What type of work do you do? I run a small consulting company that builds web apps for biotech, and we’re always looking for help. I suffer from similar problems so I’m sympathetic to the situation you described.

SEEKING FREELANCER | Full-stack software developer | Remote

Guide Informatics is a small (two-person) software consulting company. We work with several biotech companies in the genome-editing (CRISPR/Cas9) space, building software that allows their scientists to organize, analyze, and visualize their data.

We're looking to bring on an additional full-stack developer on a part-time or full-time basis (flexible).

Our stack is Python/JavaScript, and experience with the following technologies would be ideal but not required:

* Django

* Vue.js

* Postgres/MySQL

* AWS

Any experience with the following would be a plus but not necessary:

* Data Visualization tools (D3, charts.js, etc)

* Pandas

* R

This is a remote gig but does require that you be legally allowed to work in the US, and we'd prefer if you were in a time zone close to pacific.

If interested, send a resume and a quick intro about yourself to [email protected].

Interesting! I encountered this same exact scammer recently and as soon as he sent the email with all the pictures I knew it was a scam. I was definitely fooled up to that point as well though...

Guide Informatics | Full-stack software developer | PT/FT | Remote

Guide Informatics is a small (one-man) software consulting company. About 3 years ago I was fortunate enough to start working for a computational biologist who consults for several biotech companies in the genome-editing (CRISPR/Cas9) space. Together we build software that allows their scientists to organize, analyze, and visualize their data.

We're at the point now where we need additional help from a software standpoint, and so we're looking to bring someone on to the team.

Our stack is Python/JavaScript, and experience with the following technologies would be ideal:

* Django

* Vue.js

* Postgres/MySQL

* AWS

Ideally we'd love to find someone that would eventually want to work for us on a full-time basis (we have way more work than we can handle), but to get started we'd prefer a short term contract or part-time W2 employment (specifics TBD based on several factors).

This is a remote gig but does require that you be legally allowed to work in the US, and we'd prefer if you were in a time zone close to pacific.

If interested, send a resume and a quick intro about yourself to [email protected].

Guide Informatics | Full-Stack Software Engineer | Full-Time | REMOTE (US Only)

guideinformatics.com

Guide Informatics is a small, remote-first software consultancy that builds applications primarily for Biotech/Genomics companies. All of our current clients are in the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing space, and our software helps them organize and make sense of their data.

We're looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer with experience building web applications using Python and a modern front-end javascript framework. We use Django and Vue, but for the right candidate specific experience isn't important to us.

This would be a client-facing role with minimal travel requirements (5-10%) and multiple status calls per week with the client(s).

Domain-specific knowledge is not a requirement, but certainly helps. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions and be challenged to understand how the biological entities relate to one another.

Other nice to have skills:

* DevOps (AWS)

* Data Analysis/Visualization

* R

This is a full-time, remote position. If you are a US Resident and can fulfill the client-facing requirements, you can work from wherever you like. Competitive salary with benefits included (Insurance, 401k, PTO, etc).

To apply, please send an introductory email to jordan _at_ guideinformatics dot com.

Re:Anxiety and burnout: why kids are consumed with worry on Thursday January 10, 2019 @03:49PM (#18877987)
I'm considering it. I went to public school my entire life but I've spent the better part of the last decade with self-directed learning (programming).

I think it's that combined with my belief that our current educational model is broken and inefficient (as well as articles like these) that makes me want to explore unschooling more. Thanks for sharing these links.

Re:Hire people who aren’t proven on Thursday September 27, 2018 @11:20AM (#18085319)
The author hits on a lot of great points here, that I believe speak to a larger theme: there's a ton of undervalued programming talent out there and finding that talent can give your company a huge leg-up on the market.
If only the approval process didn't take 250x as long as the actual building of the units...
That's the sad reality of bay area housing in 2018. However, if they keep building enough units like these, prices should eventually become less insane.

SEEKING WORK - Remote, travel ok

Location: US West Coast (SF & San Diego)

Speizer Software is a team of two full-stack software developers who specialize in building Python web applications. We have significant experience with end-to-end development of complex cloud applications including distributed HPC applications.

We currently work in the Biotech field with genomics startups, but we're looking for new projects in other fields as well. Data Science & Machine Learning projects encouraged.

