Re:AI is destroying my CS degree on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @11:38AM (#50354232)
I would argue the job thing is more at risk and opportunity for learning is at an all time high. You've got 24/7 access to a very skilled personal tutor.

AI can teach you, you just have to put the effort in to tell it to teach you. In some contexts, I might want it to fire off a utility bash script and I have no interest in learning bash so I just run it and don't worry too much about the implementation. But if I'm getting it to help me write Java code for work, I review the output and ask it about parts that I don't understand. And it teaches me way better than the old way of reading dry/bad documentation.

It's what you make of it.

Re:My Favourite Laptop on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:42PM (#50342540)
Me too, base model M1 Pro from 2021 still runs like a dream.

I feel like I'm only gonna get pushed off this thing from software support being dropped.

Re:After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:52PM (#50294835)
I wonder how his now 36-year-old son who was 8 when his father left to do this for no reason feels about it.

Does doing a lot of walking make it acceptable to leave your young kid and go globetrotting for 30 years?

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:16PM (#50278413)
Casual users should not be buying the most expensive MacBook Pro unless they have so much money that $3000 (or more) means little to them.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:55PM (#50277997)
Windows benefits from a touchscreen more often on something like a diagram where you'll be panning around up/down/left/right, zooming, etc because the trackpad situation isn't very good.

I've never felt the need for a touchscreen when e.g. using Miro because I can scroll and all directions and zoom intuitively on the Mac's trackpad.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:42PM (#50265507)
MacRumors is still claiming we're getting a new chassis

> Apple on Wednesday will announce 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring touch-enabled OLED displays with thinner bezels, a Dynamic Island instead of a notch, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and a lighter and slightly thinner design

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:56PM (#50264879)
Why are we comparing the M6 to the M5 Max?

What was the speed of the base M5?

Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:22PM (#50264388)
But the iMacs only have the sans-adjective M-series processors. And is it really gonna have optimal thermals in that thin frame pressed against a big, bright high-res screen?

If you need to push performance you'd probably go for a Mac Studio, no? Or at least a Mini.

Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:30AM (#50260840)
The modern iMac is the dream desktop that I'm sure Jobs would have loved to live to see, but Apple's laptops have gotten so good there's practically no reason to buy a computer from them that you can't take on the go.

It only makes sense for niche use cases, like your grandpa who is happy to have a single spot in his home for the computer, or a reception desk at a business, etc.

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:14PM (#50249410)
Memory and storage is expensive as hell, so they're gonna ration it for their more expensive devices.

Same reason this year, for the first time ever, Apple announced their new Pro phones (and the ultra-expensive Duo) but no base-model iPhone 18. They're paying more for memory so they're gonna use it on the devices where they make more on a sale.

I also believe the Twitter exodus exposed the software engineering headcount sham for what it is. Something like 80% of the company left or was let go, and despite all the smug laughing about how the platform would go under within weeks, it just kept on going.
> Introducing a Voluntary Exit Offer

Headline is making me laugh cause it sounds like a press announcement for a new product

"The new Microsoft Voluntary Exit Offer, thinner, and lighter, with 20% slimmer bezels than before"

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:19PM (#50246374)
Just because it's good doesn't mean it can't be better

The novelty of how thin my M5 iPad Pro is still hasn't worn off. Sometimes it's just nice to hold some tech in your hand that feels like it's from the future.

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:14PM (#50246282)
The iPad mini is not a mini version of the base model iPad. It's more or less a scaled down iPad Air.
Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:55AM (#50244831)
If you needed a mini tablet you would cause there's practically zero competition

I bought the new 8 inch Alexa tablet the other day, and the price was decent but it's a piece of shit. I only wanted it for putting on a video in bed while I fall asleep but it can't even do that because when you drop the brightness to minimum, the display randomly turns off (not actually locking the screen, it's still running the app and active, you can touch stuff you can't see, but the pixels are turned off)

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:53AM (#50244802)
Starting at $949 before tax (~$1050 after tax in most provinces) in Canada for 128GB

