Re:Last rites for Gentoo's Chromium package on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:08PM (#50159681)
Good luck to anyone maintaining distro package builds

Just changed some VMs to gentoo, and I think is currently the best disto. Best customization, uptodate/stable packages, user package repo

I think nix packaging language looks more maintainable and future proof. But eventually run into issues

Also haven't update Firefox in 3 years, I'm sure he can manage a few days without throwing a tantrum

Don't think this is new info

In UK, if you go to the doctor they will recommend acetaminophen/calpol first because ibuprofen anti-inflammatory effect will affect the body's natural response to the "problem" or something like that

It is clear that is probably looking for more powers to implement Digital IDs, censor and further restrict the internet

Some people still have trouble understanding half of the population can disagree with you

There were dozens of TV debates, government politicians making statements on TV, news interview, workplace heated debates, family dinner debates

The EU centralization scepticism has always been present

If anyone wants a conspiracy maybe try why was the remain campaign so bad, bad arguments, and even with most debates and interviews biased to help them, they always came across tepid

Been using an OpenWrt from ebay, BT Hub, with vdsl, for more than 5 years, rock solid, will probably look for an upgrade soon

Would definetly try DD-WRT also

Re:Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users on Sunday September 13, 2026 @09:08AM (#49683575)
Got this at the airport

Just after paying for a ticket in the Ryanair website "we are going paperless so if you want the boarding pass, you need the app" what about PDFs you might ask? That is not good enough apparently

I got no Play store, and Aurora was not working, luckily Apkmirror/f-droid/Universal installer saved the day

In the end I could also claim the app was not working and get a paper at the desk

But the present is here "everything is easy!" You just need a google/apple, with 100 apps, 200% battery, and loose internet for a minute you are not a valid citizen anymore

I use several models, each seems to solve different problems better

I always use open source apps, but at the same time I wonder how can my we all benefit from each other data respectfully of privacy, health or otherwise

And anyway the data that the other 50 apps are collecting on most people phones can be used to infer most of this. Your locations, what you bought recently, what you searched online, which sites have you been, what you asked your chat bot, what you liked or viewed in social media...

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage too many open tabs? on Friday July 17, 2026 @06:17AM (#48945482)
21k from around one year

I use the extension 'Tree Style Tab', with some settings changed, and 'Auto Tab Reaper' to unload old tabs. Or Sidebery

Eventually I will probably just bookmark them Ctrl-Shift-D, which was what I was doing before, at the end of the day for all tabs open

So later I can tell the llm to go mine something forgotten

Pixel 7, nothing happens

It takes a few seconds, and redirects to about:blank

vagrant, docker, qemu, lxc, libvirt, incus, proxmox, nixos, guix, incusos, talos, microVMs, distrobox, distrobuilder, ansible, terraform, cloud-init... Just crazy layers of choice and combinations

I am trying vanilla qemu with cloud-init. Images: https://images.linuxcontainers.org/images/

The reality is no one wants to vote for the 2 main parties. Here and all across the country

And I don't think the binhead is an answer, even if funny

Farage and Reform are still the only viable alternative

Also the media gives 0 coverage to the hundreds of actual good independent candidates

For anyone with a working homelab there is no reason to switch

Re:My Favorite Keyboards on Thursday July 02, 2026 @01:46PM (#48764965)
Don't like having a 2 piece keyboard, or missing F keys

Can I get a full layout keyboard, split, wired, with a trackball, in a single board. Or is that too much to ask?

Meanwhile, Keychron Q10 is the best

Waylanders propaganda to scare people to move away x11

And rewriting POCs of existing projects will not necessarily increase productivity

Maybe development generally was getting unnecessarily complex, and people were cutting corners. And now with AI they will be able to do it better. Which possibly wouldn't directly justify the amount invested AI

Very entertaining campaign
Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Monday June 22, 2026 @07:32AM (#48628767)
Claude code does detect this

It was the first time I got surprised about AI code QA

It will note an inconsistency on: nil check, on constructor, returning an error VS nil check, on process function, failing silently

Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Sunday June 21, 2026 @02:12PM (#48621166)
Following your logic. Rust can be an abusive relationship

He looks quite ugly and tells you will never do better than him. The compiler beats you every day. He keeps saying how everyone else around you has problems. You think you don't need to learn how to do things by yourself because "the compiler will fix everything". When you finally release something already dozens of projects in other languages took off. When you ask him to do more than one thing you both get frustrated. And because of the Stockholm syndrome you keep telling everyone it was for your own good

Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Sunday June 21, 2026 @12:21PM (#48620199)
You can see the code

Clearly is not large. Second the child object is a pointer so does not violate anything

And if if if... I am sure we can look for new constraints in any language

Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Sunday June 21, 2026 @10:45AM (#48619413)
I think the author can propagate RateLimiter instead of *RateLimiter, making it exactly the same
Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Sunday June 21, 2026 @09:36AM (#48618872)
To avoid propagating the pointer I would change *RateLimiter to RateLimiter

DecodeRequest can return Request instead of *Request, or error if not valid

Also I would replace `if userID == "" {` with `if err != nil {`. If an object is not loaded successfully returning error I think is more standard

Re:Excessive nil pointer checks in Go on Sunday June 21, 2026 @07:55AM (#48618129)
Just change

type RateLimiter struct { redis *redis.Client }

To

type RateLimiter struct { redis redis.Client }

Just make it not a pointer in subsequent code, after validated. Makes it clear no further checks needed. Or am I missing something?

You could chose not to waste time here

Or haven't found a better place to waste your time?

Maybe you need a new law enacted to help you?

Not sure limiting people access to information sharing, content discovery, and virtual communities, is comparable to smoking
A society whose individuals needs government laws to make good "choices" is probably doomed

The only possible law is making bigco social media less addictive, and better controls for parents

But maybe this is UK just exercising some soft power, since they have no tech to speak of
