The thing is that sometimes you just need a cheap physical medium you can give away. Sure cloud is an alternative, but it's a bad one, since it costs money to keep online. A CD or a floppy is something you record and forget. And USB sticks are much more expensive and can be a security risk.
Re:DiscImageStudio on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @03:00AM (#50349299)
Absolutely. And discs as well. I had an x-ray recently and asked them to give me the image so I could take it to a different clinic, and they burned it onto a CD. So I suppose optical media is sort of irreplaceable for medical applications at least.
Saying that something is "best" without a proof in an ad is actually illegal in some countries.

It's very unfortunate that there now isn't a single desktop operating system not ruined by touchscreen support.
Re:iPhone Duo Teardown on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:26AM (#50256496)
This reminded me about phones from the TV show Upload. They are wristbands that project a holographic screen. Feels like a cool concept, and just as impossible to build with current tech, heh
Another case of a smart home device that unnecessarily needs someone else's servers. They could've made it controllable over the local network and that would've solved, like, 80% of this issue.

I have a z-wave hub I bought about 8 years ago. Admittedly, it's shit, but it does one thing right — you only need the manufacturer's cloud services if you want to control it from outside of your LAN, or if you want integrations with other services.

CAs themselves already trust DNS to verify your domain.

Audio problems aren't new. I remember that the last 10.9 build I was still using in 2016 had this bug where sound would just stop working every now and then. `sudo pkill coreaudiod` fixed it every time.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:38AM (#50073428)
Except if a device has a microphone and a network interface, it has the technical capability of sharing those recordings. The only realistic way to guarantee this sort of thing is to reverse engineer the entire chain between the two and then never install any software updates.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:34AM (#50073353)
Apple themselves keep assuming that they themselves can be unquestionably trusted. The same company that keeps inventing ever more elaborate ways to forcibly insert itself between users and developers to collect rent even when explicitly required by regulators to open up its devices to allow anyone to freely install anything.
Re:Crypto thieves sell hardware wallets with secret eSIM on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @07:34AM (#50070026)
I had a similar idea to bypass DRM for a while. Some kind of board that goes between the display panel driver and whatever sends it the signal, and outputs something you can capture, e.g. DVI or unencrypted HDMI. Not sure how practical it is.
Re:Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them on Monday October 12, 2026 @05:46PM (#50063490)
Look up how any modern smartphone boots.
Re:Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:13AM (#50056766)
I'd go even further and say that secure boot and hardware roots of trust are the root of all evil.

> The FSA's official explanation for mandating passkey implementation is that people kept falling for phishing attacks, and the attacks were getting too sophisticated thanks to "AI" or something.

Ah, yet another case of people being forced to use technology instead of being left alone doing things the old way where they understood all the risks.

I tried that once and the fit was so tight I thought I'd break both the plug and the outlet.

Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Monday October 05, 2026 @08:03AM (#49963729)
Some people just don't want AI, any AI, at all, can you imagine that?
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Monday October 05, 2026 @08:02AM (#49963721)
This one is easy. Find its updater service plist in ~/Library/LaunchAgents, delete it, and create a directory with the same name so it won't be able to overwrite it.
Firstly, I'm talking about PMs, not group chats. Group chats have different requirements because they have to be moderated.

Of course, I have nothing against being able to delete your own messages for both. A time limit within which you can do that is nice but I can live without one. But Telegram lets you delete every message in any PM conversation, including incoming ones, for both people. Or even the entire conversation, and make it disappear from the other person's list without a trace.

But you can no longer trust Telegram that things you had in your chat will still be there tomorrow. This feature feels like someone has hacked into your device and deleted files they didn't like.
Questionable features like being able to delete anything in the conversation on both sides. Tacky UI choices like liquid glass on Android or the excessive use of Lottie animations every-damn-where. All while being completely deaf to feedback, both from within the team (any criticism makes you "toxic") and from the public. The way he treats his employees isn't exactly good either.
That's not a given. Visionary people sometimes go mildly insane over time. Source: worked at VKontakte and Telegram and watched it slowly happen to Durov.

Re:English: A vs. An on Saturday September 19, 2026 @08:40PM (#49771456)
As a Russian who's fluent in English, I feel like I ended up learning it mostly by example (Slavic languages lack articles, but we have other fun things for people learning them to trip up on, like cases). But a more general rule seems to be that it's "the" if you can point your finger at that particular thing or rephrase it with "that", otherwise it's "a".

Re:macOS 27 Golden Gate: The Ars Technica Review on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:19PM (#49734362)
Android used to work kinda like that. You got the system partition that's a fixed size, and that's it. You also had the data partition for apps and their data on the same internal flash. For everything else, you inserted a micro SD card. You could move some apps to the SD card as well.
Re:Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @01:12PM (#49730010)
You still have to trust the parts you can neither observe nor reverse engineer. So, everything organizational and everything that happens on their infrastructure.
Re:Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:55AM (#49724650)
And why does someone have to trust Apple? Everything "security"-related that comes out of Apple lately somehow always assumes that Apple is to be unquestionably trusted.

And, yeah, I'm incredibly tired of this whole concept of a device you own acting in someone else's interests. This needs to stop and it needs to happen 10 years ago.

Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @12:04PM (#49646032)
Android actually has one real way to build UIs — it's the views and the resource system. Everything else is just Google's abstractions over that, which are either beta or deprecated.

I'm not sure what kinds of tools do you expect. You do have to make layouts for different screen sizes, no real way around that. You'd usually want two breakpoints, so you have phones, small tablets (and foldable inner screens), and large tablets.
