biased in the article. Also 11% use Rust? I don’t see that penetration in real long term products. Sure lots of tui apps these days but not things that you can make money working on.
Wow the UI looks exactly what I vibe coded yesterday. What a coincidence
Re:Why TUIs Are Back on Monday May 04, 2026 @01:21AM (#48004936)
Some of us never switched to gui. Who wants to stop working to move a mouse around?
I use Claude code hooks to prompt and store memories. It’s taken a lot of iterations mostly on the definition of “significant” events being stored in memory. Indeed, it works very well now but I’m hesitant to start from scratch on some guys tool. I think demos are going to need reviews here on out. Vibe coded projects look too legit but it’s a waste of time to test the 100 that come out each day
It’s an idea that obfuscates keys a bit, but how are you going to prevent the agent from gaining access to the vault and keys itself? I’ve seen it reverse engineer many things to expose the underlying credentials. I can only think running this on a firewall that the agent can’t access to prevent escalation.
It’s painful but this is the way. Especially if your team is slow at merging.
Pass, one commit, no way to evaluate the evolution of the codebase.
Re:Stop Putting Secrets in .env Files on Friday February 27, 2026 @11:54PM (#47190621)
People still code on their local boxes? op is not biometric secured over an ssh tunnel
You're describing the fake breakup. Where you tell your girlfriend/boyfriend you want a break, then let them talk you back into the relationship. This is just a bad relationship move. Now they don't trust you and you have a needy or untrusting partner now.

I've had 50% pay raises that were nearly matched by the current employer. My last manager literally said the words, "What if we offered you a big bag of money to stay?". I left.

Now I work at a place where people stay literally until the die, 10, 15, 25 year tenures. My coworkers are mediocre. I'd say it's a mixture of laziness and sometimes maybe just incompetence.

It's a two fold problem. Employees that stay this long do not progress in their careers or learn new skills. I've learned next to nothing in my 5 years here. Employers that don't create churn in their workers create numerous problems. If we didn't hold a monopoly in our field, I'm sure we would have been bought out and had mass layoffs by now.

Re:Apple Shuts Down “My Photo Stream” on Wednesday June 28, 2023 @01:51PM (#36510032)
Free way to share photos across all your devices. Super great feature when I tuned off iCloud Photos due to costs. I’ll miss it, this won’t push me to shell out for iCloud storage though.
The problem with art is good provenance. NFTs specifically solves this issue. Provenance was a common word used by art collectors describing the issues with Art auctions during NFT.NYC. Noah Davis really opened my eyes to this topic, here's his speech at NFT.NYC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeVZeXsRKhs

It would take a while to explain provenance in crypto space. It's largely based on credibility and ownership of addresses. Once credibility and address is established, it is a simple operation to prove the Bridge picture came from a specific artist. Things like ENS (Ethereum Name Service) are examples of deep support for provenance in Crypto.

Re:PayPal shuts down long-time Tor supporter on Thursday June 03, 2021 @11:50PM (#27390363)
Man discovers banking system is centralized and prone to corruption? Shocker! Why do you think crypto tokens are skyrocketing in value?
