I'm seeing quite a few recommendations for good shows in the comments, under an article about GITS and Mamoru Oshii, but surprisingly no one has brought up the two other fairly well-known (?) works: Angel's Egg and Urusei Yatsura 2. The first one just got the news about a 4k upgrade next year and first time Western release, while the other has few reasons to be a stand-alone movie of the same manga besides the main cast. Both are sometimes incredibly trippy and heady with the hypnotic 90s look, which seem to be much fewer in the modern anime but I haven't really kept up with new stuff these days as well as animation styles certainly evolve over time.

From the ToC, is the any reason there is no chapter covering probability/statistics? It has chapters for single/multivariable calculus and linear algebra, and all CS programs I know have all three, especially when there are some nice connections between them, not to mention how useful they are in other CS/engineering subjects.

Just my opinion, but I think the elements of culture and language play no small roles in such kind of translation. My country (Vietnam) is heavily influenced by Chinese, and even that if you use normal vocabularies for literal translation like "18 palms of the Golden Dragon", it still sounds super corny, yet switching to Sino-Vietnamese style automatically makes it 10 times more awesome and elegant. And this expands to other subjective points such as characters, thematic plots, etc...; thus I feel it probably is way harder for Western audience to agree with the comparison with Tolkien.

I share the same sentiment. Still looking for the holy grail but the best lead so far is using the combination of Bazel (excellent dependencies support), its rule for wrapping around good templating solutions (jsonnet, ksonnet, etc.) ; and some backend that integrates with infrastructure tooling to generate configurations to fetch into bazel.
