The open models are not that far behind though. I will spend my last penny on hardware long before I tolerate #1.
I think what it really means is that the public interest means nothing and companies will profit by any means necessary.
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:20PM (#50186130)
Yep, and all these years later, we have lost so much. It may seem like such a small thing, but losing real GMs in WoW makes me really sad.
Re:The compiler was supposed to end programming too on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:13PM (#50186026)
While this may be true Opus 5.5 still sucks at a ton of things that make being a software engineer a software engineer.
Re:CERN and Mistral join forces to accelerate AI for science on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:33PM (#50155319)
Poetic considering the locale. But ya, modern tech is pretty gross, and I yearn for the open models.
The dichotomy of our current age. On one hand, all knowing super thinking machines are just around the corner. Meanwhile, this. Almost seems like a feature and not a bug.
Re:William Gibson and the Trademarking of Cyberspace on Monday October 19, 2026 @10:17AM (#50152816)
Highly recommend the rest of the sprawl books. Honestly, even his more recent works have been bomb. Dude is prescient, to say the very least.
Re:AI is creating a 'human premium' for art created by people on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:55AM (#50130293)
A reply quite some time later, but you are definitely on point, I rescind my previous statement. At least, I do think you are correct about always needing software or having problems to solve in it. Still undecided on the creativity stuff.
The software part is quickly being solved but I honestly believe the more creative aspects will still see large demand. LLMs have a certain stink to their UI, being creative is a hard skill, which AI has yet to master.
Sounds similar to Sam’s problem.
Re:Beam: Reflection's 501B open-weight model on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @08:39PM (#49986338)
Well I cannot argue with that logic!
Re:Beam: Reflection's 501B open-weight model on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @05:23AM (#49976136)
This sentiment was really common circa 2005, or at least general anti-China rhetoric, where I lived in the Tri-state. Funnily enough, I have never felt more a cog, living here in the U.S., than I do right now. Maybe you are right, but my guess is wherever you live, yours is a bit of a glass house as well.
Re:Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking" on Monday October 05, 2026 @09:56PM (#49973259)
I think for autodidacts this will hold true and it will be a boon. For those who want an easy way out though it will almost certainly become a mire. Great points, interested to see how it plays out.
Preach! I am so tired of Anthropic’s safety team being the arbiters of what is right and wrong. If you so much as hint at impropriety you can have future sessions flagged ad infinitum when it comes to specific topics.
It is that they are chatbots. If it were real AI, an actual singularity, I would worry, maybe. But it isn’t. They are absurdly powerful automation tools that can handle logic better than a human can dream of. They take care of the grunt minutiae without complaint. But they are not going to end the world in their current form.
Re:Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance' on Saturday October 03, 2026 @08:24PM (#49949261)
Key word: some. Look at London. We should not be giving up our liberties to corporations that would sell their soul for profit just so we can prevent property crime.
Re:Hole Punch: Sling your spaceship around gravitational fields on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:01PM (#49948220)
I just spent a ton of time on this. Reminds me of the joy from those old flash sites like addictinggames.com. Bravo.
Re:Greg Kroah-Hartman – Security in the LLM Age [video] on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:29PM (#49938820)
It is impressive and wonderfully convenient technology but I struggle imagining Claude ending the world just yet.
Re:The death of web development education on Thursday October 01, 2026 @09:44PM (#49929045)
While this may be true, there are certain types of development (rockets and kernels come to mind) where you will always need highly skilled people willing to be responsible. LLMs excel at many logical tasks but they struggle with creativity and responsibility.

At least, so far.

Yeah! And I honestly feel like I am learning a ton more as I go. I love looking at the traces and it removes that burden of toiling for hours with little gain. I am glad to have known the before-time, but the future is nigh.
Re:SvelteKit 3 Is Here on Thursday October 01, 2026 @09:31PM (#49928980)
For what it is worth, I care, if only for the simple fact that it is an interesting project.
I love Debian for servers still but man Bazzite (atomic Fedora) has been a dream these past years for my gaming PC and laptop. Astoundingly it “just works” in every regard and is rock solid. With the advent of LLMs automating away all the minutiae of caring for a desktop environment I feel like I have died and gone to heaven.
Re:Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:04AM (#49889269)
Very much agree with this sentiment. I imagine a future where tons of small tasks are handled by just-good-enough intelligence. And I can run them on my own hardware.
Re:Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs on Monday September 28, 2026 @08:45PM (#49886529)
It is becoming increasingly hard not to see it as transformative. The man hours needed to do my work has been cut down by orders of magnitude. Wether this transformation is wholly a good thing is to be seen.
Re:Teaching a World Model to Play Pokemon on Friday September 25, 2026 @08:46PM (#49851993)
Small correction but it came out in Japan in 1996.
Re:AI Safety Is Mostly a Sex Cult on Thursday September 24, 2026 @09:48PM (#49839292)
Am I crazy to think all this AI safety stuff is ridiculous marketing and that Roko’s Basilisk is equally dumb?
Re:Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats on Thursday September 24, 2026 @04:11PM (#49836183)
Another reason to switch off a central provider to open models as quickly as possible.
Why did we not get the cool dystopia ala Gibson's Chiba City?
Re:Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after navier-stokes on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @08:22AM (#49725838)
Maybe a specific cancer but in general “solving cancer” is about as scattershot and unspecific as you could be.
I have high hopes for AI yet am hard pressed to envision said abundance trickling down to the common man. The diseases cured will be locked behind a paywall and a renaissance of democracy and freedom is laughable in 2026, let alone beyond.

Dario and his team are on top of the world. He is a good salesman, no doubt. The shareholders will eat well.
