Disagreeable people are insurance policies. When the group is right, they are a drag. When the group is wrong, they are necessary.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
Re:Questions censored by DeepSeek on Thursday January 30, 2025 @07:58AM (#42877303)
Censorship just needs to work well enough for the average person. The brightest people who can bypass the censorship will be labeled crazy conspiracy theorists.

Re:The pandemic erased two decades of progress in math and reading on Thursday September 01, 2022 @12:11PM (#32678542)
We need to stop blaming the pandemic for things that were caused by lockdowns. Young healthy people were forced to put their lives on hold for 2 years so that some 86 year olds would make it to 87.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud? on Thursday September 01, 2022 @11:58AM (#32678336)
If a company is going to discriminate against me, I want it done early, before both parties waste their time. Interviews are a two way street.
All else equal, yes.
"Let's lock down young healthy people's lives for 2 years so that the 86 year olds make it to 87"
My young healthy sister got myocarditis after her booster and had to be hospitalized. This is after successfully fighting off a covid infection months prior.

I'm far from antivax, and have had 3 shots myself. But it's crazy that you aren't allowed to talk about this stuff without being labeled a conspiracy theorist.

A vocal minority doesn't need to be very large to influence culture.

Re:Things I learnt doing stand-up comedy on Saturday August 13, 2022 @11:23AM (#32450714)
I've noticed a pattern in comedians who have a funny set but never make it big. They have a shtick that works, lean into it, then end up using it as a crutch.

It doesn't scale to a funny second performance.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions

Almost all of science fiction is "what if aliens/robots did to us what we do to other animals".
The best friendships I've made in adulthood are mostly ex-coworkers.
In Calgary I've used a parking machine that asked for a lot number. That is on a sign as you enter the parking lot. As if this machine could not be programmed to already know which lot of was permanently installed in.
I'm always loading my bike/skis/etc into my car after a ride and forgetting to turn off Strava for the drive home.
Re:Ask HN: Starting a Career in Programming at 61? on Friday March 25, 2022 @02:00PM (#30805293)
Anecdotally I don't think my parents could learn to program at a hireable level in their 60s.
In a fairy tale nuclear disarmament would be great. But as long as any individual nation/dictator wants nukes, all nations will want nukes.
Re:'Children of Men' is happening on Saturday March 19, 2022 @03:23PM (#30736818)
Older parents are good for financial health. Less so for biological health.
I think that a lot of people think this in theory, but in practice the "boiling frog" phenomenon prevents them from following through.
The 3rd calendar year into this this, I'm willing to make that sacrifice. Everyone who wants to be vaccinated is vaccinated. Young people will overwhelmingly be fine. The old should make sacrifices for the young, not the other way around.
Re:YouTube is major conduit of fake news, factcheckers say on Wednesday January 12, 2022 @08:43AM (#29906175)
Those in power will always conflate the two.
Should children have to sacrifice their development to protect adults? I always thought adults should be the ones making sacrifices for children, not the other way around.
Re:My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer on Sunday December 26, 2021 @10:16AM (#29692976)
Yes. But not everyone thinks like this.
Time and time again "crazy" conspiracy theorists end up being right.
Re:Toddlers are harsh judges of moral character on Tuesday December 21, 2021 @08:22AM (#29637102)
If you have two kids, the first might be "youngest" for a couple of years and the second will be "youngest" for a lifetime.
Science is always up for discussion. A lot of people like making appeals to authority and calling that "science".

I say this as someone who is vaccinated and encourages others to be so as well.

Is a pig the farm's customer when they "pay" with their flesh?
I don't think capitalism is good, I just think the alternatives are worse.
