Re:Is "colorectal cancer" rising in "young people"? on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @05:53PM (#48286523)
This.

In my 40s I asked my doc what I should get screened for and when. He said to wait until 50. Now I wait here on death row with stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Re:Gimp Source Code on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @12:04PM (#46366950)
Somebody posted 'Adobe Photoshop 1.0 Source Code (1990)' recently so I think this post is some kind of smartass response to that.
DAE remember in 2010 when Steve Jobs said that Facetime would be an open industry standard?
Re:Ultima VII Revisited on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @11:21AM (#45981419)
I recall that it was possible to squeeze a disk cache in too, which made a nice difference for performance.
Re:Ultima VII Revisited on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @11:19AM (#45981391)
A YT'er named 'Spoony' also made a thorough, entertaining retrospective of the Ultimas, and even caps it off with an interview with Lord British!
Re:Ultima VII Revisited on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @11:16AM (#45981370)
I loved U7 and 7.5, but those were the last ones I played because the series somewhat went off the rails after that. Pity.
Smart businessman, but not the best reputation as a boss or for creating a pleasant work environment, even by the standards of the day.
Re:.NET 10 on Thursday November 13, 2025 @02:15PM (#45919233)
Yeah I've been using non-.Net languages this week, and lamenting how much they suck in regards to smooth version management
Re:Microsoft confirms Windows 11 is about to change on Thursday November 13, 2025 @01:50PM (#45918872)
I'm thinking that Valve's new SteamBox will help this tremendously.
Re:FBI tries to unmask owner of archive.is on Thursday November 06, 2025 @02:27PM (#45839219)
Exactly. Now that the facade of being a country with integrity and equality is thoroughly shattered, good luck getting public support for shutting down a website that lets people read news for free. Shit's on fire yo; we got bigger problems than that.
Re:I have released a 69.0MB version of Windows 7 x86 on Friday October 31, 2025 @12:47PM (#45774061)
It becomes The Windows of Theseus.
Yes like the Ottawa Treaty banning Land Mines, in which 166 inconsiderate countries failed to consider the needs of big-time land-mine manufacturers like the US.

Re:A brief history of random numbers on Tuesday October 28, 2025 @04:59PM (#45739100)
From the title, I expected to see a list of recently-generated random numbers.

I got a 27 yesterday.

Re:Dropping Trust in US Media on Thursday October 02, 2025 @02:57PM (#45453858)
Is anybody who identifies strongly with a political party is interested in hearing fair or balanced news? I had presumed that they just want to hear confirmation, and are likely to stray far beyond their favorite echo chambers.
Re: on Thursday October 02, 2025 @02:38PM (#45453608)
"Israel accused the IPC of lowering the second threshold of acutely malnourished children for a famine declaration, which the IPC has denied."

Damn, Israel is really arguing about how much child starvation they are allowed to inflict before it becomes egregious?

That might be another one of those "are we the baddies?" moments right there.

Re:Elon Musk and the right's war on Wikipedia on Thursday October 02, 2025 @01:25PM (#45452677)
Yeah, I do see where you're coming from. But just like with traditional media, Wikipedia as a "knowledge commons" maybe requires a slight left bias to guard against entrenched power and to raise awareness of marginalized perspectives.

As long as that's done in a way that protects knowledge integrity and relies on reliable sources and ethical review, I think I'm okay with that.

Also keep in mind that the age range of Wikipedia contributors skews much younger than the US population so yeah for boomers and the boomer-minded it's often gonna seem too progressive.

Re:Show HN: The Unite Real Time Operating System on Thursday October 02, 2025 @12:08PM (#45451562)
Back when I did embedded development full-time I always lusted after QNX, but the costs and royalties were higher than what our low-volume product could justify. Or maybe we were just cheapskates.
Re:Windows 10 refuses to go gentle into that good night on Thursday October 02, 2025 @10:32AM (#45450144)
As a PC enthusiast, I can't remember a time when PC upgrades were less necessary than nowadays.

For the average user and even semi-enthusiast, 5+yo hardware with Win10 works just fine. I just upgraded last year, but it was probably the longest stretch I've gone between new PC's and even then it was as much FOMO as it was necessity.

I've been buying/using/loving Nova for years. Gonna be tough to ditch it.
Re:Intel 80286 emulator for Raspberry Pico on Tuesday August 19, 2025 @04:05PM (#44955724)
The page calls 320×200×256 "Mode X" but IIRC that was actually 320×240×256 wasn't it?
I pretty much assume that all product review sites are at worst crooked and at best biased.

Is there a "meta review" site like metacritic, but for products?

Re:Thingino: Open-Source Firmware for IP Cameras on Tuesday August 05, 2025 @03:31PM (#44803109)
Cool! I hope this supports my Yi cameras someday. They added advertising to their app so now every time I gotta check my cams I first need to dismiss ads. That's a fabulous way to piss off customers.
Re:Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience on Tuesday July 22, 2025 @06:59PM (#44653993)
lol i converted from CAD to USD, so the extra $5K is just the being in canada tax i guess.
Re:Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience on Tuesday July 22, 2025 @06:29PM (#44653736)
If you're selling cars at that price tier ($150K CAD / $110K USD), you'd better be backing it with top-tier service.
Re:Show HN: I built a tool to solve window management on Wednesday July 09, 2025 @01:49PM (#44512916)
Ditto. Having different desktops for different tasks/problems reduced clutter and makes context switching so much easier.
It is definitely part of TikTok's mission to sow dissent in free western countries. And considering that the majority of people in those countries have lousy critical thinking skills, they'll readily believe stuff like this.

That's why TikTok should be banned outright.

I work in the robotics industry and expect zero disruption from this.

It looks like a cute fun little toy though!

Ditto. Chemo sucks but for me it is not terrible.
