No-till agriculture solves the anthropogenic erosion problem, and can have yields equal to or higher than conventional agriculture. The main reason more people don’t do it is because you can’t monocrop on it year after year.
Careful, one or two more paragraphs down that slope and you might be accused of describing a Deep State and/or an insurrection

Is it safe to visit the region as a mountaineer tourist, these days?
Bittersweet. Because the reason all those dams are able to be sold is because the textile industry and paper industry that used to rely on them has all moved to Asia and Canada, decades ago, and now these mill towns are depressed drug dens

TVs returns came with a hefty restocking fee though, and designer clothes could be returned only with tags on (must be PRISTINE tags) for store credit or not at all. You may be too young to remember?

Like Al Gore? People love him I think
The way you are thinking about this makes me think the eventual solution will be a black box label on the gas pump that says “Studies have shown that burning gasoline increases the risk of climate-change related weather events”
> lawsuits assert that oil companies should help pay the escalating costs being imposed on the public by climate-fueled extreme weather because they knew the risks their products posed

How would one even begin to adjudicate that? How do you determine which storm or what portion of a storm was caused by climate change, and how do you determine what portion of climate change was caused by Exxon’s CO2 emissions or whatever?

I’m still not seeing it. A model can approximate it in a continuous way, sure, but an actual orderbook will always be discrete. And emergence doesn’t change that either.
I don’t understand how anyone can say market data is continuous. It’s an aggregate of discrete orders and transactions. It may look continuous if you squint, but it’s not.

Re:Yes, and on Friday October 09, 2026 @10:04AM (#50020738)
> Yes, there are still artisans making and selling beautiful rugs at premium prices. But most people now are content with resting their feet on a cheap Ikea thing that they can replace every few years, so that market has shrunk to almost nothing.

Yes, and it’s worth pointing out the class of people buying ikeas rugs were NOT buying Persian wool/silk rugs before…they had bare floors or make coverings out of cloth or woven grass.

Also worth pointing out that since 1979, regardless of whether it is secondhand or not and which country you are procuring it from, rugs made in Iran (Persian rugs) have been totally banned for import to the U.S. Tribal rugs now come more from places like Turkey and India. So the market is being extremely artificially suppressed, boosting ikea rugs even more.

Why does it have to be an adversarial country? Why does it have to be a country at all? Couldn’t it be the mayor of some town? Or a PR team at a fast food franchise group? Or one of SBF’s polycule members?

The notion we only see this news when it is calling out a country with which the federal government is in conflict makes me question to veracity and intent of the article itself, more than the content of it.

I was with you in the first paragraph. As I was reading I was reminded of old Cold War-era Soviet Union.

You lost me in the next paragraph where your solution was to centralize even more into a committee that has the power to bulldoze over more locally relevant needs and desires

Surprised this isn’t the top comment. Great video. TLDR fans have changed look but only gotten worse and the best fans are using 100 year old design that you have to oil every year

Re:Every SaaS business will become a harness around a model on Friday October 02, 2026 @06:33PM (#49939444)
A lot of (non-software) business is already like this, without the AI part.

There are 40,000 McDonald’s franchisees who basically just put money into a coinop machine and the machine returns with exactly the food, drinks, restaurant decor, prices, etc that it wants them to sell.

Toyota’s production system coordinates what gets made and when, detects abnormalities and directs human attention toward problems and improvement. They explicitly eliminate the need for people to continuously watch machines, while preserving human judgment

This is a space-focused post but you really think we don’t have underwater intelligence? What with the nuclear triad and all? What with threats something like a nuclear-armed P-700 being dropped by a merchant submarine secretly on the bottom of the ocean a few hundred meters from DC only to be launched remotely at a determined point in time?

Re:Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:34AM (#49878660)
As a body builder with a history of shoulder injuries, this is oversimplifying at best and wrong at worst.

You yourself recommend band work which is putting your shoulder under load

The real answer is the shoulder is complicated mechanically and you need to work on reinforcing or building the smaller groups (Is, Ys and Ts type of exercises and many others), if you can actively stabilize your shoulder this way you will reduce pain, inflammation and decrease the propensity for injury, allowing you to do traditional shoulder exercises like press etc without issue. I suggest working with a good PT

That…doesn’t sound like a bad thing for patients? That sounds like an increase in the standard of care. I’m not surprised a health insurer is mad about it though
