OKI, as in ... my old laser printer ?
Exactly. We should have a general kickstarter-like fund for cases like this. Maybe John Oliver is interested :)
Re:Pirate Face Rescues LLM Models from Deletion on Sunday September 20, 2026 @01:52PM (#49778169)
I wish they had used a better name. Why try to make it sound sinister and adjacent to piratebay etc? It's not that these models are illegal to own or download.
I doubt it. Trademark “infringement “ only happens when the two parties compete in the same space. I think if the other party is the music party game, you’re pretty much in the clear. They may still sue you and lose unless you cave.
My most likely doom scenario is that a frontier model convinces the CIC to press the nuclear retaliation button. Maybe this will only kill 90% of humans, but as far as I am concerned, that’s good enough.

The famous salami tactic (Yes, Minister)
These devices should just have an API so that they can be controlled externally, e.g. by a home app. And maybe the EU could force a common API core for devices like this.

e.g., I'd LOVE to have an API to have dryers/ other high current machines refuse to run if the grid is out and the house run on batteries.

Historically, those family fighters had really trouble keeping their families alive and very little to lose.
There is also a completely unreasonable shortage of water for a much bigger city.

People with minor kids and/or dependent spouses/family often disagree.

Ah, so you're one of those hippies hooked on free software too, yeah? What's that your smoking there? Emacs, huh? what's your OS? Linux? I knew it.

Re:The Largest Electric Aircraft Just Flew [video] on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:33PM (#49567660)
I think it's even more than that. The hybrid engine has to run one single RPM to drive a generator, it can be vibration insulated, probably needs to be only smaller because it doesn't have to provide the high max power the conventional motors have etc.

It's why I believe hybrid cars that use a gas motor only to charge the batteries are more reliable and more efficient.

Re:The Largest Electric Aircraft Just Flew [video] on Friday September 04, 2026 @05:37AM (#49562403)
The real benefit really seems to be that the electric motors have a much smaller failure rates than mechanical ones running near their top rpm. The hybrid motor can run at a much optimized RPM, so the idea is that this will improve the overall safety margin of the overall design. I could be wrong, but that's what the video said.
You're right, yet I agree with the website's approach. The goal of this site is to educate users about how people lived, not educate them about stats. IMO. I would have chosen the same algo.

It's clear to me that an even bigger HC crowd would howl "Oh, how boring, look at him choosing pretty much only still alive people" if he had done the 'uniformly random" selection. C'mon!

"random" != "uniformly random", if you want to be pedantic.

Re:Creepy Crawlies on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @02:37PM (#49526106)
Yeah, I meant for kernel.org

It's hugely inconvenient for users not having an account and want to do more than clone an entire repo via an API of course.

Also: right there with: Kill all the poor (Mitchell and Webb): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_4J4uor3JE
It's certainly one way to bring down medic{are, aid} costs.
Re:Creepy Crawlies on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @03:40AM (#49519153)
why not require an account for html access and otherwise just serve say a pre-cached complete repository requiring minimal work?

Until, say, they mutate independently. Now, I have no idea how likely that is, but I think the fear is not baseless. There's a fun SF book, "Directive 51", which explores this a bit. Not a bad book to cuddle up with.
