Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:31AM (#50316553)
Fractional reserve crypto banking? What's the next thing to reinvent? Mortgages?
I'm not sure if I understood the details from the article, but there was also a previous mistake where Waltz added Goldberg's number as a contact number for Hughes. This was just iPhone doing its thing and syncing contacts I guess?
I've seen people begging with their electronical direct transfer info.
That seems unconvincing. Don't most people already have most of their money centrally stored in banks? The topic at hand is merely if when they want to spend that money, if they take it out of the bank in physical form first and then spend or if they use electronic payments. Refusing to move to a cashless society won't prevent people from being locked out of their money except for what they keep under their mattress.
Even if I'm thinking of an Indiana Jones-like character doesn't mean I want literally Indiana Jones. If I wanted Indiana Jones I could just grab a scene from the movie.
Are you implying there is a very small chance that if someone posted in 2018 reddit "We should tariff Algeria at 35% because X", the LLM that the administration may have used would have agreed with random redditor?
I think Thailand is much more integrated to the West in all sorts of ways. And Myanmar is deep into a civil war and that I assume reduces greatly the number of foreign journalists, foreigners in general, social media access, etc.
I think the best hope for native Linux gaming at this point is that the Steam deck and Proton in general becomes so popular it makes it worth it to consider native Linux too.
Discord I guess would be quite valuable, even the de facto public servers.
Is this stuff only affecting the not for profit web? What are the for profit sites doing? I haven't seen Anubis around the web elsewhere. Are we just going to get more and tighter login walls and send everything into the deep web?

Just in case you didn't know, cryptominers in Javascript are already thing. Firefox even blocks them.

I wonder how long until everyone gets a cryptographic public key and has to sign every HTTP request to not be blocked. Or every site requires login to use. And social media and things like bug reporting all requiring real ID.
Re:Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord on Monday March 10, 2025 @01:03PM (#43322576)
Eh, lemmy is a bit of an exception because it is a leftwing split from reddit and reddit has been on very left mood those last years. The most obvious one I was thinking of was Voat, which was shutdown a while ago.
And you can even update your clock info from the GPS signal. So the only dependency is GPS or similar.

But would Iranian missiles even use GPS? Isn't accuracy limited for civilian use for precisely this reason?

Re:Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord on Thursday March 06, 2025 @09:13PM (#43286907)
Well, I guess it's better than the reddit alternatives that are full of communities who got banned from reddit.
Re:TSMC Expected to Announce $100B Investment in U.S. on Tuesday March 04, 2025 @03:50PM (#43259677)
This specific one is so common, are people actually mistyping or getting autocompleted? flashbacks to Rouge One
> Wrangling means that you don't need to know whether the most popular tag for your new fanfic featuring Sherlock Holmes and John Watson is Johnlock or Sherwatson or John/Sherlock or Sherlock/John or Holmes/Watson or anything else.

"Featuring". Yes Wired that is a technically accurate description.

They could have tried Steam, but I don't think it works as well. Although they did start with the pure freeform one and switched to a managed one the next day.

I think the sort of Discord group being discussed here counts as "in public". You can join interest groups by just clicking a link with an anonymous account. It's out of view of Google, unindexable, hardish to search and to collect organized information from, but it is more public than say, old newspaper archives in microfilm that anyone can look at in a library.

People are going to discord for that because it is convenient as a platform for a variety of reasons, not because they want to hide it from the public imho.

I think people would dunk on Meta for not seeding
I think the equivalent is called author's right in civil law countries
Is this not important enough for senior management?
Re:A Marriage Proposal Spoken in Office Jargon on Wednesday January 15, 2025 @05:05PM (#42717775)
Lost opportunity to say "Would you accept a merger?" instead of marriage.
As much as I love Tintin, gotta agree with Hergé here. Although Congo and America aren't that much better.

I don't know how old your sister-in-law is, but children are probably the biggest exception to "discrete colours" in modern culture.

Everything in a paint store is a colour!

I don't see why announcing DST would be a big effort. And it saves on electricity costs.
I'm starting to think if the Chinese had a point with their proposal to reform Internet protocols.

I would like to quote the creator of Dogecoin:

> In reply to that, Mr Markus was asked whether he had considered energy usage when creating the cryptocurrency.

> “i made doge in like 2 hours i didn’t consider anything,” he wrote.

Re:Want Growth? Kill Small Businesses on Wednesday October 09, 2024 @08:13AM (#41787020)
Not financial expert but I think "liquidity in the market" would be more of a high-frequency trader thing. The advantage to everyone else is that good investors inject information into the market and move prices towards their "correct" price earlier, preventing other investors from buying overpriced securities. Of course they make a profit by capturing the chance to buy underpriced securities but there's still a benefit. It also ought to mean financial resources are better allocated towards companies that are profitable and/or will make a profit in the future.

tl;dr: (Actively managed) funds and investors are the Gosplan of capitalism.
