It is also the number one factor in Covid mortality, once you discount old age which is non-discretionary.
Re:Change.org workers form a union on Thursday July 01, 2021 @02:09PM (#27702358)
they only had 13 employees and now they have something like 500

They are not all engineers. I’ll bet most are account managers looking after big advertising spenders.

Re:Privacy for Students: Surveillance Self-Defense on Sunday June 27, 2021 @04:50PM (#27655197)
The one sort of surveillance schools need is live webcams so parents can monitor lesson content
Re:WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted on Sunday June 27, 2021 @06:48AM (#27650436)
I am sure there are Windows NT machines still in service. I think my Dad has one in his basement. Should Windows forever support NT?

If they were offering an online service, then yes. These devices were compromised by WD’s online file sharing tool.

I would agree if't s a non-EoL products. This, not so much.

A company should not be permitted to just declare something “EoL” if it is still in widespread usage. They made it, they support it as long as any customer still has it.

When I containerized MongoDB, Docker helpfully inserted an allow rule into iptables, opening up MongoDB to the world.

This is crazy. Your network should have been on a private IP address space behind a firewall running static NAT exposing only ports 80 and 443 on a routable IP address. This is network architecture 101.

Re:The inventor of the black box was told to drop the idea on Saturday June 19, 2021 @07:48AM (#27559707)
It is such an obvious development, if not to replace so to complement. But perhaps there are challenges around it that are not obvious?

You might be surprised how scant and expensive bandwidth becomes once you are out of sight of land

AFAIK, the "defund the police" chant was supposed to be in response to American police forces buying army vehicles and gear. That is not a thing in Canada

In the UK they scream “don’t shoot” at unarmed police, whom they call “Feds”. It’s surreal, like they don’t even know what country they’re in.

The reason it cannot be discussed is because the us president decided to politicize the issue front and center. That inevitably forces the heavy hand censorship

Flip that around: hundreds of thousands died because it was more important for the media to attack Trump than to report truthfully. We weren’t even supposed to discuss HCQ for example, because Trump suggested it, despite all the mountains of scientific evidence about its effectiveness.

low-intelligence people

mainly from the college educated

What would you call going $200,000 into debt for a non-STEM degree?

College education is no sign of intelligence, it’s often the opposite.

Re:UK and EU launch antitrust probes into Facebook on Friday June 04, 2021 @12:13PM (#27395124)
Probe, probe, probe, that’s all they ever do. But they know and Facebook knows that no action will ever be taken
That doesn't sound like an unbiased removal of politics from the workplace to me. I think I would be out of the door, too.

Why, do you "assume bad intent" and "make unsubstantiated accusations"? Do you want to, or do you want to work with people that do? I don't think anyone who quits because those "behaviours are not tolerated" will be missed by their former colleagues.

This is the only instance relating to offensive social media I've ever heard of where someone got reassigned and not fired

Yes it's very strange isn't it, I wonder what the reason could be

Re:Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @04:09PM (#27373458)
I always thought Microsoft would be a natural buyer given the tech stack and Microsoft's support for developers.

The heyday of SO is long over and all the serious Q+A takes place on GitHub, which MS already owns.

Re:Making $100k as an Employee versus Being Self-Employed on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @02:05AM (#27365425)
When you are a consultant or contractor, you still have assess to kiss and jerks to take orders from. You actually have to work a lot harder at keeping the folks in charge happy. And worse, they can fire you in two weeks instead of 6 months

You can choose between the illusion of security or the illusion of freedom, that’s the choice

Although not a cyberattack it reminds me of the massive supply disruption and culling that occurred in the UK because of the mad cow disease

Still a form of information warfare attack, perpetuated by none other than Neil Ferguson, operating in plain sight. If he was a hacker he would be in prison but he does incalculable damage again and again and gets away Scot free every time!

remember back in the 90's that there was talk about building out a business focused Internet.

They exist. Radianz, BPIPE and several more.

Maybe 80% of the people that opine on this subject are in category 3)

Category 3 is actually “what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander”

my impression is that those threatened boycotts won't really cause much damage to companies

It still boggles my mind to see multi-billion dollar multinational companies cowering in terror from what is probably no more than a few dozen Twitter users in each case, none of whom were customers anyway, they just have too much time on their hands

Re:Overkill objects for everyday life on Sunday May 30, 2021 @03:41PM (#27336011)
“Military grade” means “made by the lowest bidder” in reality
Re:The media's lab leak fiasco on Friday May 28, 2021 @03:57AM (#27312803)
Reminder that Facebook and Twitter banned users for talking about the lab-leak theory. Youtube accounts also got demontized/banned.

Let's call it for what it is - employees of Facebook and Twitter and Google were complicit in a coverup of malfeasance that cost hundreds of thousands of lives if not more. Named individuals set these policies and put them into action - they need to be exposed and held accountable.

Re:The Spacefaring Paradox on Thursday May 27, 2021 @07:46AM (#27301850)
I would choose to be a colonist in a heartbeat, if the opportunity ever arises. I know full well I'll probably die there or even on the way. Life there is going to be hard work, and the environment will frankly never be as pretty as Earth. I would go fully knowing that I can deal with both isolation and cooperation in groups. That I can deal with sparse resources and the need to improvise daily.

The Slate audience prioritises their own safety and comfort above everything else and is personally offended that any other kind of person exists. They will click and share this ensuring that ad revenue rolls in. That’s all this is.

Assessment can never be done by non-experts. They do not understand the subject matter and cannot even judge which journals are good. It just makes no sense.

The problem with this assertion is: non-experts are paying for all of this.

Imagine you are an ordinary taxpayer. You are feeling the pinch yourself, you look around you and see infrastructure crumbling, every day the press says healthcare and this and that is underfunded. Now along comes some scientist, he or she wants a few billion for a new particle collider that will make no difference whatsoever to your life, and their only justification for it is "well other scientists say we should get all this money, and they're cleverer than you, shut up".

Can you see why funding something with no accountability might be considered problematic?

There's also the fact that an expert who can't explain something to a non-expert probably doesn't understand it very well themselves...

traditional media was so aggressive in shutting it down and "confirming" its falsehood

Agreed, all of them did it for the same reason and mutually reinforced each other, an extraordinary example of groupthink.

I actually give them a bit of a pass here.

Let’s be honest here, they said it was fake for no other reason than Trump said it. There was literally no more thought that went into it than that. And they’ve stopped for the exact same reason, their preferred candidate said it so ergo it must be true.

This is superb! Kudos!
Iran shot a commercial passenger plane down last year, so it isn't exactly outside the realm of possibility.

Don’t forget https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655

I don't know about other languages, but in German "Mongo" is pretty much a forbidden word as it is derogative descriptor for people with down syndrom and other visible defects, especially movement defects.

In the UK that would be "mong", for us Mongo is the planet Ming The Merciless is from.

Re:How Japanese technology shaped dance music on Sunday May 23, 2021 @07:09AM (#27254150)
Same thing in cameras, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony built amazing camera yet the camera software is basically stuck in the 90s

Traditionally in Japan, you would, for example, simply print straight from the camera to the printer. You can see all the support for this if you look in your camera's settings. Putting a PC in the middle is more of a Western style of working. The PC software is bad because the people who write it don't use it themselves and don't really see why anyone would want to, when they could simply skip that step altogether.

Re:Did a weak WiFi password lead police to our door? on Sunday May 23, 2021 @06:03AM (#27253786)
Is UK police so dumb that they suspect people solely based on ipv4?

The police aren't really interested in catching criminals or helping people. There's no promotions in that. Meeting a quota of number of arrests however, you'll be chief inspector in no time!
