Because our so-called "democracy" is working so very well in contrast?
Re:Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting on Friday February 28, 2025 @03:09PM (#43209781)
So it was just like literally everything else this administration is doing. Shocking.
Most astute comment so far.
“Really?” One finally said, with emphasis. Then, a nod. “That’s actually pretty amazing. Good on you. That’s exactly what we want AI to do—help people catch things early.”

Today, on "that totally happened."

An article that starts out with nonsense billionaire-worship propaganda? No thanks.
Re:AT&T customers hit by widespread cellular outages in U.S. on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:31AM (#39469481)
Did you miss or just ignore where I agree with you that our government is a massive joke? That doesn't mean that I don't want a real, functional government that operates for the good of its citizenry, or that we don't live in a corporate dystopia where we get charged every last cent they can get away with and barely provide their purported services. You're acting like these networks are otherwise as reliable as they say, provide the advertised speeds, and that these companies aren't doing the bare ass minimum possible to maximize their already egregious profits while paying their employees crap like every other company.
Re:AT&T customers hit by widespread cellular outages in U.S. on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:36AM (#39467693)
> laws or enforcement

No no no, see, we have those. But we only use them to make sure that our for-profit prison complex stays massively profitable and the people in power retain that power.

Re:AT&T customers hit by widespread cellular outages in U.S. on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:31AM (#39467606)
Isn't it wonderful that we allow almost entirely unregulated monopolies that have no actual obligation to provide the service for which they take your money?

Telecoms, airlines, insurance scam..ahem companies...

Must be nice. I wonder if I could just stop showing up to my job and keep collecting my check. No? Why not? We allow the entities that write our laws and have politicians rubber stamp them to do it. Seems a mite unfair.

What useless, self-important horse manure.
Thank you. The modern usage of corporate structure as a complete get-out-of-consequences card, combined with the fact that every politician is just a warm body filling a suit at which corporations throw money to rubber stamp regulations...written for the lawmaker by the corporation are the problems. Problems. I'll say it again for the kindergarteners that still think Libertarianism is cogent. These are problems.

They probably just forgot some mundane detail.

I await more of the story campaign with bated breath. I'm adoring it, though the last episode felt a tad rushed, or flat maybe. To me, at least.
Re:The Internet Is Full of AI Dogshit on Thursday January 11, 2024 @01:21PM (#38956334)
I'll go one further, though I expect to receive mockery for doing so: I think the internet as we conceive of it today is ultimately a failed experiment.

I think that society and humanity would be better off if the internet had remained a simple backbone for vetted organizations' official use. Turning the masses loose on it has effectively ruined so many aspects of our world that we can never get back, and I for one don't think that even the most lofty and oft-touted benefits of the internet are nearly as true as we pretend.

It's just another venue for the oldest of American traditions at this point: Snake Oil Sales.

>Big corps could just pick things that are trending up, rip them off instantly and scale their ripoff much better thanks to their great workforce and marketing reach.

Except that they are already doing this, and since money == "justice" in this country and most of the rest of the world, their big bag of money means that you have zero realistic chance in winning any attempt at suing them for doing so.

Copyright is a great conversation to have, but it's a bit like sitting around talking about how to best dry off a plate in the Titanic dining room.

It blows my mind that people still want to move here, not leave. I get it if you're leaving war behind or something, but if you live in any other Western democracy, you're probably better off staying there. The US is more openly and actively hostile to its populace with every passing day. Not white, male, land owning, cisgendered, straight, and at least pretend to be some flavor of judeo-christian? Fuck you today and fuck you harder tomorrow. Oh, you are those things? Wait...you also need to be rich, sorry about that. Oh, and have a complimentary fuck you.
And I love it when people cling to the idea that that isn't the case.
Re:Living to 120 is becoming an imaginable prospect on Friday September 29, 2023 @02:55PM (#37708656)
This being just a few lines down from a story on housing being unaffordable for the vast majority of Americans in 99% of the country is...well.
On which, compared to a gas range, cooking sucks total ass.

I'm a litle surprised to see something so vapid ranking so high on the site.
Re:Future Blues – Emily's Cowboy Bebop Page (1999) on Sunday April 16, 2023 @02:20PM (#35592746)
The evolution of the internet has been straight down since the 90s.
Unless it's a Logitech headset, in which case 90% of the time the functionality of the mic-arm-mute breaks at the software level requiring various troubleshooting dances before anyone can hear you again. How they can be such a leader in the peripheral space but still produce absolutely the worst garbage software will never stop being annoying.
Re:‘Every message was copied to the police’ on Wednesday September 22, 2021 @08:25PM (#28623816)
That's exactly where my mind went as I read the article.

All of this money and effort just to continue to prosecute a meaningless and harmful "drug war."

At this point, countries are literally spending money to prevent themselves from making money (by setting up legal markets and tax structures).

It's all so absolutely and miserably asinine.

Re:Our World in Data: Suicide on Thursday August 06, 2020 @11:01PM (#24077571)
I really wish there were better resources out there than a hotline that results in you being thrown in a locked down "padded" room in a hospital where nobody has any business taking care of or treating mental health patients.

This is speaking of the U.S. obviously, for anyone that doesn't know that this is the outcome for way, way too many people trying to get help.

I'm currently on contract at a TINY hospital in the middle of freaking NOWHERE. We had a nine year old boy locked in an empty room for WEEKS. Weeks. Shuffled him around some, then he'd come back for a few more WEEKS.

Health care in this country is absolutely fucking garbage, and mental health care is the slime that gathers in the bottom of the landfill.

Re:New 13-inch MacBook Pro on Wednesday May 06, 2020 @12:36AM (#23087931)
I was initially waiting for this new 13", because I was finally needing a MacBook. I got tired of waiting and, as these things usually happened, bought an upgraded and battery-replaced 2015 13" MBP a week ago with 16GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD for a grand. Do you know what that RAM and storage space costs on the new 13" model? More than double that. I'm pretty okay with my decision.
Re:I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me happier on Monday December 03, 2018 @09:45AM (#18589103)
Heh. Maybe I should get some detoxifying food pads and start buying the essential oils one of my coworkers peddles, too.
Re:I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me happier on Monday December 03, 2018 @09:44AM (#18589097)
And you seem to be missing that that isn't what the article was about. The article was talking about the people that I find absurd: "I can't stop letting sosh meeds run my life so I have to just not use them."

The issue of trading data for service isn't new and wasn't the subject of the article.

Re:I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me happier on Sunday December 02, 2018 @05:55PM (#18585105)
I don't get how people can let Facebook take up so much of their life/time that they have to delete it or stop using it to "get their life back." I find it ridiculous.

I use Facebook basically for two purposes. Sharing and consuming denk mems, and for scheduling gatherings of friends that use Facebook (which is mostly all of them, because this is about all they use it for too).

People need to stop acting like these things are somehow controlling anything you do and realize that they're just tools. Do what you want with them.

If that's "not use it" for whatever reason, fine. I just wish people would stop with these nonsensical "I QUIT FACEBOOK AND NOW MY LIFE IS SO MUCH BETTERER" stories.
