I specifically mentioned minimizing the amount of overtime
But I mean if you don’t see how if you want to reduce the cost of x and y is 60% of the cost of x warrants having a conversation about y, then maybe there’s nothing for us to talk about anyway!
I also said this was for the Bay Area - it’s not the norm but it’s not infrequent either
Labor costs are 60% or hospital expenses, I didn’t make that number up and you just glossed over.
And again, I said it was just an issue to be discussed. If discussion leads to it’s not worth discussing, that’s great and a great outcome
You did the thing where you just sort of read what you wanted to read in my comment vs addressing what it said
Sums up the reaction from a lot of developers too.
On the one hand, a good nurse is invaluable. They do the hard work that doctors won’t/don’t do, and can be so kind and generous during your time of need.
On the other ones, there are so many who mail it in and are just milking the system
Healthcare is so expensive - some nurses are making 500k a year - their union contracts base vary from 200k to 300k for something like 32-36 hours per week
On top of that, they can pretty much work unlimited overtime with zero restrictions. They can work enough overtime hours such that they can nearly double their salary. And that’s how you come up with the 500k figure I posted
Granted, that’s at the top of the range, I’m talking about somewhere like the Bay Area, and does require a ton of overtime, but those extra 100s of thousands add up. These hours can’t be spread around to minimize the amount of time and a half or double pay paid out, per contract they go in order of seniority
This is just nurses and I imagine it’s something similar but with higher rates for specialists like anesthesiologists and still beyond that doctors and surgeons
I don’t begrudge anyone’s salaries, but it’s a zero sum game. There’s a reason why, aside from typical corporate profit maximization, you wind up with a 30k bill for a short visit. Even if you account for the lower rates insurance companies pay, it’s still in the thousands of dollars for treatment where you were seen for less than 30 minutes
Like I said, to be clear, I don’t begrudge anyone’s salaries - this is just an under discussed point when we talk about healthcare costs
Labor is generally reported as 60% of the costs of hospitals - so if you’d ever want to talk about making healthcare affordable you’d have to address this which I feel like is a bit of a taboo subject. Many nurses are in a union which makes it an even more difficult conversation
All that is to say, I can see the motivation behind stuff like this, even if I don’t agree with it
In fact, I do everything I can to avoid having to move my hands off the keyboard - I have a stream deck that touches my keyboard so that I can quickly press a button with my hand barely moving for “advanced” shortcuts that I don’t feel like contorting my hand for, on top of all the usual shortcuts
I wish they’d devote resources to figuring out a better keyboard experience vs this also ran feature that I know for a fact almost no one uses
Much to my dismay this is real
I just looked this up and all I can say is wow. Legit reminds me of some of the stuff I read about as a kid about the Cold War, communism, etc
Wild that this stuff doesn’t even make the news anymore
They know how to present themselves in a way that not only they appear liberal, but appear liberal under scrutiny
They are rolling out versions of this but doing it in poor neighborhoods of course - heaven forbid they roll anything like this out in the Berkeley hills
Obviously im over generalizing for dramatic effect, but if this stuff can get passed in the Bay Area, I hold little hope we will successfully challenge it elsewhere
My guess based on my experience as a math major is that they just stop giving homework and the in class tests become more rigorous (can’t imagine how much harder they could have made these at my school at least)
My point is that no matter what tool you’re using, at some point you have to stretch your brain and the exams/screenings/etc just haven’t caught up to how to stretch someone’s brain in this new world and I’ve found just embracing the thing to be a better approach than any sort of pearl clutching
But having to do with this subject specifically, the pattern is so common and the behavior so blatant, the amount of looking out for each other is so absurd, that I’d reject any claim that gives them the benefit of the doubt that doesn’t come with convincing evidence
The problem is that this is the entry point to do more nefarious things later
Companies love to boil the frog - introduce something and later jack up the price or take something else away or something like that
I at least am always weary of new stuff like this
How I wish I could divulge details of what we’ve built, nay, shipped in the last 6 months - it would sound completely unbelievable to this audience and come with a host of accusations
But it’s true - the tide hasn’t risen all ships the same though. Some engineers have become absolute monsters - things that used to take a month get done in days. Features that used to be prioritized on the order of weeks are done way faster.
