pervasive surveillance has a toxic effect on the human mind. it's the same reason mass surveillance by the nsa is disturbing, even if you have "nothing to hide"

fuck you. is this really a meaningful thing for you to do? you really have nothing better to do than trace a username? even if it's all public info you're a piece of shit for tracing it for no reason besides outing because you can. fuck off and die you parasite.

the page specifically mentions that it's ending support in may because ms is dropping xp support, though

stepping away from the context for a moment, the writing is also fucking terrible and overwrought. it reads like a cross between ignatius reilly and sephiroth

it wasn't aimed at you but it's nearly always directly transcribable that way. i have a grudge against the term 'pc' -- i understand that it typically refers to an archetype of a ~hyper-offensible liberal that lives in seattle~ or something but it's nearly always invoked against people who have genuine reason to have grievances with the language and implications used. i won't go into detail because it frankly doesn't matter, but that is the case here with me.

'pc' is invariably shorthand for 'im gonna get self righteous about my right to be an asshole'

depending on what you believed he either ended up there as a result of having his passport revoked en route to ecuador (his story) or that was a ruse and he intended to stay in russia because it was the only state that could and would stand up to US pressure to extradite him (assange's claim); neither of these interpretations lend any credence to the idea that snowden condones the russian regime's policies. he has openly criticized putin's pre-scripted response to his question regarding russian state surveillance.

generating revenue isn't the same thing as providing a valuable service and it's kind of sad that i have to point that out in the first place. there's a reason i've read metafilter every day for over a decade and reddit is generally considered a step above 4chan.

do you really think reddit is a model of what a web community should look like? genuine question, because if that's the case then you're not exactly the intended audience

old and well established user-generated blog with an extremely well moderated (best on the net, imo) discussion forum in the form of comment threads, with a medium-sized user base. the pice tag is only to comment, and as you might imagine it tends to make people value their ability to participate more than on other, free forums. it's the only place on the internet where i genuinely enjoy reading comments.

if you use imdb as a general indicator of a film's quality you're much better off entirely excluding the scores of films produced by india and turkey

racism requires the assumption of a power dynamic that subjugates the recipient. eg a white guy being called a cracker doesn't resonate with the kinds of cultural practices of oppression that that using racial slurs against a minority carries. it's disingenuous and completely misses the point to equate racism with any time the concept of race is brought up

ah yes this emerging threat currently kills fewer people in a single year than an entire genocidal campaign did over the course of six. excellent point, as i'm sure deaths from previously preventable infections are sure to only drop in the future. we wouldn't want to coerce large scale farmers running indisputably torturous husbandry operations into preventing a spike in infant mortality now!
by the way, the phage therapy described in the comment you linked was largely developed by the soviets. lol

the dollar's 'inherent' value is linked to the long term stability of the US regime, which has a lot more utility than dental fillings
