Re:Ask HN: How does a 1990s web developer get back on track? on Monday January 11, 2016 @09:58AM (#10881059)
Throw away everything you've learned and start over. Pick something and run with it rather than trying to master everything. Write a simple demo app in a few frameworks, decide what works for you, and just go for it.
That presentation was done by Lord Scarlet, host of the Sixteen Colors ANSI art archive :)
not likely, as PETSCII are actually executables, if I remember correctly.

It's a dream to work with when compared with old-style BBS systems. Check out #1984 on EFNet IRC!

Whereas our HR department prefers that you warn the individual first, before you approach HR for a reprimand.
Re:JQuery hacked on Wednesday September 24, 2014 @01:47PM (#8362908)
Why do people do this rather than linking to a screenshot or something? By the time it comes up in my RSS news reader, it is almost always not in the same condition as when the link was posted.
Re:Ask HN: Hackers who cook on Tuesday September 23, 2014 @01:54PM (#8356845)
1. Both. It's cheaper, and often better than anything I can find in the small town where I live.

2. We plan MOST of our meals in a week, but leave a night or two open for flexibility and/or a restaurant visit.

3. All kinds of shit! My wife is an avid Pinterest user, and I am a former professional gourmet cook.

4. Nope.

5. LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY USE AND MAINTAIN KNIVES. That is the biggest tip that I can possibly give.

Re:I am locked out of my PC because of Windows 8 Login catch-22 on Tuesday September 23, 2014 @10:05AM (#8355360)
I've been caught in this catch-22 due to my hotmail account getting hacked a while back, but it's not tied to my Windows login -- just everything else to do with Microsoft. I guess I'll actually have to get it squared away soon, because it's taken down my Twitter account (minus one OAuth-authorized app that I can still use) and will soon take down Dreamspark, as well. :( Terrible system! I only ever used my hotmail account for MSN, so I can't answer any of their e-mail-related questions.
Re:Show HN: Matrix, a fast and flexible blogging engine on Wednesday May 14, 2014 @05:27PM (#7746546)
Growing very tired of trendy new apps that have no "about" link whatsoever -- just "login" and "sign up". Login and/or sign up for WHAT?!

Edit: I mean, where are the screenshots? Feature lists? Information about WHO is providing the service/app? Et cetera...

Re:Show HN: Wesnoth – Free, turn-based strategy game on Wednesday May 14, 2014 @05:24PM (#7746539)
I'm wondering the same thing. Also, this is not even close to new. My understanding is that it has been open source and freely available for quite some time.

Geisha are not prostitutes.
Re:Poll: How do you feel about working hours? on Wednesday November 27, 2013 @03:22PM (#6810859)
I am on salary, and therefore, I don't get any added benefit by working more than my 40. There are people in other departments that are blatantly taken advantage of, and wind up working 60+ consistently. I love developing software, and I even do it in my free time, but in my freelance projects, I charge by the hour. I don't do a bunch of extra work for free because I love what I do; I love what I do AND I recognize that it has value for the people I'm doing it for, and I should be compensated accordingly.

If they use varnish on their end, the problem solves itself. :)
Re:Ask HN: What will happen when everybody uses an ad blocker? on Friday September 13, 2013 @05:18PM (#6383234)
I would imagine they'd move to some sort of out-of-band method, where the servers use something akin to WebHooks (or maybe just WebHooks themselves) in order to rotate their ad stock, rather than loading the ad on-the-fly from a 3rd party site upon each visit. This would allow them to maintain an ad network while still serving the content from the same domain as the ad.
Announced by... An email? Or a post within Koding? At any rate, I'm glad to hear that they are backed up.
It's a fantastic platform; I'm just irked that my VM with all of my work was destroyed without so much as an e-mail prior to the release. :(
Re:What coding mnemonics do you use? on Wednesday August 07, 2013 @12:19PM (#6173773)
Or the "is greater than" (>) is a crocodile's mouth, and "is less than" (<) is a bird's beak. The bird eats smaller food than an crocodile eats, and the crocodile eats bigger food than the bird eats.
Not only is singular "they" perfectly acceptable, but the author neglected to point out the missing comma in the first sentence.
