News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

hatu

But all the tropes are lifted straight from 80's action flicks with some irony thrown in so it's not surprising that they appear in a lot of these throwbacks.
Re:A Bitcoin miner in every hand on Monday May 18, 2015 @03:38PM (#9566420)
This is absolutely insane. You're basically getting $0.00000001 USD for cutting your phone battery life significantly.
Re:Why so many Dutch people work part time on Tuesday May 12, 2015 @11:38AM (#9532545)
I don't think it's Silicon Valleys fault. I see the same philosophy in every industry in every city in the US.
Re:Verizon to Buy AOL for $4.4B on Tuesday May 12, 2015 @11:27AM (#9532459)
Living in the midwest, when you're 10 minutes outside of a major city, you're lucky to get spoty 3G. After 20 minutes you're lucky to get any signal.
Agreed, I was expecting this to be about late night/weekend calls of "everythings broken! help!". I don't know how you'd say you charge extra for normal office hours.
Re:Ask HN: Where do you aim to be 30 years from now? on Monday April 06, 2015 @12:01AM (#9326418)
Retired/on a permanent vacation but still programming as a semi-serious hobby.
Re:Classic Game Postmortem: Loom [video] on Sunday April 05, 2015 @11:54AM (#9324368)
I was a huge fan of Loom too. There really aren't that many original and creative worlds in games and Loom definitely had one. Planescape Torment is another good example.
There's like 3 cities in the US with pretty good public transportation and they choose to launch in one of those?
Re:Mouse-Friendly Keyboard on Tuesday March 17, 2015 @09:56PM (#9223111)
And it's actually a nice and solid keyboard with mechanical switches. This looks like a basic flimsy $10 keyboard in quality.
Re:Valve Announces Source 2, and It’ll Be Free on Wednesday March 04, 2015 @03:36AM (#9143270)
It's been "next gen" for decades. It's just a terribly inefficient brute-force approach to lighting a scene. I don't think it'll ever be viable for real-time graphics.
Re:What I carry with me every day: Erik Spiekermann on Friday February 20, 2015 @04:58PM (#9083332)
Wallet, pens, a notebook. Got it. I don't really get the point, is it the hipster obsession with expensive "artisan" brands?
Re:Fuck It, I'm Going Back to Firefox on Friday February 13, 2015 @03:43PM (#9047067)
I don't think they've really added that many new features(visible to users) to Chrome. I've been using it since it came out and it still looks the same and I use the same features I used to. Maybe I'm wrong and just missed them since they were added so slowly. I guess the Dev Tools have been improved?
Write your own book and self-publish on Amazon. Set the price at $1990. Buy your own book with company money.
Re:Nodejitsu joins GoDaddy on Wednesday February 11, 2015 @01:17PM (#9034466)
This actually sounds terrible for their customers then! I guess they'll come back as one of those crappy GoDaddy add-ons they try to push on you for five pages before you can finish paying.
Most game investors these days are mostly looking for free to play games that have a business plan beyond selling copies in (digital stores). He's very against that type of games and games as businesses instead of artform in general.
Re:Google: YouTube is so overloaded staff cannot filter content on Wednesday January 28, 2015 @02:58PM (#8962162)
Not just any audio but known audio. Finding known video is something they can do already too. That's why some people upload clips from their favorite shows and flip them horizontally to avoid automatic detection. Think of it like a hash for the audio/video portion. Pretty easy to check if it's in the database.
Re:The Next Chapter – moot retires from 4chan on Wednesday January 21, 2015 @12:52PM (#8924349)
From what I could tell it quickly turned to a misogynist witch hunt with heavy doxxing and harassment and not a lot of actual substance
You're making the assumption that the bottom of the 1% and the top of the 1% have the same amount of wealth which is completely wrong. Nice superiority complex though. The $35k number is for the #70,000,000th wealthiest person.

According to your claim there would be 70 million millionaires in the world. Sanity check there?

If you take the global richest 1%, pretty much everyone on this website gets included. The cut-off point is at around $35,000 a year.
Re:Coffee naps are better than coffee or naps alone on Thursday August 28, 2014 @05:59PM (#8239957)
Especially since I think coffee for me is mostly a placebo. I know when I drink coffee I'm supposed to be more awake so there's no way I could take a nap after drinking one.
Re:Amazon’s Twitch Acquisition Is Official on Monday August 25, 2014 @05:18PM (#8224299)
That's a strange thing about Hearthstone. Watching a stream is almost as much fun as playing. You still get to make the decisions in your head since you have all the same information as the streamer.
Re:Amazon’s Twitch Acquisition Is Official on Monday August 25, 2014 @05:15PM (#8224287)
This is a good idea for a stream unless someone is already doing it. I remember people doing hard runs of games like that, beating the whole game without any weapons etc. I'd definitely watch that if I'm interested in the game already.
Re:Amazon’s Twitch Acquisition Is Official on Monday August 25, 2014 @03:36PM (#8223675)
You do realize that the most subscribed Youtube channel is literally just that. A guy playing games with funny commentary.

Re:How I made $40k within Shopify's trial period on Monday July 14, 2014 @06:15PM (#8033590)
Do you mean the original artist or whoever random internet dweller decided to submit one of the memes?
This is starting to sound like a Version Control type solution where you just update your Wikipedia every now and then and it merges the new info.
I'm sure you could batch process the pictures to a reasonable size and store all those on a big flash drive today already.
You sound stinky
Re:Good Poker Players Aren't Lucky on Wednesday May 21, 2014 @03:58PM (#7780423)
Come on, you're presenting anecdotal evidence to prove that Roulette isn't statistically random with a built in mathematical house edge. It's just silly.
Re:Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid on Friday May 16, 2014 @12:08PM (#7756198)
I think there's definitely some programming mindset stuff in it too, I remember the chapters about building your own set of instructions to do multiplication with only loops and earlier axioms (adding numbers together). I thought it was really fun to think about the problems.
