Re:Analytics: Hacker News v.s. a tweet from Elon Musk on Friday February 17, 2023 @06:36PM (#34842075)
Imagine had he 301'd that page to an Elon giveaway page after it was tweeted and then claimed he was hacked. he could have gotten away with it too. The economics and irrevocability of crypto , plus Elon's huge brand and credibility, create all sorts of new incentives. It's like the Bill Gates email scam of the 90s but multiplied by 1000x.

You actually get a million dollars if you solve it!

If you can get a YouTube elon crypto livestream to show up in recommendations, you can make that much in a week . This requires reverse engineering the YouTube algorithm. Which I am guessing is easier than the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture given that people have done this.

Re:Writing as Microcosm, Part One: Publish and Perish on Sunday November 06, 2022 @07:00PM (#33499131)
Stats showing low average earnings for authors is somewhat skewed by nonfiction authors. suspense, fantasy, young adult fiction can pay well.Non-fiction books are more numerous and niche compared to fiction books, which are typically intended for large audiences.
It has to do with the wage premium. it is still widdening for college grads. This needs to change for demand and thus prices and aid to fall. governments subsidize college so much because of the high roi.
Re:Michael Burry’s warning for the index fund bubble on Sunday November 06, 2022 @11:20AM (#33494175)
This makes no sense. stock prices are a function of earnings. for passive indexing to fail would imply a major recession, which would be bad for all stocks
didn't bill gates and Steve Jobs yell. seems to be common

Re:Lessons from a Professional Password Cracker on Sunday September 25, 2022 @08:46PM (#32978086)
meh. pro hackers do not crack or bruteforce passwords except as a last resort. they instead find some critical vulnerability that bypasses the need for passwords, or steal the browser sesion, or use malware. this is how so many people got crypto stolen despite strong passwords.

Re:What to read to become a better writer on Sunday September 25, 2022 @08:15PM (#32977893)
Writing advice is overrated. it's hard to know what readers will like. a lot of randomness involved. also, you need to build rapport or trust with the audience or reader, which is hard.
