"fair" - treating people equally
In other words, I interpret the original question as: "how is making an example not considered unusual?".

what about the gay athletes who wish to compete? It makes it a little tough to not be involved in this type of stuff.

by "somewhat negative", do you just mean that less information makes you less confident about a decision? Or do you mean that being quiet is bad?
