Recursive self-improvement is just around the corner. Any day now they'll be laying off all their employees as their god-like AI makes investors trillions of dollars. /s
Branching comes from decoherence where quantum entanglements spread to the environment so the coherence of the entangled environment is suppressed and we only observe what looks like a classical world unless we isolate systems to see their coherence. MWI is just saying that entanglement does not stop at measurement, and that decoherence spreads it to the universe.
> If knowing the answer is not valuable then asking the question wasn’t valuable to begin with.
Let's say it's possible to know an alien civilization exists 100 million light years away from their waste heat. But that's all we know and it's unlikely we'll ever interact with them.
Was the question of whether we're alone still "valuable"? Wouldn't a lot of philosophy and even some physics fail to meet your definition of valuable?
MWI just takes the math as saying the entire world is entangled in a massive superposition (the universal wave equation), but decoherence means there are different branches in that superposition that look classical to any observers in those branches, because coherence has been suppressed by all the environmental entaglements.
I don't know what that has to do with religion or nonsense. Everett and physicists, mathematicians and philosophers since then of a like mind thought the math applied to the entire universe, and the was no classical cutoff where the wave function "collapsed" upon a measurement. Everett was providing a deterministic interpretation competing with the Copenhagen one, which he thought was insufficient.
It has mathematical and philosophical content. People can be convinced for reasons other than empirical without it being emotional. Sean Carroll makes logical arguments for why he's convinced MWI is correct.
Decoherence only hides entanglement by having the entire world go into a complex superposition. It's entirely compatible with MWI. Decoherence does not resolve the measurement problem on its own. It's not a separate interpretation. It only provides us a mathematical reason for why the world appears classical.
He and Trump both, so hard to pick who's lying between them.
What would Russia do about it? They're not going to start a nuclear war and can't fight a conventional one against NATO given the stalemate in Ukraine.
This is the place where people would rather see machine capabilities expand rather than humans.
That's quite the leap. Surely there is some ground between free market liberalism and the worst examples of state communism. For that matter, it's unclear why Rand and liberalism are being mixed together, as plenty of liberals don't agree with Rand's philosophy.
You just got to upload your mind to the cloud brah. Then you can live rent free in the tech bros data centers.
Their votes will count the same as yours.
Does it outperform Erlang/OTP?
Which is all that should matter. Nobody should be forced to use LLMs if they can do good work without them.
Opinions vary on OOP being a mistake. Most likely people with that opinion are responding to the influence of Java's popularity in the past. Or the confusion with how Javascript was prototype-based but with Java-like syntax and then it got classes for further sugar coating.
I don't think anyone who regularly uses Ruby or Python thinks OOP is a mistake, it's in how you use it and whether one likes the OOP design of the language.
Why didn't God tell Moses that? For that matter, which God?
I support the idea of inaelable rights, but tying it to divinity is problematic to say the least.
I don't think they had a wealth tax back then, but if that's somethings the voters had wanted their representatives put into law, I don't see why not. And yes I do support it to prevent even great concentrations of wealth across generations.
But what is that have to do with No Kings being a protest against the president acting like a tyrant?
Protests worked in Hungary and Poland to help gain widespread support and eventually vote the authoritarians out of office. You want everyone to know there are many people resisting the leadership abusing power.
No Kings is a catchall for no tyrants or authoritarians. It's what the founding fathers were worried bout when setting up the US representative democracy with checks and balances and a constitution. They didn't want a president to act like a tyrant or a king.
Not everyone thinks we should be free to spread hate. Germany has good historical reasons to ban holocaust denial. Rawanda has good reasons to ban genocidal speech. No more going on the radio to say, "Cut down the tall trees".
The reason to not platform hate speech is the same reason you're not allowed to yell fire in a theater or bomb in an airport without their being one. Or say you're going to kill the president. Even the US has limits on what can be said, including liability laws. You can't just defame your neighbor and not face legal repercussions if they take you to court.
One can imagine this argument during the Salem Witch trials. "She's a witch" wasn't just a joke back then. It could get someone burned at the stake.
Yes but we could have a significantly less one though. We're extremely wasteful and plan ahead poorly for minimizing the environmental impact, which becomes a partisan political issue instead of just doing our best to live in a healthy environment.
When will Elon be held accountable?
Even when one party is in power, there should still be some independence across the branches. But the unitary executive theory combined with Trump's complete takeover of the Republican party fueled by MAGA has almost completely eroded any independence. And when someone like Thomas Massie or Marjorie Taylor Green buck the president, they get primaried, even when it's something Trump ran on and his base supported!
Also when a Supreme Court Justice occasionally decides against the president in favor of the Constitution, they get attacked by the Trump administration and the right-wing media. It's even worse for lower court judges, whose lives get threatened.
One wonders if Theranos had been a software company, would she be lauded instead for her bold moves? Would she be on her fourth company instead of in prison? Or would she need to be male? Just seeing how the AI companies are allowed to behave.
Epstein seems to have gotten away with defrauding a couple billionaires and becoming rich and super connected in the process.
Certain demographics would call your post a rather privileged one.
Neil Asher has a short story set in the Polity Universe where a member of an advanced ancient alien race thought to be extinct is discovered in cryostasis. Upon de-thawing the creature, they discover it's sea dwelling using chemical scent as it's primary sense with no vision or sound, making communication very difficult. But the creature itself is able to manipulate it's environment until it manufactures a human conduit for learning and communication with the human AIs, and finally the humans.
That's not an exhaustive definition, creating also means adding new stuff to the mix often involving leaps of imagination. Or we would have been stuck with the same words, music, tools, programming languages from the beginning. It's hard to see we would have even gotten started without those leaps and new ideas, genres, stories, programming paradigms coming about. Humans have been creating new things from the start.
Starts with a relevant Dune quote, nice to see.