Email: jordan at speizersoftware dot com

Thanks for the data-point. Everyone seems to like the build quality, which is more important to me than ease of use with Linux. I figure I'm going to have to roll up my sleeves to get it working the way I want, anyways.
+1 for a ThinkPad. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 on an x230 that I purchased for $200 and it works great for me for limited dev work.

I'm thinking about purchasing a new one with maxed out specs and it seems like Ubuntu/Debian support is pretty solid on the new models, with some exceptions of course. The p51s looks like a good compromise between power and portability for me.

edit: And the keyboard is amazing! you'll love typing on these things.

Speizer Software | REMOTE | Contract (1099) Part or Full-Time | Compensation: Hourly, Daily, or Weekly rate competitive with market | JavaScript Developer

I'm Jordan, the founder of Speizer Software. We are a small software consulting shop that works primarily in the Biotech field, building web applications for bioinformatics purposes.

We're looking for a developer who is well-versed in the modern front-end landscape and feels comfortable building JavaScript applications from the ground up. We're pretty agnostic on framework but ideally someone with experience using React and Vue would be ideal. Most of what we build uses Python on the back-end so some familiarity with that would be nice, but not crucial.

This is a contract (1099) role and we are a fully distributed team so remote is the only option, really :)

We're open to candidates all over the globe as long as you have strong communication skills in English. Time zone isn't a huge concern.

If it sounds like it could be a good fit, drop me a line at jordan [at] speizersoftware {dot} com. Please make sure to include the following pieces of info:

  - Brief description about yourself and your web development experience (portfolio/github is always nice to see)
  - Hourly/Daily/Weekly rate (or alternative payment structure, if you prefer)
  - Hours per week available
  - Location
Re:My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition on Thursday February 22, 2018 @03:28PM (#16441083)
as someone who has to manage projects for multiple clients, I find docker + docker-compose to be the best solution. The overhead of docker is totally worth it because the container separation makes life so much easier.

all I need to work on a client project is basically:

cd /path/to/project

docker-compose build (just once)

docker-compose up

Re:My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition on Thursday February 22, 2018 @03:26PM (#16441063)
LOL, hits too close to home.
Re:My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition on Thursday February 22, 2018 @03:25PM (#16441060)
yup, same here.
thank you for the specific numbers, I feel like I should memorize them for every time this issue comes up...
Service businesses still get 20% deduction on business income up to a certain income threshold, which is pretty substantial (I think it's just under 400k). Have you talked to your accountant?
Re:Ask HN: Why use Linux for coding? on Thursday February 15, 2018 @02:56PM (#16387013)
It's the best OS for me because I containerize as much as I can (I use a separate docker-compose file for every client, for example). I've tried Docker on Mac, Windows and Linux, and it _just works_ on linux. The others were a major pain.

The added benefit of doing it this way is that I'm not really tied to a machine - all I need to do is clone my repos onto a new machine and I'm basically good to go.

Re:Show HN: Ask a Dev on Tuesday February 06, 2018 @03:23PM (#16319249)
This is fantastic. We need more mentorship in software development.

If there's interest, I'd like to start a north/east bay meetup (maybe Berkeley would be a convenient meeting point?)

Re:Why the IRS Fears Bitcoin on Tuesday January 23, 2018 @01:43PM (#16216124)
Yeah, at best Bitcoin is pseudonymous (through mixing or obfuscating through exchanges). But really, what person committing tax fraud or other underground activity wouldn't just use an actual privacy focused crypto such as Monero (as you said)?

When reading articles like this I substitute "Bitcoin" for "Cryptocurrency" and it makes more sense. The public has just recently normalized Bitcoin and so that's what they write about. Give it a year or so and they'll catch on.

Looks like they can afford at least one FT customer service person now, awesome!
Looks cool - I'd probably use this if I still lived in LA.

Found a typo on your FAQ:

"Our fares our much lower than a private plane service." - that second "our" should be an "are"

I feel like reusable rocket ships are way better than cathedrals
Re:Ask HN: How do I pay taxes on crypto/token trading on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @02:22PM (#16108929)
I use bitcoin.tax and it's made things so much easier. You can import trading history from the major exchanges and for any non-major exchange trading you can import manually or with a CSV.

It's free for up to 100 "events" (trades, mining, gifts, income, etc) and a reasonable $20 per year for anything above that.

I'll be taking the output from that software to give to my accountant and go from there.

Are banks actually using the XRP token, or just a private version of ripple technology? I can't get a clear answer on that.

Also is it possible for me to use ripple to pay for things today?
