The idea that people apply for positions and, if they are qualified, they are accepted. At least in theory.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:38PM (#50090544)
Passkeys are great for developers who are into cryptography and security, and who understand the idea and implementation behind it. For the rest of us it's something to avoid.

I don't use passkeys anywhere for fear of losing access. I just don't care enough to study how it really works. With passwords, I occasionally print out all my important passwords and store them in a safe and I know there's no way I could lose access.

Re:I don't like passkeys on Friday September 18, 2026 @10:09AM (#49754664)
I don't know much about passkeys, I have never implemented them. I once tried to find out more about them but all I could see is "you're going to regret using this one day".
Re:Most people prefer traditional architecture on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @02:19PM (#49716591)
I absolutely love neoclassical architecture.

I wish more people were building brand new, modern neoclassical buildings that are truly beautiful in a Haussmannian way, yet as practical as modern skyscrapers.. something like 1 Mayfair in London or 150 East 78th Street in New York.

Re:iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @05:22AM (#49709867)
Why Apple doesn't say "I'm sorry but your photos aren't accessible because they are being sorted and indexed at the moment"?

I didn't know in advance why Siri can't access my photos (turns out it's because indexing isn't done) - at the beginning I thought there was some sort of other problem. Later I figured out (after going through privacy/permissions stuff) that it's too stupid to know why it can't see my photos.

Amateurish.

Re:iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on Monday September 14, 2026 @08:54PM (#49706348)
Siri AI feels like a beta version (I think it officially is?). It’s unaware indexing isn’t done yet so it just tells me “I can’t find any photos of Italy” although there’s many thousands. Then it tells me how to let it access my photos using nonexistent iOS settings, even though permissions aren’t the problem. Amateurish.
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (to which they are all signatories) effectively prevents these countries from acquiring nuclear weapons. Unless they are willing to face international sanctions and economic ruin, that’s the end of the story.

"raison du joure these days"

I had to laugh out loud too when I read this.

Re:Claude Opus 5 on Saturday July 25, 2026 @04:15AM (#49045593)
You probably will. It's similar to steam engine and mechanical power loom.
I wish other car makers were as reasonable as Honda here.

No "evil valet" with half a brain cell would waste time hacking the head unit if they have physical access to the car. They would simply hide a spying device somewhere in the car.

Not to mention that people with Civics are never targets of three letter agencies.

Re:I'm Tired of Talking to AI on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @09:04AM (#48293683)
It seems that a lack of respect is the real issue here. A few years ago, you would have been met with silence, which is probably equally infuriating.
Agreed. It's been like that for years.
Re:om on Thursday February 26, 2026 @01:30AM (#47162612)
The only two letter combination that is not already used by another language.
The shopping centre where I shop frequently (Europe) has a large outdoor parking space and every 20 meters or so there's a little kiosk where you can return the cart. People do because it's actually easier to return it than to worry about crashing into it when you're getting out of the parking spot. From time to time an employee goes out and collects all the carts from kiosks and gets them back to the shop. I don't know if it's the same way in the US, maybe some people don't return it simply because they parked too far from the entrance.
Re:Apple M5 chip on Thursday October 16, 2025 @06:15PM (#45611339)
Or, better yet, asked people what they want: whether the phone should crash or slow down when the battery is choking.
Re:Apple M5 chip on Thursday October 16, 2025 @05:35PM (#45610988)
Disable transparencies in Settings then. Simple.
Me too. Complete silence, headphones but recognized random words before I had a chance to say anything.
Tried it is Safari, frustrating, confusing, spent some time figuring it out and closed the tab. I didn't say anything but the app kept "recognizing" some random words and "answering" tutor's questions... looks like pre-alpha version.

Re:The British sitcom that swept through the Balkans (2023) on Saturday April 19, 2025 @10:50PM (#43741169)
I think it was so popular in the Balkans because A) it was hilarious, B) people could actually watch it (on state TV, with subtitles). B is as important as A. Seinfeld would probably become very popular too, but no one could see it in the Balkans at the time.
Re:How to Force Your Kids to Do Math? on Saturday April 19, 2025 @09:57PM (#43740990)
I tell my kid that math is a language. You learn to speak it, just like you learn to speak any other language, slowly, by listening, understanding, speaking, intuitively recognizing patterns, rules and exceptions. When you start to become fluent you translate problems into math and solve them. At school they keep trying to make them memorize useful phrases, like a tourist that goes to Paris and learns how to say "where's the bathroom", "hello", "would you like to sleep with me", "thank you", "goodbye", etc.
Re:GIMP 3.0 Released on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @04:27AM (#43396884)
It's probably a lot of work.
Re:GIMP 3.0 Released on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @03:28AM (#43396611)
It's super easy, don't listed to hypersensitive people who can't stand two seconds of sales pitch. The same goes for the Economist, when I unubscribed the rep asked me if I'd like a 50% discount on a yearly subscription, I politely declined and that was it. One advantage of this is that you can easily pretend you're canceling in order to get a big discount. Some people just love to complain about every little thing.
It's a problem because it's done by a Chinese company and not an American company.
Re:Show HN: Convert your LinkedIn profile to a resume on Thursday December 12, 2024 @04:12AM (#42397554)
Why isn't there an XML or JSON format widely used for CVs? It would make sifting through CVs so much easier, plus it would make CVEO (CV engine optimization) a thing.

You insist that we should all agree on something but you don't specify what.
Re:WebP: The WebPage Compression Format on Monday September 09, 2024 @02:55AM (#41486071)
On iPhone you can set Low Data mode for all cellular data (and also for specific wifi networks).

She might have kept tapping Sync at the bottom of Photos even though iOS itself pauses it when in Low Data mode. iCloud Photos and video syncing is a data killer if you're on a holiday abroad, my wife takes hundreds of photos and videos a day, imagine what it does to data.

> how many developers are now considering whether iOS support for PWAs is good enough to sidestep this crap entirely.

It's hard to make any money on a PWA.

Especially “r”, horrible.
Re:Susan Wojcicki has died on Saturday August 10, 2024 @08:29PM (#41213185)
You're very wrong. Most people put in her position would be a disaster and they would either leave quickly or would be kicked out. Lots of people at Google left or were fired because they were crap, and they were definitely not randomly picked up from the street. She stayed and wasn't fired and that's because she was of the highest caliber.
