Re:Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend? on Friday July 24, 2020 @06:15PM (#23945046)
Probably play Valorant, slackline in the park, read a book (Pain Free as of recently), and cook some food for the week.
Re:Ask HN: What is your passive income in 2020? on Friday February 21, 2020 @05:00PM (#22387312)
3458 shares of VTSAX. Can't get any more passive than index funds.

Re:Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions? on Thursday December 26, 2019 @07:40PM (#21888133)
I'd like to cut back due to the negative impact it's had on my sleep and general motivation. I've found that daily smoking really reduces the quality of my sleep, which means 8 hours of sleep with THC in my system is closer to 5-6 hours. As far as motivation goes, the dopamine release from THC really reduces my drive and makes me more content/complacent than I would like to be. As a note, my total intake is really low (less than 1 gram every three months), but I still feel like I shouldn't feel obligated to smoke on a daily/weekly basis.

Hah I feel you on the smoking, with vape pens it's almost too easy to take a quick hit here and there. Cutting back weed is probably number 1 on my resolutions for next year.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I'm really curious about the TypeScript hate. Besides some odd type mapping here and there, I've really enjoyed using it over plain old JS.
How would you be able to pull out any information out of an audio recording of keyboard typing? Wouldn't the training set differ between keyboards too? Sounds interesting it it worked, do you have any sources?
Name and shame.
Not directly answering you question, but on a similar note, would you be more willing to use the "free version" of these tools if they did the following:

  - Explain what data they share
  - Explain who they're sharing the data with
  - Give full control over what data is shared
  - Give the ability to easily delete/export your data once you decide you no longer want to use the application
I thought it might be an interesting experiment to offer both a "free" and "paid" version. Rather than cutting features for the "free" version, you would instead sell the user's semi-anonymized data. This could even be something like a sliding scale for those more privacy conscious, with more reimbursement given for more data shared.
My interest in FIRE can really be boiled down to this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJjKP8vYjpQ

I'm on board and actively pursing FIRE. I'm not sure if I'll actually choose to retire when I hit the magic number (~20x your yearly expenses), but it does provide me with a sense of satisfaction and stability.

I think a lot of the FIRE community over evangelizes the "RE" portion of FIRE, but that may just be a reflection of the high stress/high pay types of jobs that many FIRE pursuers find themselves in.

Sounds like it's time to look elsewhere. The fact that this "huge push" wasn't made clear to you prior to the promotion process sounds like your manager really dropped the ball.
Re:Ask HN: What documentary had an impact on you? on Monday March 11, 2019 @03:35PM (#19362055)
Whore's Glory - Extremely raw documentary that gives an inside look into the lives of prostitutes from various countries (Bangladesh, Thailand, Mexico). It was seriously fucked up and eye opening.
Re:Ask HN: What do you struggle with? on Wednesday August 29, 2018 @02:10PM (#17870328)
I struggle with cronic injuries. Over the years I've accumulated a few different injuries to my shoulder, back and knee which put me in a constant state of pain. It's not debilitating but it is relentless. I'm always around a 3/10 on my pain scale, which just means I'm always uncomfortable. I can manage with stretching and some targeted exercises, but generally my injuries do not subside.
Re:Ask HN: iOS developers, where did you learn? on Sunday August 12, 2018 @04:43PM (#17746328)
One of the ways I learned was through examples provided by Apple. What I would do is download the example, see how it worked and then change something small. Once I fully understood how that feature/component/class worked I would re-implement it with whatever logic I wanted to use in my own application.

This has worked for pretty much any mobile project I've done. I'm currently doing the same thing with ARKit + Vision framework.

Definitely. While you're at it maybe you could throw in handwriting pointers too. I've found my handwriting has become drastically worse after college.
This is pretty interesting. Did you ever have to interact/view the content?

I almost took a job at a porn company (streaming based) but declined not due to ethical concerns but rather due to the fact that I got a bad vibe from the CEO (he seemed like an ass).

Wow that app is exactly what me & my friends have been looking for. They even started hacking together an Android version of this. Looks really well done!

One question: Do you plan on writing a native desktop solution? I'm not a fan of having to keep my browser open just to run a single app.

Re:Ask HN: What would you pay $10,000 for right now? on Tuesday February 27, 2018 @07:49PM (#16479707)
I'd pay $10k to figure out what exactly is wrong with my body. I've had constant injuries or issue with my shoulder, knee, and back for the past 5 years. Feels like I'm falling apart due to old age but I'm not even past 25 yet.
Re:Ask HN: What is development like at your company? on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @11:55AM (#15808367)
I always question the 'business decision' to not write tests. How did management justify this point to the developers? Was there any push back?

I ask because our business team has a similar stance on developers writing tests (i.e. it's not worth the effort).

Re:Ask HN: What books are you reading? on Thursday June 22, 2017 @02:47AM (#14610521)
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.

It goes into detail about the Mount Everest disaster in the 90s.

Re:Ask HN: How Much Alcohol/Coffee Do You Drink? on Friday May 19, 2017 @01:37PM (#14377815)
I generally don't drink coffee, it makes me jittery and anxious.

Alcohol...once a month but in large quantity. Usually go on a bender while barhopping/at a party with friends. Definitely need to shake that habit.
