It could be used for good in a possible future to track down all the former Flock/Palantir/Anthropic/OpenAI employees when it's time for the trials.
Interestingly "Police love them, citizens don't" also applies to police themselves

I don't think those systems can/should be updated using apt though.

You're right, they're probably not critical enough.
And from what I can see those courts have shown to be pretty ineffective against crimes like sexual assault.
I don't believe anyone wants to create a new legal system, but the reality is the vast majority of sexual assault cases aren't resolved in court due to existing social issues. These "judges, jurries and prosecutors" are just people who don't want to associate with potentially dangerous people regardless of the legal outcome. Beyond legal consequences to crime there have always been social consequences too - I think the major difference compared to the past is that these companies put out press releases instead of just blacklisting someone and moving on.
Many states aren't outright banning it, but making filming from "too close" a form of interference.
Law enforcement agencies in the US are infamous for stealing billions of dollars of cash from innocent people using civil asset forfeiture.

The thing is you’ve also been quite aggressive toward other people on twitter. Making yourself out to be a victim is definitely en vogue.
And in the years since we have killed millions of people in Vietnam and hundreds of thousands in the Middle East and we’re currently bankrolling what many people consider to be a genocide in Palestine.

There have been several successful actions, but we’re talking about the net impact not specific instances.

Military violence can make the world more unstable too. Especially when many civilians are killed. There is no way to actually determine if military action taken by the US has been a net positive for the world.

The docs.rs part is actually included in the new website: https://ocaml.org/packages

I've been using ocaml-lsp-server with nvim-lspconfig and it's been great, I'm wondering what issues you've had? From my perspective the ecosystem is evolving pretty quickly!

But if you truly find it boring it’s still going to be difficult to frame it that way. Picking up too much work you don’t want to do can make you resent a job very quickly.

I am curious if individuals do actually have more freedom now than before.
Re:Train burglaries in LA on Friday January 14, 2022 @10:05PM (#29943155)
Again, never said it was right, just that theft is deeply embedded in many facets of American society.
Re:Train burglaries in LA on Friday January 14, 2022 @09:47AM (#29935070)
I’m not trying to justify any of it, just pointing out that theft is a completely accepted part of culture in the US. Don’t get me started on civil forfeiture…
Re:Train burglaries in LA on Friday January 14, 2022 @09:11AM (#29934569)
This is visually shocking, but the sheer amount of money taken from workers by wage theft eclipses this issue completely. Theft is normalized at all levels of American society.
Re:Music industry is suing youtube-dl hosters on Thursday January 13, 2022 @05:56PM (#29928196)
Except the RIAA isn’t a starving artist and the actual artists make practically nothing from streaming services - the starving artist’s needs are already compromised by large corporate interests.
That is a very anti-human understanding of how an employee should be treated.

If that’s the case this person should never answer an email outside of working hours without getting paid for it. Any time they spend thinking about work outside of working hours should be compensated as well. If there is a work emergency she should not get involved unless they will get overtime.

Wage theft is one of the most prevalent forms of theft in the United States. Employers are literally underpaying workers for the amount of time they spend working, which to me seems even more lazy, dishonest and delusional than taking a 30 minute break.

As long as the work is getting done there is no problem with breaks.

I tend to think what you’re reacting to is just history moving forward. Unfortunately not everyone will be remembered forever.
Re:The City of Palliative Care on Friday December 03, 2021 @10:13PM (#29438341)
70k per year is less than we spend keeping someone in prison, which is where many people believe we should put drug addicts. The truth is it’s not about the money, people just don’t want to see other people suffering where they live.

As a society, even spending all this money, we are failing to help some of our most vulnerable citizens. It’s quite telling that conversations about social safety nets always become about money rather than reducing harm effectively.

Yes things like Windows, Racket, Amazon, Tesla, Apple, Android… these are already words that existed however there is clearly room to share meaning based on context. When you’re taking about lisp and you mention “chicken” it’s clear you’re not talking about the animal.

I am honestly surprised how many people in HN comments have this same complaint over and over again. Not everything needs to be directly searchable by name only.

Re:End Amazon’s Surveillance Partnership with Police on Wednesday October 27, 2021 @10:03PM (#29021490)
> For those of you who down vote this post, I'm guessing you support criminals?

In many cases police are also criminals and because of their job they are above the law, which to me is much scarier than other criminals out there.

A vasectomy does not inhibit testosterone production and the hormones in existing birth control have been shown to cause blood clots, migraines and other serious issues for women taking them.

Condoms require proper use every time and are not as effective as other methods.

There are also ongoing investigations into gangs within the LA Sheriff department and a fraud lawsuit coming from the City of Compton against the sheriffs. LASD might be one of the most corrupt police departments in the country.

Other than immutability by default and pattern matching I don’t see the Rust connection.

Out of curiosity, what is OCaml’s baggage that you’re thinking of?

Re:Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US? on Tuesday September 14, 2021 @08:25PM (#28533452)
Out of curiosity, what is your long term plan?

From my perspective people who aren’t concerned about contracting and spreading covid are the short term thinkers - they just want to have things back to how they used to be right now without any thought about mitigating the threat.

Re:Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines on Wednesday July 28, 2021 @01:54PM (#27986999)
Vaccine records are nothing new - I remember needing to get a meningitis vaccine to go to college 15 years ago.
Not everyone wants to go space, there is something nice about enjoying the stars from your own backyard or on a camping trip. I think this comes close to space pollution if they aren’t able to provide a tangible benefit to people on earth.
Re:A shift in American family values is fueling estrangement on Wednesday July 14, 2021 @04:26PM (#27837980)
Continuing to let someone degrade you because “they’re doing the best they can do” is equally cruel. All relationships take work, if one party isn’t willing to work on it then thats not a relationship worth putting energy into.