Some engineers though? Even high performance ones have gone productive to bottom 25% by some measures
Why? Because it is a skill and it doesn’t come naturally to everyone
So many may sayers everywhere talking about more code less software, mistakes by ai with disastrous consequences- yet I’ve seen some remarkable stuff with my own two eyes. It’s a crazy time to be in this business, it’s awesome to be wowed everyday by what someone was able to do
They leave a bunch of data sharing options built in and on by default with no warning, acknowledgement, etc and I suspect it's why asus lets the project continue to run
I'd be less disgruntled about it if a) i feel like i got my money's worth and most importantly b) everyone paid their fair share
If you've ever worked at a startup, you're probably familiar with the fact that no one gives a crap about this type of stuff early on
The hell with pretty much anything, the only thing that matters is revenue
People only start to care about this after the fact if you've grown to large enough size
If you think stuff like this or right to be deleted stuff is moving the needle anywhere but at the biggest companies, you've been misled
That's the real painful truth of this stuff, most of the time it's just lip service anyway
Wth is anyone going to do anyway? Go through a resource-draining lawsuit against a 20 person company where it will take a year of discovery just to maybe-sort-of prove they've been mishandling your data?
It's going to take some pretty radical new laws for this type of stuff to ever have any meaningful impact
I use a personal Claude account for personal projects and can let rabl run for an hour and barely make a dent into my usage
On the enterprise I have to be a lot more careful or I can burn through 2k in a week
The excuse they give is the guarantees you get with enterprise plans that they won’t look at your data
The whole sleep hygiene things been sort of discredited and doctors just follow a script with like 5 things they will prescribe you for sleep problems and after those 5 things it’s like oh well we tried
I once showed them a study I found online in a reputable journal (at least the study was conducted by someone from a well regarded university in a journal that wasn’t obviously bad)
The doctor didn’t even look at the study, he just saw where it came from and said “yeah we don’t use that journal”
I would have much more appreciated an answer if I don’t have time to read your bullshit vs what he gave me
Right now I don’t care, I just never plug anything into my network
I don’t want to have to mod all my shit just to remove data collection stuff this way
Cars already do this and it’s a bitch to disable, can’t imagine having to do it every time I buy a blender, coffee maker, knife sharpener, tv, light bulb, speakers etc etc
I’ve asked at rapidlu growing unicorns where I’ve worked “why don’t we ipo” and the big wigs every time just say, “why?”
If the original point of the ipo was to raise money and now you can do that privately, it stands to reason that a simple explanation might be that it’s not worth the hassle until the VC’s say they want their money back
I exactly. If you can’t tell the difference and AI and human “consciousness” are functionally the same to you, then what are you trying to prove?
I get it if you’re a researcher or simply pondering the question, but otherwise there are better questions to ask imo.
That’s the real comparison in my opinion
I get the whole apprenticeship route, but even that isn’t the same
Specifically what I mean is what if a teenager took 4 years to really home a skill before even looking for a job?
If you wanted to be an electrician and spent a couple years really learning from somewhat first principles up and keep yourself in good shape, you’d be set up for success
The article makes it seem like someone who would be smart enough to go to college and graduate wouldn’t be smart enough to navigate how to get an electrician job or pass those aptitude tests?
Also, a lot of trades people simply don’t take care of themselves. I’m not saying the job isn’t hard, because it is. My dad was a contractor and I worked on the sites every summer til I graduated college
But these dudes would eat like crap, skip ear protection, prove how manly they were by working to exhaustion - this only makes the “these hands” lectures worse
All in all the article felt scattered much like my own comment
The truth is, there are some people who go to college who should have gone into the trades in stead. I’d go on a limb and say I’m sure of it. (And the answer isn’t purely based on intelligence which the author touches on condescendingly)
Similarly, I’m sure a lot of kids who go into the trades would have been better off going to college
What’s missing imo is guidance
What kids imo need is guidance, someone to give them exposure to what’s out there in some way, lay out options, pros, cons and help kids make an informed decision
The real problem is that there are so many professions that people simply don’t know about - instead of telling people to go to college or scare them away from trades, I’d be pushing to introduce more of these resources to high schools. No kid at my high school would have ever known what a business systems analyst is or what firmware is.
I can handle issues much better if they are predictable even if the model makes mistakes — much more frustrating when the model is erratic
I find codex wanders off road more often and fails to see the “bigger picture” (as much as LLMs can see the bigger picture at least)
And tbh when it was first released Astral felt even worse
I’m being forced to use it right now and at the end of the day I’m making do so it’s fine, but Claude makes for a smoother experience
Your kind is what makes the internet shit, not AI
Why is it so black and white?
Same or next day shipping on most things I order is wild, when something goes beyond a 2-3 days on Amazon it even feels odd
And the “do you actually need the item/s that fast” isn’t the response I am looking for
I genuinely forget I’m not using Google until I come across articles like this
I’m not always in the best areas so this def comes up for me personally
Outside of that I think I’d give this a shot
