Overview We are looking for a senior systems architect, not a feature developer. This role is for someone who: . has designed systems end-to-end . understands how to structure complex backend systems . can work alongside AI-assisted development (not against it) If your primary strength is writing features or following tickets, this is not the role.
What You Will Be Responsible For Evaluating existing systems and identifying what should be: kept, restructured, rebuilt Designing system architecture across: data flow, service boundaries, processing layers Structuring systems that involve: multiple data inputs (APIs, documents, etc.), document ingestion and parsing, asynchronous/background processing Defining backend patterns for: reliability, scalability, maintainability Working in an environment where AI tools (e.g. Claude, OpenAI Codex) are actively used for execution This is a design-first role, not a ticket-driven role.
How to Apply (Required) Please include: . A brief description of a system you personally designed end-to-end . The hardest architectural decision you made in that system . A short explanation of how you currently use AI tools in your workflow Applications without this information will not be considered.

About the role We're looking for a senior backend engineer to build the core permission rules that decide whether a person/system is allowed to access data. This includes turning access on/off, expirations, and clear deny reasons. Bonus if you can also own database design.
What you'll do • Build and maintain the "is access allowed?" backend logic • Implement expiry and revocation reliably (access can be turned off immediately) • Design for edge cases and prevent bypass/workaround paths • Write automated tests to keep permission behavior correct as the system evolves • (Bonus) Own database structure and scaling for audit/event data
Required (must-have) • Strong backend experience building permissions/access control in production • Can implement time-based access (expires) and revocation reliably • Thinks through edge cases and designs safe defaults (no easy workarounds) • Strong automated testing discipline to prevent regressions
Nice-to-have • Database design experience (schemas, migrations, scaling large log/event tables) • Experience with audit logs that record allow/deny attempts without leaking sensitive data
Compensation Commensurate with experience and scope of responsibility
Company Description At the Data Vault Project, we’re building a secure data vault and permissioned sharing layer designed to put individuals and organizations in control of their information. Through privacy-first architecture and flexible access controls, users choose what data is shared, with whom, and for how long — with the ability to revoke access at any time. Our goal is to create infrastructure that enables secure, transparent, and user-governed data exchange in an increasingly AI-driven world.
About the role We're looking for a Tech Lead / System Architect to own the overall system design for a sensitive-data product. You'll define the blueprint, set technical standards, keep work aligned across components, and guide implementation through reviews.
What you'll do Own the end-to-end system design so components work together safely Define clear interfaces between components and keep them consistent over time Make key technical decisions and document tradeoffs, risks, and scope Guide engineering execution through design/PR reviews (part-time weekly review is OK)
Required (must-have) Led system design for a product handling sensitive data (health/finance/identity) Can define and maintain clear APIs/interfaces across components Can make decisions and document them clearly (what's in/out, risks, tradeoffs) Experience guiding other engineers through reviews and unblocking work
Nice-to-have Experience with audit logging or compliance-style record keeping Experience with permission-based sharing systems
Compensation Commensurate with experience and scope of responsibility