Zoinks

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:47AM (#50244681)
The non-Pro iPhone 17 has ProMotion. I have to assume it's a matter of time before it'll make its way to the non-Pro iPads.
This is a really cool idea but my entire city is mostly articles for regional districts and schools. I also found an article on the casino and the refinery on the edge of town.
Not to mention you have a level 5 pikachu and are expected to defeat a level 100 mewtwo that one-shots you.
These scams regularly go on for days anyway. Now the scammer just gets them to install it and says "we'll call you back tomorrow to finish getting rid of the viruses"

> You can disagree with the tradeoff, but if you don't acknowledge it you're just doing propaganda.

I would argue pretending like this is actually for anyone's security is propaganda hiding the fact that this is all for Google to tighten its grip on Android.

The 360 was winning hard early in the 7th console generation, between the success of Xbox Live/popularity of Halo 3 and Sony's $500 starting price for the PS3 that made the Xbox's $300 starting price look great.

But later on in the generation, Sony made big price cuts and went hard putting out very good exclusive games that people bought systems for. By the end, they beat out Microsoft in sales.

Then the lead-up to the Xbox One launch was such a PR disaster which the another comment covered. The PS4 continued getting great exclusive games while Microsoft's big IPs like Halo and Gears of War more or less fell out of relevancy if not had their brand destroyed by new entries that didn't impress fans. They spent way too much time and effort trying to make the Kinect the future of Xbox in hopes of replicating Nintendo's success with the Wii, years after the novelty of motion controls stopped impressing anyone.

The unfortunate thing is they dropped the ball so hard that Sony basically stopped trying in the latest generation. Sony is pissing people off left and right but they're still winning because they have no direct competition (Nintendo has been off doing their own thing since the Wii)

Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:16PM (#50201168)
Man that is a crazy price for an unimpressive list of features.

You can get Claude Pro for $20/month and if you hook it into a browser, I'm not sure what you'd be missing out on from those listed perks.

I mean I get the benefit of a prepackaged experience but not at 5x the cost.

Basically everything Microsoft (deservedly) got shit for with the Xbox One, and which their reputation never recovered from, is bog-standard practice on consoles and plenty of games now.
Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @04:00PM (#50200225)
I think I saw something a while back that said they don't want to because they built a bunch of proprietary framework stuff that they want to keep for themselves cause they still use it in Dia.
Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @03:55PM (#50200184)
I'm still not sure what Arc offered that can't be solved if you know OS shortcuts which also work across all your apps.

If you do, and you regularly tile windows, you know that vertical tabs are terrible because if you have 2 browser windows and tile them side-by-side, suddenly 40% of your screen is wasted showing tabs on 2 windows.

I really don't want to learn an entirely different set of multitasking shortcuts just for my browser. I know how to multitask with my browser already, the same way I multitask with everything else, and none of the solutions seem more convenient.

Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:10PM (#50186928)
Yes but Bioware didn't make it
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:09PM (#50186919)
Both articles GP linked were jokes pointing blame at the mismanagement
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:00PM (#50186778)
Veilguard is a serviceable action romp but it's not a Dragon Age game.
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:48PM (#50186595)
BioWare is a Canadian studio

(But purchased by EA obviously)

Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:39PM (#50186435)
Damn, I have a buddy who works for them, he was working on the new Mass Effect. He just lost his mom very quickly a few months ago too.

He hosted a friend and I end of last year and gave us a tour of their offices in Vancouver. Hits close to home.

I had never played any Bioware games but after that trip it inspired me to finally get around to playing through the Dragon Age series, and I marathoned them all over the next few months. It wasn't hard to see the very steep decline in quality. Which is unfortunate cause they definitely had a lot of talent but were being sabotaged internally from executives jerking them around with trend chasing (for as bad as Veilguard was, it's surprising they cobbled something together that's at least somewhat cohesive when it was going back and forth between a single player and multiplayer game), as well as people being put in charge of major creative decisions that clearly had not earned that role.
