some of the things come up over and over and over... I've trained 5 people in being food service acapble for the volunteer fire pancake breakfast and they've all moved to the county seat. I'm just a jobs program I guess.
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:31AM (#50082792)
but you own those repos, and you own the tooling on them. if tooling sprawls in many repos, it can sprawl in sub areas of a mono-repo. it's interesting that it's less work to build a new source control system versus manage multi-repo and cross builds.

you misunderstood what I said. I said the shaking. That's hydraulics and big resonant chambers... it's what you think it is.
Re:What should we tell our students? on Friday October 09, 2026 @09:59PM (#50028759)
way back in the dark ages when I was in college I used the hell out of back files. we all did. Over the years the teachers had added more and more homework because the students using backfiles were answering more and more homework correctly. The teacher swore that home work should take about 3 hours a week. the smartest guy I knew did it once without backfiles, because the fraternties, the holders of the backfiles, were all at an off campus event. it took 17 hours. he just gave up and used the backfiles.

I don't think homework load has adjusted in some classes. it was hard to do the homework and learn honestly, it was just copying and finding previous answers. it actually detracted from the learning experience.

it would be nice to have something that could explain it to me, like a tutor. My mom paid for me to have a private tutor to get me through a compressed calc 3 summer class. Best I scored in a math class other than diffy-q.

so I think it's, like everything, on the student. but fuck the homework load at some places, it's not a good solution.

for me it's not the truck that's that loud... it's the shaking of the trash can and dropping it on the pavement to fall over that makes the noise

Re:Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked on Sunday October 04, 2026 @10:20PM (#49960003)
My fire/emt up in the mountains near seattle requires 48 hours a month and around another 8 hours a month training (which can be concurrent with shifts usually). But that also includes sleep if you're not called. As others have said, it's dependent.
Re:Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:54PM (#49959868)
The CE hours is really annoying and really unclear until you realize they're replacing a self attestation method with CBT automation and software. I had easily more hours of certs in one year than I needed for my bi-annual cert. Heck Hazmat ops or awareness covered half of the total hours.

It is annoying though. I'm pretty sure they're trying to make it easier but it's confusing. The real issue is that none of the old folks at my station care about keeping up the NREMT up as they don't even have one, and the career folks just care about state which is automatic as part of doing their jobs.

Just remember that for every CBT you do online, you also do a hour of practical sign off.

I would find it quite hard to stay in practice just doing the test, nothing beats the randomness of patient contacts.

I'm about to turn 50. I became an EMT 2 years ago and a Fire 1 last year. You're no where too old.
Re:Burning Man Death Rates – A Short Lesson in Statistics on Thursday October 01, 2026 @01:42AM (#49918127)
I would guess marathons select for people trying to push themselves hard, in a short period of training time and for a relatively short period of time. I also wouldn't be surprised if marathon attendance skews upper 40s / low 50s, male, and recently got in shape. That's a bit different than sitting in the desert doing drugs. the risk there would be respiratory distress / fent od is my guess.

it's a lot easier to get someone out of an opioid od in the field than it is out of cardiac arrest, or at least the treatment protocol is.

could cities just not have the readers?
I don't really get how you stop that though. How do you even quantify the intelligence of these models? Right now that's mostly by benchmarks. You could just make it fail benchmarks while do well at internal benchmarks.

You could also very likely optimize the current models to be a lot more energy efficient, that'd be a win even if they didn't become more intelligent.

But none of that stops anyone else from researching or improving their models. Or a nation you've told to fuck off from doing so as well.

As has been said in the past, one doesn't put the genie back in the bottle. We only really "stopped" researching nukes because there was diminishing returns. Though one could posit we stopped because simulation became good enough or a myriad of other reasons.

When you're talking about nation state weapons capabilities I don't think you stop, but ai is even easier to share than nukes, it's just a few gigs of numbers versus heavy dangerous materials that are very difficult to source and make. Every gamer, mac owner, etc has the equiv lent of a centrifuge on their desk. Not everyone has a centrifuge on their desk.

the site is missing a ton of webcams, and is not great ergonomics currently.

just off the top of my head:

https://www.summitatsnoqualmie.com/webcams all of these are live most of the time

agreed that "every" is a bold claim. I can find more with a google search.

