They really turned it around. You should check it out.

But yeah, super crappy launch.

Why does it matter if it’s coming from Airbnb vs some other business? Should the originating business crowd out interest in the actual topic for the reader?
This “both sides” argument is so weak.
Re:Notes on Starting to Use Django on Wednesday January 28, 2026 @01:52AM (#46791903)
The nice thing in this case is that Django will meet you where you are with your preferences. Want to go the manual route? Sure. Want it to take a shot at auto-generation and then you customize? Very doable and. Want to let Django take the wheel fully the majority of the time? Sure.

Congrats on your progress! This is pretty cool.

Most countries don’t have a notion of a formally licensed software engineer, anyway. Arguing what is and is not engineering is not useful.
Re:Will a 50-Year Mortgage Make Homes More Affordable? on Monday November 10, 2025 @09:58PM (#45883684)
Homes are lucrative investment vehicles. I’d expect many of these to get gobbled up people and companies looking to make a buck.
Re:A Major Postgres Upgrade with Zero Downtime on Thursday January 30, 2025 @05:52AM (#42876651)
I’ve never been on a team that migrated to Aurora PG for raw query perf. It is slower than a bespoke setup that is optimized for raw latency, but Aurora is going to hold up under much higher traffic with much less fuss. It also has an excellent snapshot/restore facility.
Re:Uv's killer feature is pulling in local dependencies on Sunday January 12, 2025 @10:40PM (#42679854)
I'm glad to let uv handle that for me. It does a pretty good job at it!

Auto vacuuming is enabled now. We did have some near misses due to long running vacuums that barely completed before wraparounds, but got things tuned over time.

I did none of that work but was on the team where it happened.

Re:New York Times Tech Workers Go on Strike on Monday November 04, 2024 @11:18AM (#42042977)
More than a few do not. You shouldn’t have to barely scrape by as a single parent in one of the most wealthy countries in the world.
The last line in the comment was a little petty but I don’t think I’d describe it as a Molotov cocktail. It sucks that we’ve ended up in this situation but Texas is an objectively more risky place to live if you are in the 50% of the population that has a uterus.
Re:Ubuntu Linux snuck into high-end Dell laptops on Sunday October 22, 2023 @04:09PM (#37978640)
Had great results with my Dell XPS 17. Everything but the fingerprint reader works out of the box.

Re:ZeroMQ – Relicense from LGPL3 and exceptions to MPL 2.0 on Monday October 09, 2023 @05:10PM (#37825518)
Seen this quite a few times as well, but we’ve managed to strike the indemnification clause from various third party CLAs by putting our legal teams in touch.
Seems possible or even plausible, but can't help but feel like this takes us one step closer to:

Sounds interesting! Do you have screenshots of what the TUI looks like anywhere?
Re:Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default on Wednesday March 29, 2023 @10:52AM (#35358127)
Same. Just moved to Fedora about 6 months ago and have pleasantly surprised. Works better on my laptop as well.
Re:Self Hosted SaaS Alternatives on Sunday March 05, 2023 @09:35PM (#35036874)
Some providers block or score hit IPs from popular provider blocks due to the amount of spam that comes from them.
Netflix is still remote friendly in general.
Is this going to be available for self-hosted enterprise users?
Re:Ask HN: How to Exit FAANG? on Thursday February 16, 2023 @03:44PM (#34825769)
It is for some of us! Probably not in the cards for everyone, though.
Rep has been fine for me as well. And much cheaper than Rogue.
They may mean "unregrettable attrition".

Twitter is a good deal bigger than reddit. At least pre-Elon. 200MM+ DAU vs 50MM+.
Wondering whether it's EVE Online
Re:Steve Jobs Said the Best Managers Never Want to Be Managers on Saturday December 03, 2022 @04:26PM (#33847538)
Why do you need to be a top IC after years managing managers? Some of the worst managers I've seen tried to cling too much to the technical details, which is smothering to the actual ICs.
