They affected search _revenue_, this was the subject of the discussion.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:08PM (#50294264)
I think not but it's irrelevant. Most of the growth is probably from big accounts renting compute/tpu for training models.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:00PM (#50294159)
Yes but it's like the meme: the old is deprecated and the new is not ready yet.

> Their earnings missed by almost 30%, which is pretty huge in the stock market.

It's somewhat fake, as fake as last quarter's huge beat. It's basically due to their large share in SpaceX, which they have to mark to market at the end of the quarter. Anyway, that's not at all the reason for the freakout.

Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:49PM (#50294009)
Don't take it at face value. There is a serious rebuttal but I cannot find it now (post is from previous quarter). Anyway, he's twisting facts to fit the narrative.

> Is the current quarter anomalous,

Yes, to an extent. There were three unfavorable circumstances other than AI eating into search: FX (major), the World Cup timing, end of de minimis exemption in EU.

A lot of people do though by looking at the current stock price.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:24AM (#50287825)
When the updates are boring people complain that they don't change anything. When they take risks (touchscreen on laptop, foldable phone) people complain about the new stuff.

I like that they do this. If it doesn't catch on, they will change back, like with the touch bar.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:22PM (#50263527)
Thanks. So the GPU is worse! And the memory bandwidth is smaller.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:13PM (#50261423)
Ah good point. Is there somewhere a comparison between M6 and M1 Pro?
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:19AM (#50259809)
Mine has a broken fan so I have to run it in slow mode and it's still working fine.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:27AM (#50258941)
And it's still $1999. That's impressive. I paid the same for the M1 Pro in 2021.
> Mines and oil and gas wells are huge wealth concentrators.

Only if the oil price remains high. If the world, um, situation stabilizes we will go back to having a glut of oil and hence low prices. Lower than ever I would guess because of the current massive transition to EVs.

Asphalt shingles. As usual the US is building cheap and light and these things don't last.
Same in France. You also sign that whatever excess you're producing goes to the grid for free.
We're getting further from the subject, but who cares.

I keep explaining to boomer members of my family that things were not good during the communists. It just seems bad now because of the news and social media. They are better off than 90% of the people in their country, but they don't perceive it.

Anyway, I think people who have been "civilized" for a long time would also take a long time to turn uncivilized. Which might mean never, since they would also do their best (as a tribe) to get out of poverty quickly.

I don't think it's that clearcut. There's a cultural DNA. Folks behave a certain way then when they grow up their children behave the same because that's how they saw at home. Principles and basic morals are not enforced at home etc.

I'm basically arguing that nature is less important than nurture, even if nature might indeed be worse than we think.

Google has an army of salespeople.
Re:Network incident disrupts mobile services across France on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:26AM (#50182628)
Incident is an understatement. I haven't had mobile data for at least 5 hours. And Orange is supposed to be the better provider.
Re:Voxtral 3 on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @03:44PM (#50171645)
The healthcare is quite good and cheap but you have to be in the system. This means you have to have a family doctor and to have already seen the main specialists that you need. Then you can get an appt within days (usually by calling the secretary directly rather than on doctolib).

But yeah dermatology is in particularly high demand for some reason.

I would argue it will be 10x in 2-3 years the way things are going.

Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:53AM (#50101417)
Yes you get a 3rd, 4th, 5th opinion! Until you understand what the consensus seems to be. This is serious stuff.

Do you get any discounts on parking?

The Ami is very popular around here. Lots of high-schoolers driving them since they can do it without a (proper) permit.

Re:Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D Scan Verdict on Sunday October 04, 2026 @08:27AM (#49953326)
It sounds like that's besides the point. High res scans already exist. They just wanted to make a point it seems.

Is he running for office in November?

Had to read it twice lol. The syllable that is stressed makes a huge difference in some words.