(edit) the site doesn't even let me suggest more. oh wait it does, it'a an almost invisible link at the bottom.

and man the form is annoying... url, email, catoregy, country, lat, lon... why not just right click place webcam done with it... I know where it is on a map, but this makes me go to google maps, find the lat/lon, copy them out, paste them into this other form....

most structure and wildland fire has moved away from pfas based foams. not everywhere and not for aiports, but most other places.
Re:Where Did All the Public Bathrooms Go? on Monday August 24, 2026 @10:20PM (#49428359)
many of the comments below talk about the death of society, respect, mental illness, etc... but I mean some of this is just high use. most port-a-potties are a shit show (literally). go to a festival, it's people waiting in line and having doing the drunk peepee dance and trying not to explode when they get in there. I can name a few port-a-potties that were nice, there's one in the park by my suburban house. it gets like no use (looking at the chart), it's pretty clean. but also a ton of these things are getting a cleaning every 2 weeks min.

like do you want to pick up that piece of toilet paper you dropped on the ground in that thing with nothing to clean your hands other than sanitizer?

funny enough, I find many public campground vault toilets to be pretty clean, because the camp hosts clean them daily. theworste one I've ever seen is the first bathroom into yosemite from sf. it's not because the homeless are coming from SF to shit there. It's because a) that's the first place you can panic dump, b) there's a line, c) that's where the tourists go. it's also the most graffitied one by far.

if you don't give people a way to clean up easily... then you're dependent on the official service interval. shits gonna happen.

I'm sorry you don't know the difference between training, fine tuning, and context. But definitions matter especially in legalese.
Re:The next chapter of our AI momentum on Sunday August 09, 2026 @12:03PM (#49232637)
lol, nitro is not benign, it's muuuch worse than dynamite which is why they made dynamite. Nitro will go under shock or temperature swings. And it was discovered for it's health effects before they formulated dynamite.
Re:The next chapter of our AI momentum on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @09:57PM (#49191499)
Dynamite is ~20-60% nitro glycerine and the rest "dope" aka a stabilizer which could be sawdust for instance [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamite].

If you have heart issues, you're likely taking nitro daily for chest pain.

So saying it's bad is 40% wrong at least. Makes ya think.

Aah I didn't se that on the video that makes sense..
Re:Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport on Sunday July 26, 2026 @02:38PM (#49060997)
on the other other hand it randomly pressure points the bottom of your car on points that weren't really meant for it.

agree that this would be way better if you just drove up in a queue and cars were taken away. one imagines the slow moving conveyors at amusement parks to get people closer to the ride's speed, tho given how long people take to park, get, take off the seat belt, find park, shut off the car, check their faces in the mirror, Find their cell, button their jacket, straighten up other stuff, find the rest of their shit, get out of the car, kiss their loved ones for 10 straight minutes, struggle with the tailgate, get their bats out, realize they forgot their phone, and finally head away from their car... probbably wouldn't work.

I see people take 5 minutes to get their car moving or get out at a grocery store. what they're doing I'll never guess. Car isn't even started for 3 minutes. When I first learned to drive my dad's hard and fast rule was to get the A/C running before anything else (other than insuring the car wouldn't move), the windows could be lowered with your other hand as a secondary.

One of the teachers I know had to pay for 7 years past their forgiveness date of 10 years teaching because of the student loan shenanagains in the early 202's and then the shutdowns. Luckily finally she got the loan closed ans is still waiting on the 10% back for paying over.
do what reddit did and just fake a ton of content and try and egg the fanbois into a ratings war
Re:Why American ambulance rides are so expensive on Friday July 10, 2026 @02:05AM (#48856296)
Is this the common cost or is this an outlier blog story that hit it off. Talk real data to me. I don't get excited about any individual anecdote (unless it's me personally of course).

No people shouldn't be bankrupted for a short cab ride that's not needed. I'm not arguing that.

Re:Why American ambulance rides are so expensive on Thursday July 09, 2026 @11:56PM (#48855585)
He refused to go in an ambulance the first time. He could have refused the second ride. You can refuse transport or medical care at any time as long as you are able to make rational decisions.

As an EMT if you're A&Ox4, alert to time, place, person and event, you make the choices. You do sign a release so we have proof we didn't abandon you, but you make the choice.

My department, a small rural one with a small tax base which happens to cover a lot of injuries because we have 20 miles of dangerous mountain pass freeway and a ski and mountain bike area, only charge for calls if we transport. I think a transport is around $900. Our minimum transport is 37 miles. We scale it down depending on income and type of event. We're not massive sticklers about it. We're just trying to cover wear and tear on big expensive vehicles for all the non-transports, winter driving, equipment, uniforms, training, etc. Most of our "business" comes from "transients" eg folks who don't live there, eg those skiing, hiking, biking, or driving over the pass.

This is also very much not the norm. But should explain a bit about those who do pay are covering those who don't.

We don't want a chilling effect on calling 911 for precautionary stuff. We'd rather show up 99 times and check people out and let them go than miss the impending cardiac event. And we get those. It's very interesting just how much going over a 4k foot pass stresses people on the edge. Many of our medica calls are people driving to seattle for deeper care and things exacerbating when they get to 4k feet.

talking to several of the catalog unification projects and doing promo reviews for people, it turns out it wasn't as easy to do as people thought. there's places it worked well (media) and others where it's a lot harder.
you go to account -> customer support -> click the order -> chat... or fraud or somthing else

actually... they gave up a while ago and have an amazon store.. it's been a few years IIRC
